Umm… starting with our first game vs. Charlotte at 2:30, November 25, my birthday, (it’s great getting older but enjoy being younger while you can!), not counting the results and play from our games with Lehigh, Bonaventure and Elon, will tell us a great deal about this year’s team. I am usually not this tentative about the beginning of the season – probably due to the fact that since 1962 when I was a walk - on freshman quarterback and ever since then there seemed to be at least one or two SU players who were very good or very, very good and about to be great like Dave Bing. I was a spotter for the official scorer at all the games in Manley and out of the gate we began to get better and better. (By the way, everything you’ve heard about the atmosphere and game experience in Manley is true - only better).

I opened cto’s post about this early tournament and with one eye shut, peeked at the teams that will be sunning themselves in the Bahamas. Let’s see, among the teams involved aside from us, only Charlotte and Washington are un-talked about pre-season. Otherwise according to the various preseason rankings - AP, USA Today Coaches, CBS Sports, etc. – Gonzaga is either #9 or #11, UConn is #20 or #24, Texas A & M also #24, and Michigan #25. Texas has votes.

So, Charlotte seems to be a good first game opponent. Eight teams, five with preseason ink and position. You may think I’m chicken, a worrier, or that I have no optimism about this year’s edition of SU basketball but only part of that is true. I have no feathers so guess which one I’m on. BUT, just maybe I’m way out of line and we are going to be pleasantly surprised about the outcome – threes from all over getting only net, good ball handling, passing, many assists from our appointed point guard and others and a not a lick of turnovers from Richardson, Howard, Gbinije, Cooney, Joseph, whatever the combination. Beating the Zags would be like delicious, hot gravy on the turkey and mashed potatoes. And, maybe we’re going to be able to enjoy a nice slice of tasty, Thanksgiving dessert pie from this team even if we don’t win the whole thing! Whipped or ice cream toppings if we do! Hope so. Go SU!!!!

As someone who experienced Manley during my 4 years on the hill from 1975-79 I totally concur with you about the atmosphere. Back then the students made up a larger portion of attendees and boy were we rowdy. I think students do a great job now too but since we made up a larger portion of the attendance it just seemed a lot crazier. Then again life in general was crazier back then!!

Honestly, I don't think the students do such a great job now. Most of the time they don't show up. Even with our 2012 team that only lost ONE game all season, I recall that the students' attendance was poor. The last time I remember that the students attended and were fun/crazy was for our 2010 team. Others may disagree or remember differently. Hopefully, this year will be better.

I'm sorry, normally I don't complain. It's just aggravating to look over at the student section and see it so empty. I have a friend who attended SU during the Manley years and she said it was unbelievably cray cray.

Back to the post subject: what I love about Atlantis is that we have three games, bada bing, bada boom. It is such great exposure and opportunity for us. Won't be a walk in the park, though. Gonzaga is the only one that scares me and I will know better just how scared to be after Friday's game. Go SU! And Happy Birthday to you!

That's what I love about those tournaments also - guaranteed to have three days in a row of Syracuse basketball!

The students and alumni basically are terrible. Id bet if we lose a couple games attendance will be sparce. Maybe then we can start a #fireboeheim thread.

Manley was much easier to pack, obviously, so I'd bet that's what contributed to the atmosphere. I wasn't around then, so I can't speak to the dedication of the student fans but I suspect we have more kids show up to games on average now than we did at Manley, simply because there is more space. The students show up in big numbers for the big games; always have, always will. But it's tough to get the ones who didn't grow up as Syracuse fans to show up to relatively boring games against low-major teams. I'd like for the student section to be more organized than it is, but turnout has been fine in my eyes.

This is why college hoops rules over college football. Every team come march has a chance to win a national championship as opposed to 100 teams in college football who at 0-0 have no chance.

Maybe 110.

Cool tee, Jeff. Are you the dashing rogue who came up with that spelling, by any chance?
Well, I am a scruffy looking nerf herder. Or so I like to believe.
