Andre Szmyt: Browns

Somewhat on topic but with how good NFL kicking has become, has there been any talk about narrowing the goalpost width again? I think it’s stupid to have 25-yard PATs and teams now just have to cross midfield to get a shot at 3 points. Anything inside the 40 feels automatic which kills any sense of drama. Shrink the target to get the percentages down. Prize sniper accuracy over strong legs.

Not saying it shouldn't be done...the posts seem so much more narrow when you are on the field compared to seeing it on TV.

When I go check some of the HS, college, and pro stadiums to complete light levels or fine tunes I am always in awe of how easy some kickers make it look.

I think JMA requested you by name to retune our lighting in late Nov

The number of kicks that seem like they would go in with 2yd wide posts is amazing.

its interesting to note that orginally the fields had no end zones. Thats why the goal posts were in the line for so long. Then the moved posts to the back like college, then they moved them back to the front. Then they settled on the back of the end zone again.

its strange that they haven't evolved the width in all these years.

Looks like they made them almost 5 feet narrower in 1991. But cool history none the less!

Szmyt needs a vowel movement.
I know, my comment stinks.
Szmyt's systyr's name is Flynn

I suppose I don't have to worry about antagonizing him. He's not on the team any more.
Good Luck w/the Browns*.

*Did you know the Browns are kind of an expansion team that started up again in 1999 when Art Modell (the guy who drafted and honored Ernie Davis's 3 year $200K contract) moved the original Browns to Baltimore in 1996.

Not completely accurate. There were court battles and Modell was allowed to take his staff etc. and start a new franchise in Baltimore. The Browns were put on a temporary three year hold while they built a new stadium. The Browns resumed play in 1999 and the league never regarded them as an expansion team.

Yes, I read that too. That’s why I qualified it with the “kind of an expansion team.”
I didn’t think Syracusefan readers would be too interested in the details so I glossed over it. To the average fan, the Browns were expunged from the NFL for a few years by moving to Baltimore. Then they reappeared a few years later.
I do appreciate, however, your understanding of this issue and attention to detail. We generally have intelligent fans here.

LOL because I'm not sure if you were including me in that category. In any event, The Browns have always had an interesting history. As you may well know, The franchise began as part of a newly formed league in competition with the NFL. Paul Brown the co-owner and first coach had had success at Ohio State and especially with a WWII Great Lakes naval team. Several former players from both were on the first Brown teams.

When the new league fell apart, the Browns joined the NFL and dominated for some time. Then came the AFL and in the eventual merger with the NFL. At that time the Browns and the Steelers were moved to the newly reorganized AFL, a fact that enraged Giant fans who were opposed to losing their long time rivalry with both. If you were around to witnessed the duels between Jim Brown and Sam Huff the Giant MLB you'd understand why.

It's been long forgotten , but to quell the protest the league promised that the Giants would always annually play the Steelers and Browns. So much for promises.

In the end, the Steelers prospered in The AFL and the Browns dominance slowly faded. One can only imaging what might have been had Ernie lived to play

A last thought . Service teams during both WWII and the Korean war have always been powerful. The WWII teams were loaded with College All-Americans. There's an interest book called "The Mosquito Bowl" about a game involving college players that took place on Guadalcanal during the war.

In 1952 SU played a Bolling Field Airforce team in the first game of the season, in what many consider would be a pushover. Except Bolling field was an all-star college team, quarterbacked by All America and future Redskin, Al Dorow. It was close, but we didn't win.
