Bell needs to step it up

I too was all in on Bell this season.

It is kind of tragic watching his difficulties. I figured even in the worst case scenario, Bell was going to continue to be a reliable three point shooter that had to be covered.

I can't decide whether to blame him or Red.

The decline is nearly unprecedented.
It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen. I’ve been extremely critical of Bell as a basketball player (some of the posts in this thread are lol worthy), but even I could see the trait he did have was 3pt shooting.

This is basically impossible this year. He needs a 6-9 shooting game badly. Hell, I need it.

Seems like it’s all in his head. He posted that photo the other day from the ball machine and it’s quite telling. He needs a confidence boost and nothing is dropping in games.
Of course it is. He isn't injured. Chris has always been a one dimensional player. Yes he made some slight improvements in other areas but his value is as a shooter. He's simply not making shots. It's not bad coaching, or this or that it's that he is missing. Period. He's in a massive slump and only Chris can work his way out of it. Hopefully he gets it together. It's like a good golfer that gets the yips. Some recover some tank. It's a long season maybe he figures it out.

What’s the most of your worries now?
In fairness, Bell has marginally improved his rebounding (4.5/40m now compared to 3.5/40m last year) and is getting to the free-throw line at a much higher clip (5.9fta/40m compared to 1.8fta/40m last year).

However, here's the reality. He hasn't improved at all. In fact, with the output of 3-pt. shooting going to basically zero, his offensive rating is at 102.3 compared to 113.5 last year. His defensive rating has decreased slightly to 110.3 (110.9 last year).

Just for comparison's purposes -- JJ Starling's ratings this year through a limited sample size -- 109.2 offensive rating, 112.4 defensive rating. Jaquan Carlos' offensive rating is 97.8, worst on the team along with Kyle Cuffe (93.4).

If anyone needs a reality check just ask yourself what Fran Brown would do with a player like Bell. Even if his shot was falling at 30-40% he would not be starting based on his checked out offcourt behavior and poor defense and lack of hustle.

It's a problem that should've been nipped as a Freshman by the staff and was never addressed so here we are 3 years later hoping for the best.

Not only does it set a terrible example for the Frosh, it's bad for Bell and in this NIL world it's going to cost him alot of money.

He also seems to have reached the point where he will only shoot when he's a got a ++ look. There have been a lot of instances recently where he has enough space to shoot, and just doesn't.

I get that you're struggling and want one to go down, but you're on the court for that one thing.

His confidence is completely shot.

It's fair when people argue that Red shouldn't have built the team around Bell. Or that his defense and rebounding would not improve. But nobody here predicted his shooting would be like this. It is an unbelievable vanishing act.
No way Red or the player can be HD accountable for his shooting slump. That happens, just inexplicable. I am sure he is trying hard to get back but with a ream that is flawed, Chris's shooting issue just makes things so much worse. One thing I think is happening is he is not getting many shots without someone glued to him. Could this be a result of pg play or offensive design or execution or simply no other player on the floor warrants his man sagging off and helping.

I mean, he isn't exactly running all over the court trying to get open.

The coaching staff can be held accountable for his lack of defense, hustle to get open, boxing out, fight, defense and his overall lack of caring.. hmm.. that sounds alot like what a coach has to get out of his players

Yes, these are some of the issues. He needs to play with guys who make him "better".

He can't make his own shot and we do not run any discernable offensive schemes to get him open with any consistency.

Plus the few shots he has been getting have all been clangers.

He seems to be a consistency and rhythm shooter when he's on and we offer neither on offense this year.

Judah and the playground ISO offense last year at least meant we had a scorer that many teams had to double at times, which meant Bell was often a release outlet regularly.

We do not have the scoring talent this year to do playground ball either.

A competent point guard (am I now appreciating Judah?) can set him up for easier shots that he had in the past.
Calling Bull. Stop blaming the point guard for somebody else’s inabilities. He’s had less contested shots than I’ve had in an empty gym that he has consistently missed.

I question whether Bell even worth debating anymore.
Checked out. Should move on/portal -hope he figures it all out.
Actually I disagree with checked out. He actually looks engaged on the bench which I would not have expected.

Did anyone hear Autry post came about his teams inability to run pin down screens and reliance on penetration? It was comical. Think about that…saying my team cannot run basic screen sets.

As a Red defender this is indefensible….

Bell doesn’t move to get open. Is it because (a) that’s who Bell is, (b) that’s Red’s design - his shooter stands on perimeter to draw out defender so someone can try to pound it in, or (c) all of the above?

Not only stands perimeter but stands in a particular place…the corner. The most limited spot on the court. But keep having the bigs set the high ball screen…

I think it's c. Bell lets himself get lost out there too often, but we do see Choppa and Taylor float to the corners a lot too.
