Er Assistant that is...

Especially in college, I have always felt that assistants are what make a program. Stating the obvious here, but I think in choosing the HC, great consideration has to be given as to who has the best ability to bring in the most effective staff.

A good HC needs to be first and foremost a good CEO. A people person who can see the big picture, know where he wants to go, good with the media and fans, and put the people who will succeed in place.

I have always thought Mac was that guy. I'm not sure if Mac was the greatest X's and O's guy himself, but he was a great CEO who put together a great staff who could recruit the east.

Other qualifications for HC in my mind have to be character and someone who has a genuine interest in the welfare of the kids on and off the field.

Shafer was that guy, but he just couldn't get it done on the field. Had he been given more time, maybe things would have turned around for him, but he was dealing with a brand new AD who wants to bring in his own splash hire.

Possibly, except the part of putting together a great staff. As I indicated at the time, I was shocked that he promoted Lester immediately. I would've thought that an interim tag followed by an OC search would've been the preferred route... at least from the peanut gallery. He tied his future, and that of the staff, to that decision. The other odd hire was that of Adam for the OL. Keeping it in the family and working with people that you trust is nice... but those people need to be good.

I'd hoped that it would've worked out, and a bit sad that it didn't.

Hopefully the next guy has a better run.

The OL has graded out well in a lot of the games, people love to pile on Adam on as a bad hire. Kids really took him and he was picking up steam with recruiting.
HCSS had faith in Lester and his system, it might have worked out given another year or Moe Neal ;)

I agree with all of this.

Looking out for his coaching buddies and the idea of rekindling their WMU/NIU days, contributed to his downfall.
