6'6 275 pounds. He is like the poster child of no pun intended , the biggest change in the game of football in my lifetime.

For instance John Kolb of the Pittsburg steelers play in the 70's was 6'2 260lbs and played tackle. In the late 70's he finished 4th two years in a row for the world strongest man competition.

John hannah whose nickname was the hog and who is genuinely considered the best interior lineman in NFL history and played until the mid 80's was 6'2 265 lbs, someone once said when he turned the corner on a sweep he looked like two guys wrestling around in a burlap bag.

Now we have some qb's as almost as big as the latter two players.

The game has changed so much that a huge mountain of a man weighing almost 275 lbs and standing 6'6" tall is getting blown up so bad its making the whole offense almost come to a standstill at times. The game has changed so much it has passed by this huge man.

consider this Jim Ringo played center granted back in the 50's and 60's. He is an NFL hall of famer and no doubt the best OL ever in school history. he was 6'1 and 230 lbs.

My Grandfather played in the late 30's at Syracuse. He was 6'1 200 lbs and started at QB and defensive tackle. That's roughly the size of our starting CB's now. Crazy to think about. Oh yeah, his helmet was a leather cap also.

Herb Stecker was a very good defensive end for us in the late 60's at 6-2 190. Maybe we should go back to one platoon football. Those 300 pounders would become 250 pounders or collapse in exhaustion.

I remember going to the Sugar Bowl and the Alabama guy on my ship saying SU couldn’t beat Auburn because their line was 2 small. They weren’t and I’m not sure what my point is, but this reminded me of that, lol.

The major point here is that he was 290-295 LAST YEAR! Why did he lose this weight? Has anybody had the brilliance to ask him or Cavanaugh what the thinking was behind this tactical move?

Babers likes his offensive linemen lighter because they have an easier time with the number of plays they want to run.

Go look at Georgia’s OL. They make Servais look like a hill. One you could ride your bike up easily.

Georgia's Oline looks like ours. 6'3 280 - 6'7 335.

6'3 280 is a different build than 6'6 275

Edit Roster says 273, and they lose weight during the season, he could be down to 265 at this point.

For the next four games, he needs to block like a mountain of a man. He has spent way too much time this year getting pushed three to five yards back into the backfield. Go back and re watch the games. DeVito has to side step Servais getting pushed back into him. I like Servais but he has not had a good year and I think some of it has to do with his weight loss.

and Black is the "smallest" interior DL in the ACC

I think that the lack of size, almost across the board, is a factor in general.

Indeed. According to articles, he puts weight on during the season. I'd guess he's about 285? I don't mind that for the edge. Inside, I prefer 300 and up, especially for guys with length. Really wish we could have seen him at T, this year. He set himself up to beat the edge rush. Really hoping that happens, next year.

Black has been very respectable this year, imo. I'll take 285 with six pack, over a 310 chubby.

From the Dino Babers Show before Maryland:

“Coach I saw a report on TV that Georgia is very proud of their starting interior offensive line which averages 328 pounds per man. Our starters average 304. The famous “Sizable Seven” line of our 1959 national champions average 215 pounds per man. Our 1987 undefeated team had a line that averaged 275, which seemed impressive at the time. Where is this trend going? Where were all the 300 pounders in the old days? Is it a healthy thing to have this many players who are carrying this much weight?”

I called in my second question about the weights of linemen. Dino said that he “had to go to a grocery store” to answer that one. When he was a kid you couldn’t buy a chicken breast, a leg, and wing like now. You had to buy a whole chicken and cut it up. Today my wife cooks chicken and she gives me a breast and I tell her that I can’t eat a whole bird. I just want half a breast. She says that is half a breast. They make bigger chickens these days. They kill the insects so they can’t eat all the grain and there’s more meat to eat.”

As to whether it’s bad to have players carrying all this weight, it depends on what that weight is made of and how it’s distributed. He said that Georgia wants a power running attack so they want all those big guys clearing the way. At Syracuse it’s all about tempo. Some players think they need to be big but they usually lose weight in SU’s work-outs. Evan Adams can get by being 352 because he’s a freak of nature. Most of our guys can get away with a speedo. If we brought them in you’d think they were 260-270 pounds. Muscle weighs more than fat.

Players are too big and too fast.

The game is not sustainable with the collisions between such men.

at some point they will cap the weight like the do in pee-wee football.. would it really hurt the game if no one was more than 225? guys wouldnt be able to bulk up or be as strong but it would help in many other ways,.

Imagine the lawsuits though...but I like the idea. Maybe cap it at more like 250

It's a good idea.

And I bet most players would have no problem with it.

I am familiar with a number of players who were once 300+ pounds but now weigh in the low 200s e.g. Dave Wohlabaugh.
