There’s so much emphasis on home runs these days I decided to keep track this season of how my Mets scored each run and compare that to the opposition. What I’m recording is the specific act that allowed the run the score. If a guy hit a triple and scored on a balk, the thing that scored the run was the balk, even though the triple was obviously a big part of it. It would be a much more complicated thing to keep track of if I recorded everything that contributed to the run – and that would tip the scales even more away from the home run. I'm an advocate of "playing the whole game " and taking advantage of every means of scoring rather than waiting for someone to hit a home run, which has been the trend. I'll post this after each series and we can watch the numbers take shape as the season progresses.

In fact, they scored 3 times on outs. The Mets on the other had scored as many runs off homers, 4, but only 9 other runs, (31% form home runs).

There wasn't much scoring in this series, (it was essentially 4 games due to the 18 inning game on Saturday) but the Mets scored 2 of their 6 runs on home runs, 33%. the brewers scored 5 of their ten runs on homers (50%). Neither team gave up a lot of hits or walks so hitting a mistake over the fence became more important than it even usually is.

The Mets are increasingly dependent on the home run, something that was not true early in the season when they were scoring runs. In this series they scored only 6 runs, four of them off home runs, (67%). The marlins also scored 4 runs off homers but they scored 9 other runs and used them to sweep the series. (4/13 = 31%).

The Mets bats came alive in this series as they scored 13 runs off homers, as many as the nationals scored at all. But the Amazin's scored 10 other runs as well, 4 each on singles and doubles and two on sac files. But 57% of their out-put came from the long ball compared to 38% for the Nats.

The Mets continue to score runs but their erratic pitching is holding them back. One trend I don't like is that, after starting the season with a balanced attack, they are reverting to depending on home runs to score: they are scoring now because they are getting them but what if the power slackens off? they still need to score in other ways. They out-scored the Tigers in this series 17-16 but 14 of the 17 Met runs were the result of home runs and only 6 of the Tiger's runs were. And many of the Met homers were coming from unlikely sources like Adeiny Hechavarría, (31HR in 826 major league games). If the Mets were producing runs in as many ways as the Tigers did, (singles, doubles, sacrifice flies), they would have swept the series.

The Mets actually competed well in this series, being out-scored by the clear best team in the league only 20-23 in their place. But baseball is not about margin of victory and they lost 3 of 4 games due to poor work by the bullpen, which gave up 15 runs. in 4 games. The Met's increasing dependence on the home run continued: 14 of their 20 runs were scored on long balls, (70%), whereas the Dodgers scored 10 of 23 runs that way, (43%).
