There’s so much emphasis on home runs these days I decided to keep track this season of how my Mets scored each run and compare that to the opposition. What I’m recording is the specific act that allowed the run the score. If a guy hit a triple and scored on a balk, the thing that scored the run was the balk, even though the triple was obviously a big part of it. It would be a much more complicated thing to keep track of if I recorded everything that contributed to the run – and that would tip the scales even more away from the home run. I'm an advocate of "playing the whole game " and taking advantage of every means of scoring rather than waiting for someone to hit a home run, which has been the trend. I'll post this after each series and we can watch the numbers take shape as the season progresses.
