I think the following will come with Gerry

I’m likely going to get some heat for this but this is just word salad. Everyone says that about every coach in every sport. There’s not something unique about Gmac looking for players that have those traits. Every coach wants that. Fran wants that and look at the season last year. Gmac has been a HC for a short period of time, what makes him a good talent evaluator at this point. Maybe he is but who knows yet. Identifying D1 talent while balancing our NIL will tell us whether he’s a good talent evaluator. Nobody knows that yet.

None of this a knock on Gmac at all. Less like Fran but still some similarities. We don’t know what things will look like or how successful he’ll be for awhile.

We're at the point in the honeymoon period where everyone can just imbue Gmac with any positive coaching attribute they want.

Gmac showed a lot of promise at a Siena, however there were warts.

The last 2 seasons Siena was 22-18 in low major MAAC action, how does this transfer to success in the ACC? I get Siena had a good showing against Duke, but let’s be honest Duke treated and prepped for this game like a scrimmage.

My concern, Gmac had a few roster management issues imo, how do you have only 5 players available? Yes Gmac had a couple of injured guys but it’s also my understanding he didn’t play mult players to save their eligibility for transfer and lost a starter at the end of the the season because he was on his 7th season and ruled ineligible by the NCAA, which could lead to game forfeitures. How / why was Chandler recruited, approved in-house and allowed to play by Siena?

Fingers crossed he works out for the Orange! His staff & roster selection is going to be interesting.

Kentucky had 14 losses this season. So they paid almost one million per loss. 😂
The number one skill of a successful staff is talent evaluation. That is why we excelled all those years. Kentucky wasted money. Gerry is good at talent evaluation.

Player development is mostly up to the player. That is what the most improved player in his league told me. Look at JJ, great athlete, but not good at basketball. Off the chart quickness and reflexes but not good hand eye coordination. Had a great attitude and a hard worker, but it was not in him to have a consistent outside shot.

roster management? 13 scholarship players became 7 including losing 3 of his top 6 and his best 2 big men. its hard to manage a roster with that many casualties.

I’m very familiar with the roster. At least 3 (Jones, Ducharme, Jackson) were healthy and didn’t play to save eligibility. He lost a starter (Chandler) because he never should have been self-cleared by Siena and was deemed ineligible by the NCAA at the end of the season, the 3 he didn’t play all season I mentioned above got PT the prior year. The other 2 were freshman (he chose not to play down the stretch (Henderson and Jones). A freshman Schlager and d2 transfer Goodrick were legit injuries.

Don’t get me wrong, Gerry did a good job but there were issues.

ducharme was out the whole season with a shoulder injury. bottom line is 13 became 7.

My understanding was that had resolved itself. What his conditioning was and when the decision was made to safe eligibility could be debated (timing). He’s already in the portal as is Jones.

How 13 became 7 is somewhat problematic, my prior post was bang on accurate.

not really but ok. agree to disagree.

Well, he was an assistant coach for a program that had nine NCAA appearances in 15 seasons, including two Final Fours, plus another tournament appearance at Siena. And so did Red, except for Siena, but I think most people will recognize that there is a huge difference between Gerry and Red from the last two seasons.

I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying Gerry has a clear cut vision of what he wants and what he needs to win.

I don’t know that this argument actually makes your point. Red and Gmac were both part of the staff during those 9 appearances. By that argument Red should have been more effective than he was and he had far more years of experience. There are tons of examples of assistants being on staffs in all sports and failing as HC.

Now, Gmac will do better than Red, I have no doubts about that. How much better is the question and whether he’s got the experience yet to evaluate a squad for D1, we don’t know. My argument was purely about over emphasizing his traits like they’re unique and stating he’s a good talent evaluator. That’s unknown at this point. I don’t know that you said anything that changes that fact. It’s an unknown at this point. Every coach can at least evaluate some talent.

A very small sample size and totally different circumstances, but just rewatch Cuse vs Duke and Siena vs Duke. Yes, they had similar backgrounds but I, among many, feel very strongly that Gerry will outperform Red's record his first three season.

If fact, if he doesn't, I will walk from Briancuse's house in Jersey all the way to Syracuse. LOL.

apropos of nothing, I am feeling particularly good today about which posters I've opted to ignore
Jimmy Fallon Hello GIF by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

He mentioned several times that it was critical for his players to understand how special Syracuse is, what the brand represents, etc. I'm not sure that's going to resonate with many of the more sought-after portal targets who are chasing 7 figures. He says he understands that things have changed but I hope realizes that NIL and a pathway to the pros has to be the driver and not the brand.

I will say he speaks like a guy in command and his articulation is impressive. I can only imagine Red fumbling through those answers. Not everyone is good at public speaking, and it shouldn't be the sole litmus, but usually when a person has their sphit together they are comfortable with these types of interviews because they'r not grasping for words.

Matt Park has done a phenomenal job sitting down with BB and now Gerry. Props to him for being prepared and not reading off notecards. Now if only his play-by-play could rise to that level.

I know interviews don't win games. But he's really good at them. He's stepping into this job with eyes wide open.

I really hope it works out.

Communication and consistency however can help win games. He did a really good job navigating the question around the struggles of last year the mentality of the players and coaches alike that played its role. Not once disrespecting Red but also not having to making it seem forced.

Ducharme had a serious shoulder injury. He wasnt kept out to save his eligibility.

Marcus Jackson was a strange case, MIssed most of the prior season with an MCL injury and only played in November this past year. No clue if his injury reared his ugly head, he was on his last year of eligibility. They were quite quiet about it - privacy issues and all.
