Sorry if everybody already knew this, but I just saw that he is listed in the SU student directory.

Great news. He was not listed there as of Monday.

So he and Davis are enrolled, will be participating in spring practice and will count towards last years scholarship numbers.

I anticipate Broyld to be redshirted this season but believe Davis can earn himself minutes this spring. He might be reporting as our biggest linebacker, hopefully he picks up the mental aspect quickly.

I am looking forward to watching Ashton this spring - I want him to compete hard for a QB spot.

We need a big-time athlete at that position.

too be honest this years spring game will probably have the most "buzz" around it then we have had in years...a lot of that is because Broyld and to see what he is all about.

I hope Davis is the beast we all want him to be. However, I hope this board (not implying you by any means) has realistic expectations of the kid. He has has three knee surgeries over the last two years, not to mention the fact will not have played football in two and a half years.

This is a kid that I hope the staff brings along slowly. If healthy, he has a nice upside.

You're absolutely right.

Exactly, it's not like the knee has been game or even practice tested, the kid has the fact that he is young going for him but hopefully the knee can hang in there. I would expect him to be brought along slowly

Good reality check.
Still, it would be nice to have a big, strong MLB, which would allow Spruill (who IMO is a undersized for MLB) to move to the SLB. For comparison, Derrell Smith played at close to 250 his Sr. season, and it seemed like we were getting bullied off the ball by some of our late-season foes.

But in exchange for that size, you're putting a 3rd year starter at his 3rd position, and two more experienced players (Vaughan and Lynch) on the pine.

agree - and Hunt as well - with a year in the system under his belt we should be able to get some sense of his potential based on this spring

Smith played at 230-235. He showed up for pro day workouts at 245. He and Hogue both put on weight for predraft workouts

I love Spruill's game, but no matter how you look at it, 216 is awfully light to play MLB.

Supposedly Conley wanted all the LB's under 220 last year. I agree that's way too light.

With a new LB coach we'll hopefully see an emphasis on being 240 lb bruisers at LB.

Was Shafer OK with that prescription?

After the previous era (I won't mention names of previous players), I can understand the emphasis on speed and athleticism, but a lot of teams seemed to be running over us inside last year.

No idea but safety sized LB's isn't ideal IMO.
Doesn't it seem unusual that a coordinator would not know about the training goals set by one of his position coaches? I recall reading something about how Marrone instituted offseason conditioning goals when he arrived, with measurable numeric targets. I have to believe that players' weights are on that list.

Correct. Actually teams were running all over since we tackled pourly. LB's that don't wrap up generally bounce off RBs who are the same size. Maybe it was just a byproduct of so much inexperience.

Tackling was my biggest gripe last year. Guys weren't wrapping and gang tackling went AWOL. I can live with blown coverages but being in position and not making plays... :bang:

interesting to read how the 49ers have full contact practices all year. Sure seemed to help them lay the lumber on the saints.

It's a balance really, our outside linebackers were flat out too small last year. Vaughn is a average size safety, I don't care what his weight and height our listed at, he isn't very big at all. Davis has the athleticism and will be great with another 152-20 pounds or so. I doubt he was 200 pounds this year.

Sure but I'm not privvy to the goals. The under 220 thing could've just been coach speak knowing what they were working with or hearsay from this board. We looked much better with 2 LBs over 230 the year prior so I'd imagine we would want to get back to that.

Seriously, what choice did Conley have? All our LBs were under 220 last year.

Hard to believe he wouldn't have been perfectly happy with Doug Hogue at 6 ft 3, 232, if he had him back. But he had guys who were 215, so he said he liked what he had. With some normal S&C, Davis will be up to 225 by his junior year (not this year), and he will be better for it.

Not so fast on Broyld's redshirting. He already had a PG year, and will have this Spring to show what he can do. Maybe this is wishful thinking, but a creative OC would be looking for more wildcat in our attack plan.
