I blame liberals. Not sure how many ways to say this but he's a try. People like to be affiliated with winners. They think it is a reflection of who they are. SU hoops known as winners. Odds are, you go to a game and you will see your team win. Football, not so much. Brand affiliation relies on having a product that is a winner that people want to be associated with. While diehard fans don't stop going to games, even they get discouraged with e.g. what we say in the first decade of this century in football.
There's a couple generations of kids out there now who don't know what's it like to lose. Too many little league and soccer games or whatever where everybody wins and nobody loses.
people dont know what it's like to root for a team when it's deep in the abyss, what its like to watch loss after loss. have never shook their fist at the field and yelled to no one in general '-U, u basterds, just wait till next year!!!!'
It's too bad, because it makes the victory all the more enjoyable.
Its when the blood, sweat and tears of the player...are equaled by the time, money, depressions and hangovers of the fan...that sports symmetry is achieved.
And then, and only then...can one appreciate victory.
