Alan Griffin is real, and he's spectacular

Nice job Mr Griffin!
I won't drag this thread into politics and social issues, but it's really encouraging when you see young people with a voice speaking out and trying to make a difference

What is box plus minus

To give a sense of the scale:
  • +10.0 is an all-time season (think peak Jordan or LeBron)
  • +8.0 is an MVP season (think peak Dirk or peak Shaq)
  • +6.0 is an all-NBA season
  • +4.0 is in all-star consideration
  • +2.0 is a good starter
  • +0.0 is a decent starter or solid 6th man
  • -2.0 is a bench player (this is also defined as "replacement level")
  • Below -2.0 are many end-of-bench players
As a comparison, Elijah Hughes led the team last year with a box plus minus of 7.3, which is pretty darned good.

So, you’re saying we just added a dude that is BETTER than LeBron?!?!?!

So, apparently HoWash, Goodine, and Carey were not excellent at basketball last year.
Who knew?

Was I the only one that read the post's headline and immediately thought it read "Alan Griffin ruled ineligible"?

I guess I just assume the worst.

This is great news!!!

Every time I see the thread on my phone I read it as ineligible. My first thought is ... “What now?” Then I reread it and calm down.

I think there is something very Blue v Gold dress going on here.

Nope. But I can say Alan has put up some very impressive numbers during his limited minutes at Illinois. If you are an advanced stats kind of person, he is someone to get very excited about.

His averages per 40 minutes:

19.8p 10.0r 1.4a 1.0s 0.5b 32.7+ 7.3mfg 0.4mft 1.7to 2.5pf 11.9- = 20.8np 12.1oe 8.7fg

He's a very efficient scorer an under-rated rebounder and doesn't hurt his team with mistakes. He averaged only 18.1ppg. The guy ahead of him was Avo Dosunmu who averaged this:

19.8p 5.2r 4.0a 1.0s 0.2b 30.2+ 8.3mfg 1.0mft 3.2to 2.0pf 14.5- = 15.7np 10.5oe 5.2fg He averaged 33.5mpg

Griffin looks like better player statistically and both were sophomores. That suggests, as I think I've read in a much earlier post that Dosunmu was the better defender.

Giriffin looks like quire a talent but I don't know that he will improve our defense, which is what we need more than anything. But I'm intrigued by his rebounding numbers. Kid is jumping jack.

I don’t think they will all do it, but we have three players that could shoot 40% from 3 point range. I think JGIII, Buddy and Griffin will all shoot over 35% and at least one over 40%.

so last year we had:
1 All NBA Level Guy
3 All Star Level Guys
3 Really Good Starters

And yet we were a bubble team, hmmmm.

Unfortunately the advanced defensive metrics showed

1 Biddie Basketball All time Great
3 HS JV All Stars
3 Mediocre CYO Bench Players

So it all balanced out in the end

that’s the main reason I am probably not as high on this season as others seem to be. We need massive defensive improvement. It could happen and I obviously hope it does, but I’m in wait and see mode

Well, the upside is just having a season will be such a win that the results would have to be really bad (especially with help on the way) to be too disappointing.

** Please don’t hold me to this statement if we are hovering at .500 and staring at the NIT as the season gets rolling. Not sure we can count on canceling the Tournament again to avoid being on the wrong side of the bubble.
