He's an NBA analyst for espn if you actually did not know.Who the is Bomani Jones? Can anyone get radio time nowadays?
He called Syracuse press the worst ever last night, and that it was all on Virginia.
It's always a good press when you've got white Mutombo back there.I wouldn't say it was the worst ever (did he watch Iowa State against Virginia earlier?), but I do agree with the general idea that the press was not very good. I can't believe how badly they were blowing 2 on 1 and 3 on 1 opportunities, and I breathed a sigh of relief when Boeheim called off the press because I was pretty certain they were going to start torching us if we stayed in it.
I'm not complaining or anything, and the press was legitimately good against Gonzaga and it miraculously worked against Virginia, but I'd say Virginia's struggles with the press was 90% on them for blowing simple basketball plays.
Prior to SU putting on the press they were literally rolling the ball up to mid court and walking into their offensive end of the court.Well, they didn't have many problems breaking it in terms of crossing half court without a turnover. But they had tons of problems converting 2 on 1s and 3 on 1s.
But basketball fans know that getting steals is not the only purpose of a press. It's also to speed the game up and make the opponent play faster than they are comfortable. That's what happened.
Im amazed at the widespread lack of hoops knowledge these days. Most people don't really know what they're watching and what they're talking about...but pretty much everyone wants to give their thoughts and opinions. Leads to a lot of dumb stuff being out there.
Why do people with should know basketball not comprehend that getting a steal in the backcourt is only one positive outcome that comes from a press? Burned timeouts, bad shots, turnovers in the frontcourt, blocked shots, offensive fouls are others. It's not that hard to understand. He called Syracuse press the worst ever last night, and that it was all on Virginia.

Oh, and by the way, we made 2 steals and layups in the Gonzaga game. Kinda helped eke out that win.

I counted 3 turnovers from the press against UVA. But, the bigger contribution of the press was dictating the tempo. Why do people with should know basketball not comprehend that getting a steal in the backcourt is only one positive outcome that comes from a press? I sort of see what his argument is. Typically, a successful press means you're getting steals (usually in the backcourt), or you are forcing the other team to use timeouts w/ corner traps. Aside from that 1 Malachi steal (huge play, obviously), we didn't do much of that.
But here's what Bomani is missing: UVA doesn't like to be sped up. They are a methodical offense that relies on cutting + precision ball movement. They aren't a team that wants to run. So what the press DID accomplish was it forced UVA to take much quicker shots without being able to get into their normal offensive sets. They looked terrible against it because it's just not their style.
The press worked. Just not in the way a press normally does.

That would be chuckalicous.Agreed. But the press did something even more important. It helped our offense. The car speed analogy (whoever said it) is a good one. UVa wants to play at 55, we want to play at 70, and UNC wants to play at 85-90. The press helped get us to 70 mph and we were unbelievable on offense as a result.
Here's hoping we get the 70 mph game (our comfort zone) against the Tar Heels.
Cheers,
Neil
