Badger fan here...

Agreed or we will just gun threes like we did agains UNCA in the first half?
Wisconsin makes defending the three a point of emphasis . . . which means that, if they play to their tendency, they ironically will be forcing SU to play to its strength!

I wonder how Boeheim will choose to deplore the press, and if he'll use this as a tactic to speed up the game and force more turnovers. I'd like to hear your opinion on what happens when teams press Wisconsin.

It's going to be a great chess match. Obviously I think our guys come out on top.

Another badger fan here -- I had to chuckle at "deploring" the press -- I'm not that fond of it, but I don't hate it :).

Not that many teams have tried to press UW. The guards -- Jordan Taylor in particular -- are extremely solid with the ball and just don't turn it over much. I think a press would be a pretty good idea to get UW to use 10 seconds of the clock just to get into rhythm in the half-court set, though, because we need just about all of the shot clock to find a shot in the first place. UW is unlikely to make you pay with a easy-deuce press breakage, so it's a low-risk strategy. Many teams do this sort of low-pressure press strategy against us -- it doesn't lead to turnovers or quickening the pace, but it generally makes our offense less effective.

Interested in how you'll attack the zone? Who will be catching and shooting inside the arc?

I'm just curious, have you guys seen any zones this year?? If so can you tell me who?

Nobody like Syr. Most of the B1G teams are primarily man. Northwestern plays a funky 1-3-1 quite a bit, but they're nowhere near athletic. Minnesota & Tubby mix it up a bit, and they are a fairly athletic team, but still play mostly man. Even Michy and Beilien is a mostly man team these days. When teams have thrown a zone vs. UW, UW has generally been more effective, but those zones were not Syr. Vandy threw one at us late in the game on Sat & we were terrible against it -- that was an anomaly, but still disconcerting since Vandy is no Syr either. Bo will figure something out by Thurs., but planning for it and facing it are 2 different things.

We played Wisconsin in November of 1999 and won 68-49. I believe it was the Black College Coaches Tournament or something.

We started 19-0 that year. Wisconsin reached the Final Four.

The one thing I'm concerned about is that what Wisconsin considers defense is actually not defense, and just on court hack and smackery, and the refs will buy into it.

Likely Ryan Evans -- he is our best and most often mid-range shooter. I have a love-hate regard for RE -- he is probably our lowest BB IQ player, taking too many dumb shots for my taste, but he also makes a fair percentage of those. When he catches the ball, it's a pretty good bet he's going to shoot it or turn it over. But he's really key in this game.

Battle of the Duanys?

Yeah, the UNCA game is still in the back of my mind - hopefully we don't go out there and just settle for shots. We're notorious slow starts, and if they're hitting early it could be an uphill battle for us. That being said, with their scouting report being what it is I think we'll do a good job challenging shots and I think our guys seemed more focus after that UNCA debacle.

This is patently false. Sure they're physical, but not clutch-and-grab. They do very little of the reaching and handsy-type of defense that tries to get turnovers. The entire philosophy is predicated on playing defense by moving your feet -- the physicality is generally below the waist.

Crap I forgot about that one on a hot day in late August! I am fitting the model, remember everything from the 70's and forget everything from 10 min ago.
Ooowww... My mother is like that. She's in a memory unit now...

Duany Duany played, but Q was redshirting I believe.

Kueth will always be the best Duany.

_________

They do like to take charges - maybe Fab is at practice this week to prep us in that regard. :)

On a related note, anyone hear the head of officials on CBS talking about making those calls, especially the 50/50 ones, blocking going forward? Or at least making it a point of discussion with the rules committee? I really hope they push it - I hate the slide under crap.

90% should be blocking calls, with 5% charges and 5% travels.

Do you think you matchup well with Syracuse?
I do actually, because It appears as if your strengths (transition, forcing turnovers) are the things that we don't allow/don't do.

With all due respect, that is BS. Sure, Bo may preach that—but in reality, his teams clutch AND grab constantly. Jordan Taylor has become the king of subtly having his hands all over the player he's defending. Then, more often than not, that player either gets frustrated or just tries to give Taylor a little in return, and Taylor falls backwards, arms flailing like he was just hit by a sedan.
I suppose one could say, "hey hats off to them, that's just smart basketball." But I say that's ugly basketball and goes directly against the spirit of the game.

(BTW, this comes from someone who's lived in big10 country his whole life and has had to suffer through 3+ decades of big10 ugliness)

Love this thread, badgerfan. I'll throw my two cents in, with the caveat that some of our more knowledgeable Orange fanse may disagree in places:

1. The Zone "allows" threes, but only allows them from deep, so if your shooters are comfortable from deep then you're in the game. This was more the case with Fab in place, so we'll see if JB pushes his defenders out to make your shots uncomfortable. But don't think you're going to get open threes from the wing because you'll probably be trapped and embarrassed.

2. Don't make lazy passes around the perimeter because it's a waste of time and they sometimes get stolen. If you make quick passes, you can find an open shot, but Cuse players close quickly (if they're on their game), so expect to have a very long hand (or four) in your face most of the night.

3. Don't be fooled by that supposed "bad rebounding" lable analysts have hung on the Orange. We contest most interior shots, which forces second- and third-chance opportunities, but they, too, are contested. You may get a lot of offensive rebounds, but you may only get two points per 2 or 3 chances. Orange players can make that back with one steal.

4. "Bad Scoop" turns the ball over and makes us scratch our heads. "Good Scoop" is a savvy senior and the heart of the team. P.S.: he can also cash in threes in clutch situations and has no fear driving to the hoop.

5. "Bad Kris" throws the ball away or fails to catch it. "Good Kris" drives the lane and draws fouls with regularity. "Great Kris" does all of the above and sinks threes.

6. The depth of the Orange means you probably can't foul anyone out and your bench players will be matched against starter talent. In blowout games, the Cuse had to sub walk-ons because the second five had been doing the blowing out!

7. The beauty of Cuse basketball is that transition game, but we'll probably not get to see it. If the Badgers do see it, they'll be looking at taillights the whole game. The Orange have laid some mean runs on teams this year. In the end, though, I expect this to be a grinding game and, fortunately for us, we've been in a few this year and survived, thanks to senior leadership.

Hope this helps. Thanks for your input, badgerfan.-VBOF

P.P.S.: Oops, forgot to mention Dion and Southerland and Triche. . . but you'll find out all about them on Thursday.

How did Iowa beat you guys twice. What did they do that works/worked so well?

Not too many teams have pressed us but I don't recall it being a problem. I have a lot of faith in Taylor bring up the ball in any situation.

And someone else asked if we've seen a zone this year. Northwestern in the only school we played that runs a zone(1-3-1) most of the time. We didn't have a problem with them, But they aren't very good at what they do...

Thanks for the rundown, should be a great one!

The first game we decided not to play defense, and went, like 3-28 from 3. The second game, Matt Gatens just could not miss from three even with a hand in his face, just one of those games I guess.
