Is that true? I legitimately have no idea what Engelstad does here.If he was hired to fix the defense, then I would consider it a successful hire.

He’s part of the juicing stationLately he’s looking more like the Dude on the sidelines than an assistant coach….
He's angling to stay on staff should a coaching change occur I'm sure.Lately he’s looking more like the Dude on the sidelines than an assistant coach….
I thought he was working with Abernathy. He’s part of the juicing station
That's what I think too, but I'm ready to give credit to the coaching staff if they really did coach the defense into the unit they are now.I think the defensive improvements come from landing more athletic defensive guys like Kyle and Kingz.
I can’t give this staff any credit for actually coaching/teaching anything.
They did the bare minimum so I guess there’s some credit to be given. Granted he also coached last years garbage so what’s the adjusted factor? PlayersThat's what I think too, but I'm ready to give credit to the coaching staff if they really did coach the defense into the unit they are now.
This is nonsense. There is a night and day difference between how this team executes on defense as compared to last season. Of course, some of that is the players and their willingness to buy in. But there has also been a huge difference in help side and on ball rotations, and in how they are defending the high pick and roll, cutters, switches, and off ball screens. The energy and accountability on that side of the court is also night and day. This is function of coaching and holding the players accountable.I think the defensive improvements come from landing more athletic defensive guys like Kyle and Kingz.

If you haven't had the opportunity to watch practice - and you know what a small list that is - comments about the assistants's roles and competencies shouldn't be taken seriously. It’s funny to me how much the assistants are beaten down on this board. Why do people think assistant coaches have such a massive impact in college basketball? They don’t. They are there to recruit and help run practices. Can anyone name a time where a college kid got drafted and he specifically thanked an assistant coach by name ? I can’t….
We were spoiled with Bernie Fine so we think that’s the norm. I guess since I’ve been to practices I understand their roles more, but I see differences in the defense this year and most notably a change with William Kyle at the FT line which comes from coaching and hard work on his part. But man we talk about the same things over and over on here
I think you vastly overstate Bernie’s impact. But that dude knew how to rock a clipboard. It’s funny to me how much the assistants are beaten down on this board. With that inside view of the program, what do you think is most responsible for the marked improvement on D? Is it pretty much the upgrade of the roster, or is the staff doing anything differently? Who on the staff plays the biggest role in training the players on this side of the ball? It’s funny to me how much the assistants are beaten down on this board. Better players and attitude. Dan and Red are in charge of D. Assistants like Gmac Red Hopkins and Fine ran the show at least in practice when Boeheim was in charge. UConn’s top 2 assistants are also very highly regarded todayIt’s funny to me how much the assistants are beaten down on this board.
