Alteration to football kickoff rule approved .. fair catch kicks will come out to the 25.

The complete removal of the kicking game can’t be far behind... :(
To be replaced by something really silly, like the XFL scramble? :)

We can call it handball. No, wait, that name is taken... ;)

Just as long as we also give up the artifice of calling it "football," and cede that to its rightful owner -- the sport we would rather call "soccer."
No. We don't use metric. We don't like socialism. We celebrate college athletes and teams. We call bathrooms...restrooms and we call the slow boring sport with silly offsides rules soccer.

I'm late to the party here. 2 Questions:
1. Do all touchbacks come out to the 25 yd line now (maybe they did last year and I didn't remember)?
2. I imagine you can still call for a fair catch on a kickoff anywhere outside the 25 and the ball is spotted there - right? It's just if you do it inside the 25, it comes out to the 25.

College touchbacks come out to the 25 since 2012 i think. That was the same year they moved the kickoff spot up to the 35 as well. And yes you can still fair catch a ball anywhere and have it at that spot, just anything fair caught between the 25 yard line and goal line will now also be considered a touchback. This is a kickoff rule only. You fair catch a punt at the 3 and your're still starting at the 3.

In addition to what Pyle said, only kickoff touchbacks come out to the 25, punt touchbacks still go out to the 20. I think they did it as something of a discouragement of having kickers constantly put it out of the endzone on the fly.

Copy all, thanks.

In other news:
I'm baffled by recent punt return strategy: It seems 10 or more years ago on any punt roughly inside the 10, the returner would let it go hoping it would bounce into the end zone (which it usually did) for a touchback. Now I see these punts being routinely fair caught even inside the 5. I don't get it. What's the difference between getting at the 5 (if fair caught) or getting it at the 2 (if it fails to go into the end zone)? There's a much greater chance it goes in for a touchback whereby you'd get the ball at the 20 as opposed to inside the 10 or even deeper. Anybody got an answer for this? What's changed?

Hmmm...interesting disincentive. Thanks.

No more field goals, no more extra points, no more onside kicks, no more fake field goals/extra points (hello Riley Dixon), no more kick/punt returns for touchdowns, etc., etc.. No more late game comebacks/upsets related to these. No more Kick Six. No more (fake?) kick off return reverses (hello Gators).

It would yield a game that doesn’t resemble anything that any of us have seen.

It would also need to be renamed. Millhouseball, anyone? NML?

I realize that many people are looking at ways to reduce player injuries. Eliminating most of the exciting plays in the game is not something that I’d like to see. If the changes stop here and yield “touch backs” for most kick offs/punts then that’s OK, as long as the (occasional) option to attempt a return or onside kick is retained.

It was step 2.

Step 3 (final step), is that the ball just starts at the 25 after a kickoff. You know it's coming.

There will be some type of exception rule for onside kicks, like under 2 minutes in the 4th quarter unless you're down by X points.

Maybe the NCAA will implement the Greg Robinson Kick Rule and teams can start routinely punting on 3rd down?

I'm pretty sure NCAA bylaws stipulate that Millhouseball is reserved solely for the elimination of punting.

kicking is stupid. most of the time it doesn't matter and guys get hurt for no reason. instead we get idiotic rules like the nfl saying you can't lower your head - have any of those nitwits ever run before? we want guys to hit with their shoulder, we don't want them to hit high, but we don't want them to have their head near their shoulders when they do it

part of the reason kickoffs can go away is the games are too long and they just waste time

when you score in basketball, you don't have anyone kicking the ball to get the game going again, the other team just takes the ball. and it's fine

Let’s get rid of after-goal face offs in hockey and lacrosse while we’re at it.

I for one enjoy the kicking aspects of the game, but like you, would prefer to see Dino do even less punting.

Just curious, though... if one were to completely get rid of punting, what does a team do on 4th and long on their own 20? Heck, DBs would even be told not to intercept long passes when the opposition is still deep in their own half. Why intercept at your own 30 when you just might get the ball at the other team’s 20? Just bat the ball down instead. <yawn>

Once again, a very different game than any of us are used to. Perhaps you can convince the XFL2 to go for your vision of the game. ;)

It’s like having a jump ball every time someone scores a basket. It’s soooo messed up and why I refuse to follow that sport.

And what about the whole whoever was closest to the ball after a missed shot gets possession? If you miss a shot and nobody else touched it you should lose possession!!!

Faceoffs after goals were eliminated for the 1979 season. It was a spectacular failure because it slowed the game down for massive substitutions that had not been seen before. They were restored in the 1980 season.

that is easy enough to solve

i'm with you. a bunch of guys chasing a ball they know they'll never get to seems very weird.

I love the faceoff in lacrosse over giving the other team possession. I would just move the wings in closer to prevent one faceoff guy from total domination.

Had never thought about the shot possession before. Interesting thought. This would definitely cut down on crazy and errant shots and you'd have to value shot selection more. I think I'd like it.

Interesting idea about moving the wings in closer. I prefer they get rid of the pinched heads and fishing net pockets that make it impossible to put the ball on the turf.

Increased ability to dislodge the ball would put less emphasis on a face off specialist and make face offs more like hockey face offs.

The lack of change in possession has slowed the game down considerably to make it far less exciting than it used to be.

As one of our fans has as his Laxpower sig block - Straight sidewalls. No offset. Freedom! (With a Braveheart emoji)

That’s perfectly stated - straight sidewalls & no offset. Leave the goofy pinched heads to the Canucks’ indoor game.

I forgot to add - limit the sidewalls to 1.5". A major part of the "Bag" is the huge sidewall.
