Andre Drummond- Walk On

Wow, awesome story - and the right decision (although I couldn't blame him for not doing it). Too bad Calhoun wasn't the one that made it.

best walk on in the country

followed by matt tomaszewski

i thought there were rules about players as walk ons who would have other scholarship offers

1 year of in-state tuition to UConn will be more than covered in Drummond's first practice as a pro.

Hmmmm so where is that non-institutional financial aid coming from? Could it be a loan based on his propects for being a first round pick in the next NBA draft?? Color me a skeptic.
I think that just means it can't come from the school, aka it comes from the state or anywhere besides the school

It's funny (or sad) to read the UConn board discuss this.

They are acting like this is a great thing for UConn, and complaining that it's not getting more press. I hope it does get more press, everyone should know how low Calhoun goes to get recruits and skirt NCAA rules.

There are, they just don't apply at UConn like they do elsewhere.

The way it was described "non-institutional financial aid" implies to me that it isn't just a case of Ma & Pa Drummond forking over all of the cash to pay young Andre's way to UConn, that someone else was making the money available to pay his tuition. So who is the someone else and how is it not illegal? Has anyone else done it, or is UConn the first to exploit this loophole.

Seems to me that the point of taking away scholarships should be to limit the number of scholarship quality players that the program can have. Not to see how creative they can get at finding other ways to underwrite the cost of tuition for those scholarship players.

Damn it! Now I'm going to have to root for Drummond all year.

did you go to college? I did and have federal student loans or whatever it just means UConn can't give him like a academic or other type scholarship or loan directly through them

Yeah, I don't necessarily see what would be illegal about it. I'm sure plenty of people wouldn't mind making a student loan to a guy who is going to be a millionaire in about 6 or 7 months.

And yeah, very classy move by Drummond. Good for him. I'll hate him because he plays for Uconn, but I'm more likely to root for him in the NBA now.

Good story. Very nice of him to step up like that.

maybe uconn does belong in the acc after all .i salute drummond but the whole deal has the stench of duke and their first round "walkons". calhoun is the ultimate cutthroat king when it comes to selling out his promises to schollies just to make room for new and improved recruits. same old story but with a new twist at the end. drummond was generous.

So boosters giving scholarships to players is OK? I'm pretty sure big schools have people ready to give some players 300K "loans" for a year to play there, you know for other expenses. Who cares, since they will pay it off after 1 year in NBA.

I have no problem with federal bank doing it but if it's "plenty of people" that should be illegal.

lol at the "I will take my scholarship next year" quote...with the New Orleans Hornets.

Sorry, I meant more the normal sources of student loans, though it didn't come out that way.

Though of course, I'm sure there are plenty of boosters who wouldn't have minded giving him a loan either...

Though when you think about it, there's nothing really all that wrong with a booster loaning him money. I assume it's against the NCAA rules, I don't mean nothing wrong in that sense, but hey, my parents paid for me to go to school. And if you have a rich uncle or friend of the family who wants to either pay for you to go to school, or loan you the money, I really don't see anything wrong with that. I know the NCAA has their reasons, but there are some things that are wrong because they are wrong, and some things that are wrong only because they are against the rules. (If th at makes any sense)

disagree strongly here. there is EVERYTHING wrong with boosters loaning money to recruits. and it is illegal.

Illegal based on NCAA rules, right?

Which is fine, it's probably better in the long run that you try and outlaw stuff like that or you'd turn into the NBA pretty quickly, which the NCAA wants to avoid.

The only Duke player I can think of was Melchionni and his family paid for his first year b/c K told him there was no room at the inn until the following year. Completely the opposite of Calhoun.
