Andre Drummond- Walk On

The only Duke player I can think of was Melchionni and his family paid for his first year b/c K told him there was no room at the inn until the following year. Completely the opposite of Calhoun.

That's how I remember it, though there may be something else to it.

It is pretty shady the way Calhoun, and other coaches, use those scholarships. My thought is that as long as a kid is keeping up with his schoolwork (which I suppose can be defined in any number of ways), he keeps the schollie.

I wonder how we would've handled a similar situation. I'm guessing in a pretty similar manner.

langdon? and student boozer was driving humvees with a 5k stereo.hmmmm.

NCAA should do something about it only because if this starts to get abused more, Private schools will get ***ed. It's a lot easier to fill up a state school like UCONN with highly rated walkons who only need to get $5000 to attend it, while 'Cuse will have no chance as players will have to get like $40K in loans.

Kinda messed up to use taxpayer subsidies to bring in a player for one year to a state school who has no plans of actually getting an education (reason it's only 5K in the first place).

UConn is $22k for in-state tuition plus room & board, $39k for out of state. Books and fees are another estimated $3.5k.

Nice that it all worked out, but let's be realistic here. It would seem that he ONLY relinquished his schollie once he found out he could get grants somewhere else. If he was so respectful and kind, it would have never gotten to that point.

Ummm ... don't know about that. The article said that Drummond gave up the schollie back in November. But to me it doesn't matter ... the kid is a class act. The school sucks big time. The kid deserves and applause when we play them ... from everybody. The school and Calhoun ... well that's another story.

For those asking why Drummond is allowed to walk-on after being recruited:

You can walk-on if you're recruited IF you don't receive any loans or financial aid and pay your own way. Did AD pay his own way? Who knows if he has that kind of money, but as far as UConn is concerned he did.

I thought Boozer's dad was the one that got the six figure job at some Pharma company by a Duke booster for the time he was there. Wasn't that the same class where the other recruits mother got a similar hook-up even though she was vastly unqualified for the job she was given.

Second to last line of the article:

It's a testament to the character of Drummond and his family that they volunteered to come off scholarship once they learned that was feasible under NCAA rules.

The key word is "feasible". He didn't give it up until he found out he could get free money elsewhere.

Drummond probably decided to take the walk-on slot and pay his own way this year because he will be able to quickly repay the loan sometime in July, after he signs a fat NBA contract. Kid is a beast.

Calhoun is the devil

It's funny the two most despicable human beings in college basketball both start with "Cal"
