Is insulting, albeit unintentionally. Its lazy analysis and has no bearing in reality. As if all guards "back in the day" were as gifted as he.

Gotta disagree. Only way you would be insulted is if you're searching for an insult.

It's clearly a compliment -- and a reference to certain players from earlier eras. Types of players who are much less common in today's game.

Wasn't sure if the comment was a bit sarcastic but the old school refers to the fundamentally sound pass first point guard (or "team oriented")-- generally associated with the 60's- guys or before, like Clyde Frazier and not later guys like Iverson.

...or Flynn. Ennis is far more like Stockton and Kidd. Plays under control (both physically and ego-wise) and keeps his game simple. He has a great point-guard skill set and a phenomenal head on his shoulders.

In his mind, it's never about him, always "team first".

its only partially complimentary. there is also a hint of "he's not really athletic but relies on guile and technique to get by" going on here.

I agree, Stockton is always who I thought of. If people want to take that as an insult I don't know what to say?

Larry Bird was old school, so was Magic Johnson. They couldn't jump out of the gym but they had a wily, crafty, intellectual game that proved superior to just physicality. Michael Jordan's work ethic was old school. Seems to me being called "old school" is nothing but a tremendous compliment, not an insult in the least.

This is you imagining that for some nefarious reason. The old school comments are indicative of how point guards used to be expected to play--finding the open man, being a good ball handler and running the offense. Any commentator worth their salt has gone out of their way to give big kudos to Ennis for the cool, calm way he handles things. Just like the old time PGs used to handle things.

Seems like you are reaching to find a negative interpretation for what most of us consider a compliment.

He's a true pg something that lacks in the game nowadays. That makes it old school I guess.

This is exactly it there just aren't many real pg's anymore. Its almost all scoring guards that have learned to play some pg. Guys that dominate the ball and the shots rather than guys that dominate the game by controlling it through having the ball like Tyler and many of the old time great pg's do/did.

I'd take it a little further and say that when it comes to the elite college teams recruiting game and the ranking system most of the attention and hype goes to the PGs who put up a gagillion points per game in high school. It's gotten kind of stupid.

I've seen many mid major semi-athletic PGs run their teams offenses much better than the flash and dash major conference media darlings of the past couple of decades. Lots of them aren't/weren't great scorers because it's more of a team thing with them.

I think if Ennis can keep doing what he's doing, someone with the initials JB, who knows a little about the point guard position, will reinforce some of the more optimistic posters opinions with a lot of praise of his own. That time will most likely come. JB doesn't like anything premature.

These are the threads we have these days. When you're winning, gotta talk about something, I guess?
