And that's all I got to say about that!
I watched Bowling Green tonight and I watched Babers too. I was down to two candidates that I felt comfortable with, Babers and Orgeron. I feel that two of the most important considerations in this hire are head coaching experience and likelihood of some longevity. Obviously, Babers and Orgeron are two contrasting styles of coaching with different assets and different shortcomings. Hell, they're expertise is even on the different side of the ball. However, they have both been head coaches and both are likely to stick around for a while. Otherwise, for different reasons, I think both have a good chance of being successful at Syracuse.
However, tonight... maybe... was an epiphany for me. I haven’t seen them play previously, but Bowling Green was impressive tonight and Babers was very impressive. He remained cool, calm, and collected. He was articulate when interviewed at half time, and just oozed confidence and under control. He was understandably excited afterwards. I like this in a coach. Contrastingly, Orgeron is one of the screamers. I never particularly liked the screamer variety. Adazzio is one of the screamers too, as well as Casullo. All three worked with Coach P, who was the model of always under control. The upside they bring is the passion they convey to the players. The downside is... what's up with that? Anyway, I'd love it if we hired Babers. He behaved as and talked like a head coach we can all be proud of.
I have recently posted that I believe a head coach is much like an administrator, in that the primary skills needed are organizational skills, evaluative skills, and the ability to build a program. It looked to me like his sideline was well organized and disciplined. The Northern Illinois sideline looked like confusion, and at times, chaos.
But here’s the deal. We need to fish or cut bait! I am fully aware that what I have to say going forward will not be popular with some folks. We need to make a commitment in tangible terms: MONEY! The University has been playing on the cheap. Over the past ten years there was one billion dollars raised. I know this is considered an endowment. I also know an endowment can be spent in a variety of ways to add to the attractiveness of the University. I also know that under the leadership of the “wee one” we have progressively declined in academic excellence over the past decade or so, as measured by the rankings of U.S. and World News Report. I also know that we are a private university and charge one of the highest tuition rates of U.S. universities while marketing ourselves as the academic elite. And lastly I know we earn a substantial amount of money as a member institution of the ACC, that some place an annual stipend of 20 million dollars on. Therefore, I would suggest we offer a contract to Baber, or anyone we think can deliver what we say we want: a program that will challenge for the title of the ACC, and a position in the playoffs for the National Championship.
The contract should be in the neighborhood of 2-3 million dollars that includes incentives. I would see a 5 year contract that begins around 2.25 million as a base salary with incentives for six wins, 8 wins, and 10 plus wins, an additional incentive for a bowl win and/or final four appearance, and lastly, an additional incentive for a national championship. This way, we are declaring our goals in tangible terms, putting our money where our mouth is, and putting ourselves in position to accomplish what we all want. I believe my university operates more like a corporation than an institution of higher learning. If I am right, we put ourselves in a position to earn more money on the field than in the classroom. We may even make enough to augment our academic endeavors!
Next, we must upgrade the money available for the coordinators and assistant coaches. The same contract would apply; increased base salary with incentives. This way everyone profits from success and provides additional motivation. The biggest expenditure in any organization is human, i.e. labor. I don’t know what the budget for the football program is, but I do know that we need to invest in our most valuable asset; the staff! This may mean another million, more or less. So what are we talking about? Maximun of 4 million, or 20 % of our ACC share?
One additional comment is that I think we should retain Steve Gregory for special teams, since he has done a good job of improving that part of the game.
