So Saturday is the annual game where a couple of old friends and I rent a room in Syracuse for the weekend and go to a game. Usually we do the Crowne Plaza but this year my friend got comped a room in Carrier Circle so that's where we will be staying. I'm fixing to get out of work early Friday and am driving out from Rochester. I'll probably have an hour or two to kill before their flights get in so I was thinking of getting an early start. I really don't know that side of town too well, when I lived there I was either downtown or in Liverpool and that was 20 plus years ago. I see the Thompson Road Tavern is right there. Bull and Bear road house isn't far and neither is Gilligans or Chadwick's. Anyone have a suggestion on which is the best to kill some time?

Just looking for a cool Friday afternoon place to put a few down, maybe get some wings.

(To those who would suggest that I just drive out later to meet my friends...Well, that's not how I operate)

Ate at the Bull and Bear Roadhouse when we were in town this past weekend. Decent beer selection, decent food (although the wings were mediocre, IMO).

Word of warning - if you are taken to a table near another table of 40-something women who have been drinking for some time while celebrating a birthday, head for the hills! :D

My office is in that area, but I don’t go to or know the bars in the area. I do know that there are a few hotels and/or restaurants with decent bars, including the Double Tree Hotel, Joey’s restaurant (downstairs), Grimaldi’s, Ruby Tuesday, the Hilton Garden Inn and Maybe some of the other many hotels.

Full disclosure: not a drinker. But I will weigh in anyway...

Golden Spike is maybe 5 minutes away. On the main drag in near by East Syracuse. A classic neighborhood bar with excellent food. They have TVs and you can watch the PGA event, a Yankees exhibition game; whatever is on will be available. Go here if you want a burger or sandwich.

Shifty‘s is on Burnet, near Teall. It is maybe a 10 minute drive. Another classic neighborhood bar where I suspect you will feel at home. Go here if you want wings.

Thompson Rd Tavern if you are in a real dive bar mood. You can easily kill an hour there. I'm also going to mention the casino they built 10 or 15 minutes away (name escapes me). They have sports betting amd all the casino games. I was there once for a short while and it looked good.

It is just outside Bridgeport on Route 31. It is called Point Place and is run by the Turning Stone people. Really nice setup for watching sports and the food is supposed to be good. Probably a 15 minute drive.

Thanks for the tip. I do dig a decent dive bar.

I support both of these...food and vibe wise, they're basically the same bar. Good places, maybe a little regular-ish.

People seem to like the Doubletree hotel bar that someone else mentioned. Me, I've never been, because why would I go to the Doubletree hotel bar? But for someone staying in the area, sounds like a popular choice with a lot of seating and better than average food.

I used to work at BNY Mellon, right in between Carrier Circle and Bull and Bear. Bull and Bear was the go-to happy hour spot and it’s probably the most convenient to get to from the Circle. Typical bar; good number of TVs, food is good, beer selection good.

As mentioned, Shifty’s has the best wings in that area. A little sketchy, but good wings are good wings.

Doubletree’s bar provides a cool atmosphere (renovated like 3 or 4 years ago) but you’re obviously going to pay a premium. Ruby Tuesday’s is convenient to get to, tucked near/behind the hotels. It’s, well, Ruby Tuesday’s.

I love Chadwick's. Spend many football Sundays there. They have about a dozen or so craft beer taps and usually have a good deal of happy hour specials. Solid bar food as well.

Hah. Bet we used to be coworkers.

After your night of drinking, get up and head over to the nearby Rise N Shine Diner for breakfast. The food is amazing as well as the portion sizes. It's small, and the wait can be seriously long at times, however, I'm pretty sure you can call ahead and reserve a time vs. just showing up, which will help. The wait is worth it...the size and variety of the pancakes is out of this world.

try Fast Eddie's, 3898 New Court Ave., in the Lyncourt area. 5 mins. from Carrier Circle.

Great wings and friendly bartenders.

lol I love that last part. We operate the same way brotha!

Shifty's is still there? Jesus.

I've gone for a couple basketball games there. Not really a game day atmosphere I was looking for.

Plus side I've been going to Orange Crate up on the hill. Love it there.

Also love the Crate, usually one of my pregame stops. It helps lessen the sting of no more Chuck's. Yeah Chucks was a dump but great for getting you pumped up on gameday (also caught the last two FF games there, it was racus)
