As far as the next Head basketball coach

I will remind you guys that I said don't put a down payment on worry when it came
to the A.D. search. Some here were very worked up about Lyke. Same advice for
Hoop coach. Let's wait and see what happens.
Why does this tread exist?

I wonder about the danger from hot metal playground equipment.
I highly doubt there was a mortality issue.

But you definitely could get a burn on your butt.

Most, certainly. I’m more worried about the top teams; call it top 5 or 6.
In raising money and recruiting, Duke has put themselves a level above. Every front running jock sniffer in the country seems to like Duke, and ESPN has aided them since the early 90's with Dookie V rooting them on during every single game, Duke related or not.

But even North Carolina isn't in that category. If you look at history, facilities, fanbase, fund raising... Syracuse is competitive with everybody else. A good coach can win big here again.

Success in college basketball all comes down to recruiting, first and foremost. The more talented team will win more often. Obviously, watching our team this season, there are exceptions.

But we had the talent to win. 5 top50 recruits in Freeman, Starling, Betsey, White and Anthony. We also had top portal recruits Kingz, George and Kyle. Highly talented guys that had already performed in high major conferences (more or less) and were reasonably expected to be good.

Right there, with our top 8, we should have had a rotation capable of beating almost any team in the ACC.

Duke, with 8 top50 recruits is the only team that clearly had higher rated talent, and possibly had better transfers as well.
Virginia, on the other hand, had only 1 top50 recruit and two others in the top100. They did have international kids which don't get ranked by RSCI very often
Miami had three top50 and two others in the top100
UNC had three top50 and three top100
Clemson had three top100 recruits
Louisville had two top50 and one top100
NC State had two top50 and three top100
FSU had nobody ranked by RSCI
Cal had four top100
Stanford had no top100
SMU had one top50 and two top100
VPI had two top100
Wake Forest had one top50 and two top100

I won't bother going over the losers who were even worse than Syracuse this season, but you could argue that even this season Syracuse had better talent than 12 out of the 13 teams that finished ahead of us in the rankings.

I wasn't going to go over the whole league player by player, but our ability to attract talent wasn't the problem. Team cohesiveness, effort and offensive and defensive schemes all cost us.

We also lost at least 3 games in our first 5 losses directly to terrible free throw shooting, which feels like salt and vinegar for our wounds.

So, back to the premise... Whoever coaches Syracuse next will be able to attract talent, we have the money, history and facilities. We just need a coach who can recruit as well as Red did, AND also run a program in a successful way. Including in game coaching, in season roster management and development.

Honestly, Red had everything going right for the program this past off-season. Unfortunately, better roster building and off-season conditioning only revealed his lack of high level coaching acument.

I am well aware of that. I was actually called to testify in the famous Hot Slide Congressional Hearings of 1973. I was forced to admit on the stand that I learned a valuable life lesson and that no long term harm was done.

I wasn’t so fortunate. A hot metal slide ended my burgeoning assless chaps modeling career.

But seriously, I'm not a go-to source for anything. I post stupid memes and gifs, looking for the cheap laugh.

As for the Living Legend thing, AI got it half right. I am, in fact, living.

That’s not true, you’re my go to source for telling me if a post will get me banned.

Your post is well thought out and written and really good perspective.

An alternate opinion. With recruits and the portal you need to look at the market value of the player, that's what drives the NIL spend and how we compete with the teams above.

While we had better talent according you to 12 teams it's well documented that at least 6-7 ACC teams spent more in NIL for their players than us. That means there is a disconnect between the rating agencies and timing of your post and what the actual market is.

and this isn't me disputing that we had talent and underperformed. The best talent gets the most money on the market every offseason.

There's an analytics guy on twitter who put the estimated NIL spend for each team in the tournament on twitter. If his numbers are accurate(and I think they are because he's on point with the top teams) we spent more than Gonzaga, Nova, SMU and Clemson.
We were in the same territory as Michigan State, Missouri, Georgia, Miami, and Nebraska.

Purdue, Illinois, UConn, and Kansas slightly above. Based on the estimates it backs up what we saw in the preseason recruiting rankings.

By the way the top spending teams are Kentucky, Duke, Arkansas, Michigan, Texas Tech and then it's everyone else from 7.5 to 10 million. Kentucky spent 8 million more than Duke for a 7 seed. Ridiculous. Their opponent Santa Clara spent just below 3 million.

By basing it off of purely RSCI ratings, I ran the risk of confirmation bias and avoided recency bias.

Clearly, several of our best players were unranked by RSCI coming out of high school. No doubt, some players progress better than others, and sometimes there are blown scouting reports that miss on players.

But, generally speaking, high talent out of high school succeeds at a higher rate in college ball.

I didn't want to go through every roster player by player, it is highly subjective (and this isn't my job). The ACC in general recruited much better as a conference both in high school and portal recruiting. That comes from having more money. I can't find confirmed sources for NIL and unfortunately every body has incentive to lie.

Unless we start getting publicly available contracts, we will never know.

But if we were 6-7th in NIL money spent this season, out of 18 conference teams, that actually supports my point that we can compete with everybody but Duke financially and will get our fair share of recruiting wins.
