that Patterson takes Cooney's role next year, whatever it may be? I think Patterson is ahead of Cooney on the depth chart and gets more minutes when games roll around. Just my 2 cents.

Tough to tell until you see the kid play. Cooney was anointed the next GMAC before last season started. Obviously that didn't pan out. However, I really feel good about Cooney next year. I think he he will make a big (red shirt) sophomore improvement. He won't get the quick hook next year and I think that will help with his confidence.

And just a follow-up. I really think Cooney's off-season focus shouldn't be shooting. The reason his shots aren't falling in games is because of confidence, not his form. He will have more minutes next year and will play more relaxed. The shots will start to fall then

What he really needs to work on is his ball handling. If he can develop into a solid ball handler, he can be the solution for giving Ennis a breather, thus getting additional minutes.

Just my opinion.

Wow, not the Cooney I saw. I tend to agree with the OP, that Cooney as the third guard is no lock.

But with the dearth of outside 3 pt shooting, I have to give BJ a punchers chance. I think BJ's form is ahead of Buss. If Cooney continues to wilt under pressure, JB is going to have a tough decision on when to pull the plug. Then kind of like Dirty over Grant, BJ may be needed over Buss.

JB doesn't like to play freshman big time minutes unless their an absolute stud or we're lacking depth at their position. Buss will get some PT next year, but Cooney, Ennis and Gbinjie will get the majority of the guard minutes.

How often does JB play 4 guards?

I agree that those three will probably get most of the minutes.
But if neither of BJ and Patterson redshirt, there will be an intense competition for that second and third guard. All five of these guys came to play and contribute. This might be reason enough to rotate a fourth guard in sparingly.
Although Ennis is the only must start (only true PG), watch out for any of the younger players to find their way in if Cooney or Mike G struggle early. I would guess Ennis and Gbinije start.

Patterson should get minutes at the back up pg. He has improved his ball handling, while Cooney still hasn't dribbled with his left hand. I think Silent G will get first shot at the off guard spot with Cooney coming in to back him up.

Day "one" of year three?

I don't think anyone will know anything for certain before Ennis, Patterson, Johnson actually get on campus and, you know, start practicing against each other.

I really like Cooney but I think he will be in a dog fight for minutes next year. Paterson and BJ are both faster and longer than he is so Cooney has to clearly out shoot them! My money is on BJ as the first guard off the bench.

maybe Cooney knows something that we don't...hence why he is hitting the gym early :)

I have seen patterson. He is not ahead of TC. And he won't be next year.

Cooney all the way based on defense alone, if nothing else. However, I believe his shot will come back to him also.

You realize that Gbinije and Patterson are both known for their defense as one of their biggest strengths, have more athleticism, and better size than Cooney as well for the top of the zone right? If Cooney is starting next year, meaning he's better than all of Gbinije, Patterson and Johnson, then were probably going to have a long year. I understand the hope for him to improve and everybody likes his hustle and is pulling for him. At some point tho people have to be realistic and stop with the delusional thoughts that he showed anything this year to suggest he should be the starter from day one next year. He was in a situation where he was competing for minutes against himself and still couldn't get on the floor. Maybe he makes huge strides and is a really good player for us next year. If so great it means were a better team, but the delusional fans on here saying he should start from day 1, should get on the floor for his defense alone, I just don't get it.

Cooney has had 2 full years of experience on the top of the zone. Patterson and BJ have zero. Cooney has the edge on that alone. We can all speculate but the bottom line is JB favors experience and BJ and Patterson have a lot of catching up to do.

I could see Gbinije possibly getting the start because of his size and having a year under his belt learning the zone. But I really don't see Patterson edging out Cooney as the next guard off the bench and I think Cooney will log 20+ minutes a game.

Call me delusional for thinking Cooney showed a lot of ability and athleticism but just lacked the confidence and opportunity. That's fine. I'll call you a pessimist who wouldn't know what makes a good basketball player if it hit you in the face.

Playing the zone isn't rocket science.

I don't get all the harp on Cooney. He will make a big jump next year just like most freshmen do. We need to stop hyping freshman so much because we get let down annually. Fact is most players have a dear in headlights look their first year.

Usually JB goes 3 guards, but with BJ Gbinije we don't know what postion they will play. And with Patterson, Gbinije, CJ, Dajaun and Ennis all able to attack off the dribble, and with Rons defense, I don't think JB should or will hold either back.

At worst case Ron could be a isolation clone of Brandon Triche if he doesn't make his three point attempts. I do think hes alittle faster though, and his midrange shot can fadeaway and is less arm and more hands in his release which bodes well. Maybe he will be able to back down his defender at a slower pace. Brandon was good at that but had a hard time shooting once he did and opted more for attacking the low post.

I think JB will be high on Cooney and he will atleast play 15 minutes. That being said no worries.

Igor, is that you? The zone we play is much more complicated than you realize.

I think Gbinije will be the second best ball handler on the team.
