AJ Long medically disqualified due to multiple concussions..transferring

I really hope this kid gets throw with no more head injuries, not something to be messing around with. Best of luck AJ, thanks for everything!

I honestly question a coach who would be completely willing to take on a kid who has already been medically disqualified for concussions. Obviously, maybe a second opinion from different doctors will reveal something else...but that's a very dicey situation for sure, if he actually wants to go somewhere and try to play.

No idea if that's what's going on here, of course. Only time will tell.
Didn't Shafer do the same thing with Arciniega?

Shafer did the same thing with Arciniega.
"He spent three semesters there, but was only on scholarship for the first year as a disagreement with the coaching staff regarding his concussion history left him on the sideline for each game that first year." From the article on syracuse.com about Luke getting his 2 years. Maybe our medical staff read over the test and didn't think it warranted him not playing anymore? We won't know for sure, concussion are a horrible and traumatic event in ones life. I hope our medical staff takes them as serious as I believe they do.

Didn't Shafer do the same thing with Arciniega?
IMPOSSIBLE

But, yeah. I think so. This is one of those things though where we excuse it when our own guy does it, you know?

Does Shafer make that call? I have to think the medical staff could overrule him at any time, right? If the doctors say a player can go, I would expect the coach to say, "OK". Am I missing something?

I have no idea how that works.

It just seems odd that we would not let a player play anymore due to concussions, but would take a player that someone else wouldn't let play anymore due to concussions.

I don't know for sure, either. But I have to think, what with concussions being the front-page issue they are (and rightfully so), the medical staff has the final say. Maybe they gave Luke the medical thumbs up. :noidea:

It's different when it's your doctors and you're sure their were concussions.

I don't get how/why he would be allowed to play somewhere else. Another school would be crazy to approve a player who has a history of concussions. Is there any liability to the new school if a kid gets permanent brain damage who already had a history of concussions and was DQ'd at a previous school?

It just seems too risky to me and yes I could see how an FCS school would see the upside in getting a D1 QB but damn the risk is high. Someone needs to protect these players from themselves.

Total he said, she said situation with Luke A. at Nevada. They DQ'ed him over supposed concussions he suffered in high school and he denied that situation.

Played a year at JUCO with no issues and he's been here for now his third season and we haven't heard anything about him having concussion issues.

No. Adkins offered Arciniega after he left Nevada and was playing Juco.
But Shafer, as defensive coordinator and now head coach, allowed him to play. I don't think Adkins has finally say there.

He had 1 documented concussion at Nevada. He was DQ'ed over supposed concussions he had at the high school level which both he and his HS coach deny.

Different situation than AJ, AJ has multiple documented concussions while at Syracuse.

As I said above, I think the medical staff cleared him to play. They have to clear every player, don't they?

This is what I was replying to. IMO, the HC chooses to play someone, the medical staff allows someone to play. Maybe semantics, but if the medical staff cleared him, I'm not sure how this is on Shafer.

Unless I am totally missing your point. Which is certainly possible. :)

I did. Not the same situation. AJ was DQ'ed for concussions suffered on campus, first hand. Luke A. was DQ'ed for a supposed high school concussion history.

And then cleared by our medical staff. This talk of Shafer being at fault here is nuts.

Yes but Marrone was still the HC when Luke committed and probably signed as he was a JUCO. So do you think he would have recruited and signed him if he wasn't medically cleared to play?

He wasn't just cleared by our medical staff, he was cleared by Sierra JC's staff and cleared by a handful of other schools that offered him scholarships out of JUCO.

Exactly. Totally agree. I was just pointing out that there is no way this is on Shafer.

Good luck to AJ! Transfer to FCS where the hits won't be quite as big, play immediately, and have some fun!
