Basketball program needs a fresh set of eyes

How long has he had a bigger role in recruiting? 1 year?

You're right, we should pat him on the back and say good job, take your time, you'll figure it out. Learn as you go, maybe play your highlights at the recruits house so he can high five you too.

You think there was a contract drawn up re: Hopkins/JB/Admins? I sure hope not.

Hop is the next HC. Syverud officially announced it last summer. The 18/19 season unless JB decides himself to retire a year earlier.

Well the majority of the team is with hop and autry as the 2 lead recruiters. So what's your point?

Nothing is set in stone without writing. We'll see. Syverud I'm sure could be controlled/pacified when push comes to shove.

Syverud isn't like that.

In theory yes but he can be controlled. It happens every year everywhere. There are more important players at play and Syverud is just a pawn.

Hopkins' trial run last season can't be used to judge anything. There is no way he was going to mix things up in the middle of a season AND make his boss look bad in the process.

A few years ago, Boeheim himself told Donna Ditota that he's "only 80% of what I used to be" as a coach. Not sure what to make of that. He did throw a jacket that time in Cameron, when way back when he would have heaved a metal chair...

Not advocating that any gentlemen's agreement between Syverud/Boeheim/Hopkins be altered just because this year's post season tournament might have one less letter in it.

But for those who feel Hopkins isn't quite ready yet, I'm wondering what could possibly take place in the next year that will make him any more fit to take over than he is now.

Hop is ready. JB just isn't ready to retire.

Just sad to see him go out on a down note.

My problem is that JB sticks to his 7 man rotation no matter the talent level. Plus will not press until it is too late in the game. He is and will always be in HIS own world of coaching. No changes to D and no changes to the lineup. I know SU got the FF last year but who really had any confidence that they would make the championship game? I am not a JB basher but, I am also not a fan of his style, personality or ability to change with the players skill levels. I feel that SU basketball will live on through his past achievements which, if you are not wearing orange color glasses, is really not that impressive. 40+ years, bunch of seasonal wins - but only 4 FF's and one championship.

5 Final Fours.

I'm just bummed out that I wasted money to go see this team at UNC in January. Im really not looking forward to my wife's gloating (UNC alum).

The D has had nothing to do with the fact we have had a player drafted in the first round of the NBA draft the last 4 years.

The zone has m2m principles. We aren't recruiting good enough elite prospects. We go a tier below and they are leaving early like the top 10 guys.

Can you explain this to me?

I am no gmac fan. not anti gmac either. But it is really a reach to blame gmac. Not Autry. Not Hopkins. But gmac. he has been on the road less than any coach on staff. He missed out on a guy that said yes to us and got flipped by Kentucky. Would have happened to anyone on our staff that was recruiting Green.

Honestly, it's JB who has lost his touch as as recruiter. He doesn't have the energy (naturally) he once had. He doesn't get out nearly as much as he once did. He's lost his edge. I'm sure he'd be the first to admit that. Francis has brought up this topic many times on his podcast.

Yet the staff seemed to have done a good job of putting together a good team this year through some good recruiting. The pieces seemed to be in place. But they overlooked the lack of a quality point guard. So vital.

At this stage, just don't see how they rectify that.

Of course there is. Are you serious. And from what I understand, it's ironclad. Hopkins is our next coach. We would be paying a million dollars a year for him to coach elsewhere.

Lol. We'll see. Highly doubt "ironclad."

SU hoops is the biggest cash cow in college hoops because of all the home games we play. We could afford to pay Hopkins 1 million a year to go away if Wildhack wanted to.

Regarding football program that's going on fifteen years out of the top 25:

"We need a HC with HC experience!!!!"

Regarding basketball program that's top 10 all time:

"Hopkins will do fine."

But Hopkins "gets it", so all is good.
