BC Part II Post Game

Its not about fighting over the screen.. Its about why did JJ leave the guy so that he had a screen to fight over?

if JJ goes over the screen he has any even easier 3 pt shot given where the ball was inbounded. There is no going over the screen on this. going under forced a longer shot. if he tries to go over the guy gets all the way to the top of the Key. Now maybe you dont play lampkin and try to get a quicker quy so he actually is within 20ft of the ball so a switch could happen.

4 massive problems by Red before the ball is even thrown in bounds:

JJ is already out of position.
Eddie is out of position.
Eddie shouldn't be in the game period.
Your best wing defender (Taylor) isn't even in the game.

Great screen shot.

Couldn't watch the game and haven't read full thread but the biggest thing I don't understand is JJ's positioning to start this inbounds.

He is positioned to prevent an easy pass along the arc in front of the BC bench ONLY.
You trust your teammates to follow their man and defend that corner.

Why wouldn't he be almost parallel to the inbounder with his hands up, cutting off the most space at the top of the arc, and angled to prevent a however unlikely cross court pass.
They needed a three...

Plus, he'd be in position to seal/follow the inbounder after whatever pass and move he did make.

Kind of late for the players to figure out who has who while Eddie is in a one man zone guarding against a 2 point shot in a 3 point game with a second or so left. Who is guarding #32 and is anyone even guarding the inbounder #5? Are Jyare and JJ double teaming the guy running in front of Jyare and towards JJ? Was it the inbounder #5 on BC who made the shot? No one was guarding him at all. If this was the scene with like 1 some second left in regulation, then 2 BC players(#5 & #32) were going to be alone to get a clean 3 point shot. Amazing that #5 got to where he was and make the shot in 1.2 seconds or so. Uggh

Yup, JJ was clearly defending that side of the 3 point line. I actually don’t have much of a problem with that. It’s the closest/easiest pass to make. Plus, if you watch the replay, he actually slowed down Hand from getting over there who had a step or two on Jyare who was behind Hand chasing him. That was probably their first option.

For me, this would have been defended just fine if we had someone to follow Venning. Lampkin should not have been out there. If you look at the above screenshot, if we had a guy follow Venning to where he screens JJ, our guy could have easily fouled the BC player on the handoff far away from the basket. Venning can’t screen two guys. Instead Lampkin is in La La land around the free throw line and Venning gets away with a ridiculous box out moving screen.

It’s also an illegal screen as he backed right into JJ, but Petar would have been a better option over Eddie.
Someone like DC would have run through the screen and the guy who set it would have been on the line.

This isn't a perfect diagram, but basically player 1 has the ball and x1 is the defender. An offensive player sets the screen, the ball handler goes past him and the x1 defender goes under the screen (towards the free throw line). When that happens, Player 1 then has enough space to take a shot at the point of the screen. Player x1 should go over the screener, outside the three point line and push his man out and keep him close enough to contest an open look.
Love the diagram, I was going to look for something on YouTube but this explains it perfectly, a picture is worth 1,000 words.

As a coach, this is as bad as it could possibly be. Like you can't watch this and tell me that he can coach. This is awful and this was coming out of a timeout. Like what are we doing? There are so many things going wrong. This his like HIGH SCHOOL level stuff. This is terrible.

The inbounder did a good job of the ole back to defender slide moving screen.

For whoever said Coach K couldn't get any better out of this group, the last defensive stand in regulation against BC is Exhibit A as to why this is not working. Coach K could have taken the best 5 from this Board and put up a better defense on that last possession. So unorganized and chaotic that screenshots made it's way throughout twitter etc. And it's February. Sadly, as much as I wish it was, this is not just a talent issue.
