Babers to Arizona OC/QB Coach

He was better than Shafer and Robinson. That’s as much as I will give him
Shafer beat him though so there's a debate to be had there. Shafer better DC than Babers is HC? Shafer was playing with 4th string QBs, not benching future NY Giants. Babers had bigger wins but worse losses. That MD disaster is worse than anything Shafer did.

there is zero debate. Dino Babers was a better HC at Syracuse than Scott Shafer. It isn't even close.

I’m kinda shocked we’re still doing this 18 months later.

He definitely elevated the program. People don’t complain about Marrone (other than the exit) and he went to two pinstripe bowls… people wanted Dino fired in 2022 for making the exact same bowl game with the exact same record.

That’s because both he (and Marrone before him on a bigger scale) raises the bar for expectations from what they inherited.
You must be new here. We do this every June.

Meh. One was consistenly sub-average. The other benched a future NFL player. Babers couldn't beat MTSU and the Shafer cigar put this board into meltdown. I won't argue about Shafer, what I will do is point out what a complete screw up Devito was by Babers. Illinois didn't mess it up and neither did the Giants. Babers benched an NFL QB. Imagine if Marrone had benched Nassib. Fact Babers never won with his own players...anywhere. He rode the coattails of the guys before him, turned records around quickly and couldn't recruit/develop his own guys.

I don't think you compare him to Marrone as much as Shafer. Shafer had reversed Marrone's progress and had us heading back toward GRob. Babers stopped that bleeding but never got us as far we thought he could.

If we're talking hypotheticals, I think Marrone's upside was higher than where Babers ended up getting us, but we don't know how he would've faired in the NIL/portal era, and his ceiling was much lower than Fran's.
BS. When did GRob recruit a Dungey? Make a bowl? Lester's offense was turning around. Grob's offense was pile of horse dung. You can not like Shafer, etc but the two weren't even close and it's pretty asinine to make that comparison.

Yeah I am not here to argue that Babers was some great coach lol he played devito correctly during 2018 and lost everything when he did nothing for the OL and couldn't find a Sean Lewis replacement.

The lack of OL help/recruiting killed Devito here. He never had a chance. 2018 he did and he played pretty well. It's no surprise that was a very good OL.

Neither SS or DB were good HC here - but DB was better

the funny thing about SS and DB's hirings -- both made total sense to me at the time. Shafer as a DC was awesome. Babers at BG had some of the coolest offense I had seen

Many problems for both once they got the keys... so thank goodness for Fran Brown

Only 3 seasons under Dino had an SOS higher than any of Shafers and his SOS progressively got worse as the ACC continued a steady fall in overall strength. It can easily be argued Shafer had the toughest job just based on average SOS. Marrones SOS were laughable … Shafer had the unenviable task of literally leading us into the ACC when we had a legit FSU and Clemson on our schedule. This is a key ingredient in how successful a coach can be. For reference this seasons SOS under Fran would have been Dino’s 4th best but still below any of Shafers.

I didn't say he was Grob. I said we were moving back in that direction. I don't know that we would have fallen that far again and am glad we didn't have to find out. Regardless, that wasn't the main point of my comment. I think you're smart enough to know that.

Fwiw, I liked Shafer. I wanted him to succeed. I liked his style of defense and I liked his fire.

As bad as Grob was, he recruited Delone Carter, Doug Hogue, Ryan Nassib, Averin Collier (a top 250 recruit at the time), Marcus Sales, and Chandler Jones. He was able to attract gems here and there but couldn't put a complete team together or coach it.

It's time to close this thread. We need to bury SU football history from the last couple of years of Pasqualoni to the first year of Brown. It makes my head hurt to think about those years.

I don't wanna bury it all. Marrone brought some hope and 2018 was a lot of fun.

So my entire fandom up until this year?

Thanks!

But then he left for his REAL dream job.
More than one thing can be simultaneously true. People can be mad that/how he left but can also appreciate he brought us back from the abyss. If he was bad, nobody would've been disappointed he left.

Fran seems to be the best of all worlds. I hope this is a ride we get to enjoy for a while, like the prolonged success we had through my preteen years and into my 20's. It could be the perfect timing to stoke the fanhood flame in my kids.

That’s crazy. Marrone with the first Pinstripe Bowl was fun. Heck even the game in Happy Valley where we lost but had that great goal line stand and played respectable. Dino had some great games beating Clemson and a 10-2 season. Shafer all I really remember is ISIS Dabo and his d against GT oh and the cigar

A Coach-work (ex)Orange. :p

Why do so many people feel the need to police conversation. It’s June. People who are diehard fans of this program are chatting about a former head coach. It’s fine. That’s what fans do. Hell, there’s a kazillion podcasts where all they do is relitigate sports stuff from years ago. It’s fine!
