Anyone know which sportswriter asked JAB why Roberson didn't play today?

I disagree. Coach B handled it perfectly (Sometime the Local or National media) needs to put back in their place.

What's the worst that can come of it ?

Coach Boeheim rocks !!!!
Really? Never pick a fight with a guy that buys his ink in 500 gallon vats. Perhaps you never "read out of bounds" in the post standard. It set the program back 10 years. I will die believing that if jb wasn't such a to the local papers, they wouldn't have gone so hard at him.

It takes so little to be civil. It's sad that a guy that has everything in the world, can't be.
So i guess it would have been condescending if JAB would have invited him to stop by his office sometime to discuss the X's and O's of basketball.

The context was weird. The reporter said,"Roberson gave you some good minutes ..."

Don't know if he was being sarcastic or just stupid. Either way, JB has patience for neither.
I think he was starting to say that roberson gave you good minutess on the road at va tech, yet didn't play today. Here is the thing. People here whine about the short rotation and yet when a reporter asks about it, everyone defends jb for drilling the guy for the question. you can't have it both ways.

Silly. Very silly. Answer the question. Period. I didn't think he could help us win today. Have you complained about a shorter bench?

I think its a valid question. I would have liked to ask Jim as well, and I have no opinion on whether Roberson should have played or not.
I would just like to know Jim's thought process during the game. It does not mean I am criticizing his decision - just would like to know why. Because he has done it alot in the past does not mean its a silly question.

I think the problem is that questions are often framed as criticisms and coaches. (and we know JB) will be defensive at times. Not all questions on personnel decisions are personal attacks.

Look, I gave you one like but you don't get more likes for posting the same post.

the deal is if you want to ask some questions why not ask it outside the press conference? you can better control the question and the response..

That's your opinion it's silly. The guy who asked the question obviously knows nothing about Syracuse basketball or else why would he be so concerned about a kid who is 9th in minutes played and averaging 3 ppg. JAB obviously didn't want to blow a 15 point lead so he didn't substitute. You've been a fan long enough to know that JAB has a shorter bench come conference play and an even shorter bench come the second half of conference games. This writer obviously doesn't know that so he asked his question, where if you listen to the press conference it isn't even a question, it was a statement.

I don't have the link but the response is classic JAB. I really can't believe a professional or even a DO writer would ask that question.
I didn't hear that one but clearly that guy isn't a long time observer of this program under Jimmy. Unless Roberson offered something in the past to force himself onto the court,he is a freshman who will pay his dues with limited PT and off season development before he becomes a regular off the bench. He has a long way to go.With CJ going he might see more next season providing McCough doesn't star off the opening game. If Grant comes back he has less of a chance. If Jeremi does come back I really think that the NC comes back to Syracuse if they don't get it this coming March. I see Kaleb and McCullough making up the lost offense and boards that CJ gives. Obokoh will provide for the loss of Keita. I doubt that Ennis goes yet. He needs a lot of work on his offense first. If he addresses this in the off season I could see him go after next season.

I do know all that. So just answre the question jb. I played the guys that I thought would win the game. Period. No need for drama

Now Opus, you've been around for awhile. Seriously, why would someone ask JAB a question about why he didn't play one of his players. I can understand if it was someone like DC2 who was starting and now not playing to ask about that, but to ask about your fringe 8th or 9th guy in a game where your best two players are playing outstanding. Why risk sitting them. The writer was out of line. I respect your opinion and maybe you are right to remain silent, but should that question have really been asked.
All I will say it is called *tact*. I am not sure whether the reporter or JB used it. So... :)

As I heard it, his first response was that he had already answered the question.

I'll first say that I don't think this JB response even registers in the top 100 of inappropriate press conference moments in his career. I'm on dasher's side here. If JB is not in a position to be magnanimous, then who on this big round ball is? The question - in as much as he even let the guy ask it - is valid. Reporters come to the PC with many goals, maybe this guy was writing a piece about Roberson or the development of players at Syracuse, or whatever.

Additionally, you can't play this "oh you think you know better than me" card, when JB himself was less than a minute removed from saying he should have subbed Grant out more because he was tired at the end of the game. In fact he said the whole team was tired and "had lost a step on defense" towards the end. Coach can't have it both ways - to imply that his decisions are beyond questioning right after talking about self-admitted mistakes.

The bottom line is that it appears JB feels that only he can evaluate his own performance. Or at the very least the media is not qualified or "allowed" to judge it. All things considered, who can blame him? He's earned the right to feel like writers aren't qualified to judge him. We've certainly seen the media make more mistakes in their jobs than JB has done in his in the past 5 years!

This got longer than I thought it would. To wrap up, this particular incident doesn't terribly bother me, but I have always felt that JB makes himself a smaller man when berates media people, especially these local mopes.

A writer is out of line for asking a ing totally legit question? He should know JAB is going to respond like an ass so he shouldn't ask it? Knowing how he would respond and STILL asking the question is more impressive to me.

There really wasnt much else to discuss about this game. It was a mismatch from 15 minute mark on..

It's a non-issue.
The guy asked a question (I think...because Boeheim was talking over him).
That's what happens at news conferences...reporters ask questions.
Boeheim's answer was a little amusing...hardly a big deal.
In fact, hardly any deal at all.

Then he'd get a follow of question along the lines of "So you don't think you can win with Roberson?"

Although there are ways of sugar-coating the question to legitimize it, it still hits two JB hot buttons:
1 - Playing Time - he's seen teams divided or players disillusioned over this issue in the past. Would prefer to nip it in the bud instead of making how much did Roberson play into the new "thing" this season. Whether making a scene that is seen by way more people than would've seen a regular coach-speak response is debatable.
2 - Why Didn't You ___ - He doesn't like these types of questions as they put him on the defensive and involve getting into hypotheticals, which can be misinterpreted and most coaches don't want to delve in to.
and possibly a 3rd - reporters asking nitpicky questions just to stir the pot and cause controversy. I don't think that was the intent here, but we just laid a beating on the royalty of our new conference and he's fielding end of the bench questions?

Put the combination together and it's likely he barely listened to the question before going into reporter beatdown mode.

Not trying to stir the pot here but every time Boeheim responds like that, he shows his insecurities. To riff on JB's question to the kid, how many wins does he need to have to not see questions like this as a personal affront on his coaching methods? I think we can say with some confidence that the kid didn't mean it that way but that's the way that Boeheim took it. Never completely understood that side of him. I know that there were alot of folks in town who weren't sold on him for a long, long time. Heck, my dad was one of them. And I'm sure that weighed on Boeheim. He's just that kind of guy. But after the championship year, even my dad (along with alot of other doubters) came around. Despite all the talk about getting that monkey off his back in '03, Boeheim has seemingly never been able to feel completely at ease about his job and coaching abilities. Who knows? Maybe that's the secret to his success? Maybe it's what keeps him going after all these years?
this response is just ridiculous!! The reporters question could not possibly be answered in a way that would ever leave the coach, player and fans feeling good. It's actually a question that guaranteed leaves someone upset. The reporter was in the wrong. JB has been at this over 32 years. Rookie mistake.

I still want to know why Boeheim stayed with the man to man defense when Hagan was eating up Ross Kindle in the ECAC's and that is the question that journo should have asked instead.

He answered the question. Why does he need to kiss the arse of a nitwit "reporter" in any particular manner? Baiting a coach isn't exactly civilized either. I hate the intro to a question in the manner this "reporter" used. I love it whenever a reporter gets their own pie tossed back in their faces.

Thank You J.B.!!

How much basketball do you have to know and how much do you have to know about this team? After an earlier game JB said he didn't play TR because the other team was playing a match-up zone. In another ACC game (more competitive game than this one) JB played TR. In this game he could have played TR before knowing for sure what kind of games CJ and Grant were going to have. He admitted the team was tired. I hope i'm not showing my ignorance if I'm curious why he didn't play Roberson.

Do you love it when reporters go out of their way to investigate Syracuse? Thank you JB

Here is the slight problem, while JB obviously knows whats hes doing and the results speak for themself, esp this season, The question was a fair question based on what JB had just said. He said right before the question- Grant probably played too much in this game. So JB walked right into that question. And i am a huge JB fan, reading his unauthorized biography right now and enjoying v much. Imo these reporters simply need to frame these questions with more respect. Something like, "Hey coach you just stated Grant played too many mins in this game and got tired in second half. Could you just give us a little of your thinking why you decided to play him the full forty mins today."

I mean obviously JB wanted a slightly tired Grant out there even over a fresh Roberson, and it worked out fine. But i think its a reasonable question for JB to field, given these head coaches pay grade, if asked correctly.

And to be honest i didnt even hear the question, too jumbled, but heard JBs response. And i thought like everyone else the part about his kids coach was hilarious and spot on.

Absolutely.

Regardless of how the game played out, it's a valid question.

Throw in the fact that a) our players (especially Grant, who probably had the best game of his career) were gassed down the stretch, b) Carolina jumped out to that early lead in large part because our forwards weren't rotating well, and c) it'd be nice to see Fair sit for a minute every time he drives into three people and coughs up the ball; one could be forgiven for wondering why Roberson didn't see the court.
