APR - One More Time

Otto, I would definitely take your numbers over mine, I'm kinda just winging it here.

923. If Mookie returns next year, I think that'll be our score. If he left for good in between the semesters and doesn't transfer, it'd be 904. And if he left for good and wasn't eligible when he left, it's 885. So Mookie's an important guy right now

So let's start with the worst case scenario, 885. That would mean we'd need a 970 from last year to be ok for 2014. Seems doable. If that was instead 904, you can bump the necessary score down to 951, and if it's 923, then it's 932. The only guy we lost last year was Dash, who transferred. So even with an 885, I'm somewhat confident we'll be ok.

Off-topic a bit, as a (presumed) Mets fan, any thoughts on the Wilpon settlement today?

I find your APR predictions more encouraging than anything to do with the Mets. That said, it's probably good that they settled - I don't have a ton of faith that the Wilpons are ever going to field a winning club, but this can't hurt our chances. At least we're stable and the threat of disaster isn't hanging over everyone's head. It's unfortunate that Fred got caught in such a bad situation; he really seems like a decent guy.

Regarding the APR - wouldn't it be something if Dashonte Riley and Mookie Jones end up being the only thing standing between Syracuse and a postseason ban?

Huge credit goes to Dashonte for sticking around last spring and finishing up his coursework. He - like Wes one year earlier - did the right thing simply for the sake of doing the right thing - which can't be said for some of his more-celebrated colleagues.

I've been so blinded by my hatred (or I guess just total lack of faith in their ability to spend any money) that I was kinda hoping they'd get nailed in this court case and have to sell right away. We'll see how it goes from here, a rebuild was probably needed.

Agreed on Dash; definitely good on him for sticking around and taking care of business in the class. And bad on Dion and Fab for not doing that. (Well i guess it isn't fair to say that about Dion yet, since it is more based on conjecture than anything else). I'm trying to put myself in their shoes; I wonder what I would do? Easy to say I'd go to class and get my stuff done, but I was also in college once, and I dunno.

These last few posts have me more optimistic about this APR stuff than I've been all year. I assume with Mookie it comes down to his standing when he left. Assuming he left in good standing after this year's Fall semester...He could come back next year and then finish the year off...and that would mean that we regain something we lost when he left? Do I have that right?

I'd like to add...has anyone (Jake?) heard anything definitive on the Mookster? Do we know if he's coming back?

Again, not sure how to count Mookie; I imagine we sit at 13 for the full year - even though he's not here, he's expected to be here.

May not help, but Wolf on UConn was a mid-season join last year and counted for only the second semester (2/2) from what I have been told. Not saying they are counted the same though, the NCAA being what it is.

Another element in the APR calculation is that former students can return to school, earn their degrees and earn bonus APR points for the institution. I don't know if those bonus points go on the APR at the time the degree is earned, or if they go back to the time when the kid first left school and only help if that year is still part of the rolling four year calculation.

I did notice that in JB's response to Arne Duncan he did specifically make mention of some of our kids coming back and ultimately getting their degrees.

Anyway here is a reference to the bonus, without any description of how it works. I haven't had much luck finding a full explanation of the calculation, although I believe I have seen it in the past.

"In stark contrast, 8,427 former Division I student-athletes have returned to college to earn their degrees in the past seven years. In the process, they earned a bonus point in the APR calculation for their former team."

APR Scorecards Show Improvement

Oh sweet, I didn't know there were bonus points for this. (Although frankly, why should there be? It would not be because of the athletic department that a guy came back to graduate). I hope that saves our asses because JB did mention several former players doing this (I am 90% sure Wes was one of them). But the more you hear about this APR the more "nuts" it sounds just like JB said.

Here are our scores for the last several years.

Men's Basketball Syracuse University NY 2004 - 2005 967
Men's Basketball Syracuse University NY 2005 - 2006 948
Men's Basketball Syracuse University NY 2006 - 2007 955
Men's Basketball Syracuse University NY 2007 - 2008 932
Men's Basketball Syracuse University NY 2008 - 2009 912 Immediate Penalty - Scholarship Reduction = 2
Men's Basketball Syracuse University NY 2009 - 2010 928

The NCAA publishes the scores here.

Those scores are actually the rolling 4 year scores, not the score for each individual y ear.

Interesting. Maybe we don't get any damage from Mookie this year.

Honestly, hearing that former players can come back and get us bonus points makes me feel 100% better about this.
