After today

And yet some people wonder why the defense gets tired ...

You need sustained drives, even with a hurry up offense.
I will take 4 play drives for scores all day long. Let them try to sustain drives and keep up. The pressure is on them to keep up by running the ball, which also shortens the game BTW. So run the ball when you are behind to catch up, not a good strategy for team that is behind.

That is the whole point of this type of offense.

Not to mention we played two pretty good teams on the road to open the season. North Carolina is going to be damn good when we look back after the season, and Pitt just showed how good they are this week.

In covid times, there aren't truly any road games. Please, let's take baby steps instead of looking at the schedule and sizing up future opponents. We were outplayed in many facets of the game. Let's keep getting better week to week bc we won't be given 5 to's every week.

Tech seemed to have some Big Boy school transfers on the OL. I thought they were pretty physically dominant on the ground. Tackling has been dreadful for the most part across the country.

In a hurry-up offense (yeah, I know SU isn’t hurrying much right now), the defense is going to be on the field more minutes every game.

So wouldn’t you want quicker, lighter, more athletic players on defense, as opposed to heavyweights who are going to get exhausted quickly?

I’m not excusing tackling errors. I’m just wondering if SU’s defensive unit is probably going to be lighter every season.

Well, they used TEs *twice* in the whole game (once for a 1 yard gain) and that is so rare that it's worth a comment from SWC in his write up. So, I think they still have quite a ways to go.

Tommy hitting a couple long bombs and a bushel of turnovers from the defense made up for the inability of the offense to string together complete drives.

Thank goodness for Tucker's emergence. Still, we had only 14 first downs. The other team ran 20 more plays than us. Not really the things to build on for the future.
Attaboy.

Why do you assume the TOs were "given" and not taken?

I agree. I know there is excitement after a win but the O was still problematic. I really like Tucker and the OL played better but some of the calls and TD decision making needs to improve. One example was team comes out of a time out. Everyone should be on the same page. It was third and short. TD throws deep and there was not a receiver within 30 yards of the throw. Still could not get on the same page after a time out.
There were multiple third downs and five or less where it was thrown deep or thrown away. If we cannot consistently move the ball and have to rely on long touch down passes and multiple take aways on D it’s going to be a long season.
Here’s hoping things get corrected in the bye week. Even with the offensive issues good to have a win.
Spot on, everyone gets caught up in the excitement of a win, we won the TO battle 5-1 and without the pick 6 we win the game by 10, now we could've scored if we had a drive from the GT 40, but the offense still wasn't anything close to good, a lot of breaks went our way, we could easily lose to liberty by 20 with a few bad breaks, maybe I'm a pessimist but I'm not drinking the cool aid quite yet, I thought this was a winnable game after watching GT's first two games and if it looked like a lot of our previous games we would be in big trouble as a program. Could we win a few ACC games sure, can we also get beat by liberty at home, very possible.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Remember Georgia tech was projected to be in the last place in the ACC. They are not good. They beat Florida State who is simply atrocious. Yes TD made a few nice passes but still has a long long way to go. He continues to look uncomfortable when his first receiver is unavailable then make rushed and bad decisions, throwing the ball away unnecessarily and still not seeing the field appropriately. And still unbelievable that he could not get that one extra yard on the long run. That is an excusable. Keep in mind he only got sacked oncee so it is not like he was under unbelievable pressure all day. Tucker looked very good. Happy to see a running back finally able to see the hole. The 335 defense definitely won the game
. Without those turnovers the game would have been much closer. The truth of the matter is when you get that many turnovers they should have had this game iced and up by 35 points by mid 3rd quarter - But somehow almost let GT back in the game. This season is going to be a long haul. I don't think anything will be easy. Lastly very impressed with our many young DB's /LBs. Hope Cisco is ok and ready in 2 weeks.,
THANK YOU!! Its hard but I've stumbled upon a few reasonable fans, we are all happy we won but a lot of the problems are still glaring, before the game I said we should win and if we don't at least compete and look decent the program is in terrible state. GT is in year 2 with no offense of an entire tear down and a freshman QB, recruiting all different players. We are in year 5 this shouldn't some crazy thing we looked sloppy at times and tried our hardest to let GT back in the game. The defense has been a bright spot but their will be some tough games especially when the offense put them in terrible spots, I'd just like to see us compete and get better and build because this program up, season will be a long one. Imagine this board is liberty comes in a beats us at home which is very possible.

Fair question, but in watching the game, they were careless frosh mistakes, one for sure was generated by pressure. Most turnovers are unforced errors. Something you cant count on. We showed some life on O, but we still were outgained by almost 100 yards, gave up 275 on the ground, gt had 2x more first downs, and they had an unheard of 15 penalties.

I disagree. I'm pretty sure I saw at least 3 picks that were forced. And even those that don't appear forced are often caused by something the defense did, either during the play or before.

Good points. From my seat, GT stayed in this game by gashing us on the ground (275 yards). Not only were their OL guys big, they could move ... regularly pulling, tying up our DL or making holes. Our DE's and LB's were able to get pressure on passing downs, but on runs our DE's lost contain and the DL got man-handled multiple times. GT runners often got to the LOS without even being touched, and when they reached the second level we had trouble bringing them down. Our individual tackling stats are illustrative: of the 10 top SU tacklers, only one was a DL (and he was 8th). The two top tacklers were safeties. That is a problem I'm not sure we have an answer to (this year at least). Hopefully we can get quick leads to force teams to throw it - which plays to our strength.

I bet if you won the lottery you would focus on the taxes you owe.
