Axe: Should Syracuse extend Fran Brown’s contract?

Extend him with the phat buyout so at least we can get the phat cash if he left. He isn’t Dino, Dino completely lost his fire after he got extended, Fran would sooner light himself on fire than lose his fire
Think Dino began to “lose his fire” with the disappointment of the 2019 season when he felt distractions and a sense of some team leaders being self satisfied were a major detriment to performance. Then, with Covid, he was unable to close the deal with major recruiting targets partially because the relationships couldn’t be maintained with limited contact. Finally the NIL world emerged and Syracuse was woefully unprepared to compete and couldn’t attract retain a competitive talent base.

Fran Brown is to Syracuse what Jurgen Klopp was to Liverpool. I fully expect the same trajectory as their mentalities are REMARKABLY similar... the fire and passion for the team and deep rooted care for the players to succeed in all facets... as are the club/team similar (historic names that fell behind the financial arms race). Buy in or get out, but if you buy in I've got your back forever. No mercenary players nor coaches that delete a players number as soon as said coach deems players value to them personally is expended.

As such I expect Fran to give us a solid, sustainable build and win everything possible in a decades time. Next year will be a grind but the year after and beyond sky is the limit. I don't expect him to leave Syracuse until Kirby hangs them up at UGA and he takes over there. Whomever takes the reigns after Fran will find a much better situation than was here when he arrived. We are EXTREMELY lucky to have had Fran seek out our coaching job as men of his mold are truly a rare commodity.

The man said he's here for 10 years. Our fan base needs to get over this phycology that he is going to leave us. Because after the 10 years is done, we wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as we may have due to self inflicted anxiety.
Where did he say this? Not saying you're wrong, but I don't remember this.

I believe that is the Accountable in DART. I think he walks the walk of the talk.

I want to say lifetime contract right now but I threw away the orange sunglasses lol
He needs another solid year of 7 or more wins, then talk extension BUT the big boys can literally pay anything we put in the buyout

I disagree that an extension for Fran should be measured in wins and losses, though a key indicator. Obviously gun shy how we handled Dino’s contract, extending off one good year but I don’t think it’s a direct correlation to Fran’s situation. He’s a North East guy, whose mended relationships with recruiting and the local community as a whole, while also reaching out to alumni and bringing them back. He’s changed perception and brought a sense of pride back to the program in a very short time. He understands what it takes to thrive in our part of the country.

There’s a story from last year (I’ll probably get some of the details wrong) where Fran went to an event and saw some kid standing by himself. Fran went over to that kid, put an arm around him and said you’re gonna kick it with me. That’s the guy we need for this program.

Sure, if a factory comes knocking, there’s nothing we can do but I want to hit them in their pockets and make them pay for it. Plus, an extension is more symbolic than anything. We support him, we want him here, we’re behind him, there’s stability.

I would extend Fran now and if it blows up like Dino's extension well we are right back where we have been for the last 20-25 years. The time to do it is now, IMO. It's a gamble but probably the only way we wind up keeping him for 7-8 years if he has decent success. If he goes say 7-5 this year and then 11-1 or 10-2 next year, I can't see him staying but I guess you never know. Like I said, the downside is maybe an off year this year but I think his floor given a reasonable schedule will always be acceptable at Syracuse. You are never going to find a better recruiter than Fran Brown here. I just will never believe it. He will get talent and he will also most likely have to tweak his staff as the years go by as well. Even if he wins 4-5 games this year with this schedule I would be fine with him having another 5 years after this year. I don't think anyone has higher expectations for Syracuse than HCFB which means a lot. I would go all in

I'm not saying you're wrong, but from all accounts we shouldn't blame COVID for Dino's recruiting failures.

Very surprised when I Googled Kirby's age and found out he's only 49. Don't see him going anywhere anytime soon.

From the outside this doesn’t seem like your typical relationship between a Head Football Coach and AD and School Administration. As Coach Brown has said before as long as everyone holds up their end of the deal, we are good. I think Fran has earned the trust of all the stakeholders and right now the main goal is to keep up the communication of needs for the football program and everyone holding up their side to deliver. Even the Chancellor has said during the ribbon cutting of the new facility that we are committed to being a top 25 perennial football program. I do think if someone isn’t keeping up their side of the deal and doesn’t change their attitude, I think we will see it coming because Fran will probably not be shy in letting the media know that. I think we see the players era of college sports as an opportunity to raise the prestige level of the brand.

Blame completely, no. But it was certainly a factor. There was a lot of momentum with the 2020 and 2021 classes coming off the ten win season. Very little came to fruition. In terms of recruiting rankings, I believe Enrique Cruz was the only four star Dino signed in those two classes combined. On the other hand there are a number of players rated as mid to low three stars in those classes that went on to prominent roles, so I suppose we have to credit the previous staff with identifying and developing some talent,

Where did he say this? Not saying you're wrong, but I don't remember this.
It was really early on, I want to say it was possibly the first press conference right after he was hired. It's on video. He was talking about how he had a ten year plan and will leave coaching when his daughter becomes a teenager. He said "I'm from Camden y'all I'm good" referring to not wanting to leave for anywhere else.

Just another fan's opinion:

Fran has his family here, they are young enough to want to stay in an area for a while. SU has a storied program but needs a rebuilding. Fran can do the job. He's young enough to stay a while and still love to a factory school after his kids graduate. Further, if he succeeds at SU, he will always be wanted.

Fran is a guy who plays the long game. He knows what has to be done to win games and get the most out of players while knowing he has to walk the walk, talk is cheap unless it is backed up with evidence.

SU will pay him well, not top dollar, but well. SU will give him room to run the program as it needs to be run. SU won't allow money guys to interfere, though will allow exposure.

The City of Syracuse loves him. Players love him. Assistant coaches love him (my guess, no inside knowledge). He is not leaving for just a paycheck. He will only go to a better all-around job, not just a paycheck. I think he is more likely to hold out for a contender, which if he is successful at SU, may be a more limited pool of options as SU is likely to contend at least periodically under Fran. A lateral move is probably limited to near where his kids attend college, otherwise what's the purpose after rebuilding a storied program.

I think that as long as SU treats Fran well, Fran stays. He has been at the lateral schools and factories. He knows what awaits him at a factory and he can achieve that at SU, why take the other pressure when he can do well here. At that point, it becomes money, prestige, and proving something to himself, all of which he can mostly attain at SU. This isn't Rutgers or UConn.

Should SU extend Fran, probably they should look at his deal if he wins 7 games this fall. It will take a lot of skill with this schedule. Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

“Coach Lasso, Syracuse fans are wondering if they should extend Fran Brown now. Your thoughts?”

Excuse Me Wow GIF by Apple TV+

“Pffft….They’re wondering?! Are you bloody kidding?!! And they say I don’t know football?!”

;)

How much money do you need? As long as he is making a good salary and striving to accomplish his goal, Fran isn’t leaving Syracuse.

Fran has made it clear that he loves what he is doing @SU. The short of it is he wants to recruit better, faster players, win games and build this institution into a winner competing for the national championship every year.

That 10 - win season last year was a good start, but Fran wants his own recruiting and players from the portal to be in competition for the best team not a team with any leftovers.

He has also mentioned that he loves Syracuse. He loves the people and the way people have reacted to his coaching acumen. He gets out into the community to help people in need. People have reacted positively to him and Syracuse players who are also out in the community.

Fran Brown, Jr. just signed to play football for his father. He did well as a redshirt freshman at St. Francis University in 7 games he had 33 Tackles, 2 TFL, 1 Sack and a FR. He has three years to play. I don’t see HCFB going anywhere until his son has exhausted his playing time. I don’t see Fran Brown leaving Syracuse at all if he accomplishes his goal or gets close to it. And, I don’t think he will be attracted to the buyout money from “The Big Schools” if he is offered. Fran is Syracuse Football and will be the HC as long as he wants it if he continues to be successful.

Babers salary: 2018 – $ 2,401, 206

2019 - $ 2,268, 825

2020 - $ 3,208,683

2021 - $ 3,504,958

2022 - $ 3,983,295

2023 - $ 4,063,138

Fran Brown : 2024 - ?

If Fran Brown does well, perhaps not the same this year as 2024 - 5 but close, and then continues to win and bowl, finally ascending to the national playoffs, I say he’s worth an ascending salary starting at $ 5,000,000 extended for 10 years @ $1,000,000 a year or a $120,000,000 contract for ten years with a buyout of $100,000,000. Let’s see if the Big Boys want to cover that. If Fran chooses to resign before the end of 2008 the buyout is $5,000,000.

You make a lot of good points, one other factor he said at that press conference 10 years and retire to spend time with his daughter and family.
That fits his DART , faith and family is the main focus of his life, and then football.

I honestly don't believe this is true. If a big program comes in for him, I think he'll be gone. His personality is ambition. I can't elaborate too much, but this isn't just my opinion.

Just enjoy the ride while it's happening and hopefully we get 3-4 more seasons.

Can we please stop using Dino’s name in any and all Fran Brown posts? He was a scratch off ticket that we somehow won 100 bucks on and were so excited we bought 50 more tickets with the 100 and each of them were losers. Fran is a 100 million dollar inheritance from a long lost relative and we can sit back and swim in coins like Scrooge mcduck and enjoy the view.

I need to quit AM gummies

Agree. And your no quitter.

Extend Fran now! He has changed the game and is committed to Syracuse success and the community. Lock him up long term. Please.
