AJ Long medically disqualified due to multiple concussions..transferring

Well said. I hope this provides a moment of clarity for the many folks on this board who felt Dungey had "only" a concussion and wanted him to be on the field against LSU. We're moving past the neanderthal days of meathead football dealing with concussions.
I wonder if all are, and specifically our conference mates.

"I'm OK," Long told . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "I've had six days to prepare for this and my family has made this decision a lot easier on me with their love and support. My next plan is to get into coaching, and eventually take Syracuse to what I said I would."

Gotta love this kid - I know I do!!

Time for a card Crusty!

I thought he was wobbly in at least one game, I want to say the Florida State game. I'd suspect these happened in games over practice. Christ the kid was sacked 8 times in the NC State game.

I personally think he would've been great in Lesters' offense. Hope he's ok, sticks with it and gets his degree. Big fan of this kid and his enthusiasm for Syracuse - wish it would rub off on some folks around here.

While I wish you were right...I'm not sure. I mean look what happened to Bernard Pierce this weekend.

If he was concussed in those games though then he shouldn't have been playing then...

yeah but they do all the time. I'm pretty sure medical is now in the booth watching for these types of things.

No, I know. My point was more that we'd have known. Don't u think?
No, as was pointed out in one of the articles yesterday, SU doesn't generally disclose concussions until a player has been medically disqualified.

I don't think we would have known unless he was held out. He did miss the Duke game. He did miss spring. I just dont think that all of his concussions happened in practice. I do believe players get 'concussed' during games but don't come out and play the next weekend. Kids hide injuries.

Wow

Really sucks for AJ. He's Orange through and through.

I've told others that I can't get my head around the concussion thing. He hadn't played so it must have been in practice. But we protect the hell out of the QBs with different colored jerseys and the soft shell padding over helmets. Usually hitting the QB is a no no. Only thing I can imagine is he may have been running some skout plays, got tripped up and hit his head on the ground.

Regardless, really sucks and I'm glad he is staying here in school.

That's what I don't get. It's been 11 months since he played a game. He hurt his hand, was learning a new grip and redshirting. Suddenly his career is over due to concussions?

We'll have to get used to suddenly losing players like this as there's more and more scrutiny of these things and of course they'll have our best wishes going forward in life. But how does a kid who hasn't played since last season suddenly have multiple concussions? And if it was based on something that happened last year, why did it take so long to determine it? It doesn't make sense.

Concussions are cumulative for these decisions. One, from what I understand, took place in the spring. I'm told he suffered one last week, too. Everyone is still assuming he's only been playing QB. They also don't publicly mention the concussions, particularly if they happen in practices.

Did he have any in HS?

I assure you. This line of thought will go no where. There is no need for mystery here.

Things to keep in mind are

1. Concussions are cumulative in nature and specific to severity regardless of when they happened (HS, College)
2. Football is a contact sport and not all contact happens between heads - such as landing on the ground.
3. Less contact is required after each subsequent concussion.

of course I just saw jek posted the same basic info.

Scott Shafer on AJ Long being DQ'd due to concussions: "It just breaks your heart when any player can't play the game anymore."

Asked Shafer if he could go into specifics on how a backup QB, likely protected in practice, gets multiple concussions: "No."

Shafer made it sound like AJ Long came back from his hand injury and then suffered the most recent concussion.

Shafer said AJ Long's concussion came during a "thud" session of practice. That's hitting above the waist without tackling.

Yeah - he also said that one of the reasons it was disconcerting was that it wasn't a particular violent play.

There it is. so Lets end it now. Any coaches here put QB's through a thud practice. Nope.

Love AJ. Hes a good kid and will help us in anyway he can. Lets move on from the Jesse Ventura conspiracy theories.

Can't blame this on the coaches (not sure if you are or not). The players get "thudded" way worse during games.

Also, the QB's aren't fair game for a big "thud" during practice. It just doesn't work like that. He could've been looking the other way and got his head snapped back or to the side really quick on an inconspicuous play. There are several different ways this could've happened.

He must have a history of concussions, whether or not they were diagnosed properly, for him to get so screwed up so easily.

Heartbreaker.
