Given the too many team and schedules its never easy to tell

SMU clearly was the ACCs version of Indiana

They missed Clemson/SU/Miami/GT and played Lou/Duke
SU missed SMU/Clem/Lou/Duke but played Miami and GT
Miami missed SMU/Clem but played Lou/GT/SU and lost 2 of them
Clemson missed SMU/SU/Miami/Duke/GT lost to Lou

maybe Clem was the ACCs Indiana
They played one team that finished .500 in the league

SU played 4
SMU played 3
Miami played 5
Lou played 5
GT played 5

SMU/Clem played the easiest schedule and made it to the game.. Hmm

All true. And the byproduct of these expanded 16-18 team conferences, which are more sptly dubbed conglomerates.

Clemson was not that good this year. They used to be loaded with playmakers on offense. Ironic them and Alabama seem to be going down the same road. Both powerhouse programs that used to be flush with skill players. Ryan Williams is a freak for Bama, but outside him, Bama is mid at best on offense. Same with Clemson , but they’re in even worse shape. Dabo’s refusal to hit the portal and deal with NIL is going to lead to a potential Boeheim situation in a few years.

Clemson had some elite QB play with Watson and Lawrence. Their QB play has been mediocre to poor since then. DJU and Klubnik have not been of the same caliber as their predecessors despite their lofty rankings coming out of high school. Clemson has other issues for sure but that’s the biggest one to me.

Yeah, they were very QB dependent. I know every team needs good QB play to be good, but other teams have won NCs with QBs a step below Watson and Lawrence because they were so good elsewhere.

Well clearly we need a playoff within conferences now, at least 4 teams.
2 team championship game not enough.

SMU vs SU
Clemson vs Miami
but then Duke, lville, GT get left out

lol
but seriously

3 OC games. 8 conf games, then open ended 4 team playoff for the right to go to the title game.

Completely do-able.

Then you cross over the other teams. in week 12.

The worst team only plays 11 games or we work a last game in with Hawaii thats also open ended.

Many thought the portal would help the rich get richer. I said what you just said when the rule was made. The days of stockpiling ridiculous numbers of players who could start or even star elsewhere are over. Good players want to play period
Add in NIL and teams can transform themselves virtually overnight.
The McCord experience will reap more dividends in this new world than we can imagine. For starters, we are being mentioned with every drop back passer in the portal.
We have a great recruiter with a new pool of proven (or at least known) talent. It doesn't get any better than this.
Fran Brown literally talked his way into the Orange HC job. Imagine what he can do with these portal kids.
The important point here is that a few or even one key player can change everything for a team.
We know what Brown can do for us!
LGO!

How is a 105 player roster a move away from stockpiling players? More kids will just spend a couple years at OSU before moving on.

What’s a better add, a HS kid or a redshirt so that’s been through two years of OSU S&C? There’s room for both.

Liberal transfer rules are both a risk and opportunity to schools like SU, but the prior rules were a huge barrier to entry.

If Fran were to develop a player at the level of McNabb, Harrison, or Freeney, his job would be to keep him sold until he was ready to declare for the draft. In the alternative there is the opportunity to grab a set of players every year that have the potential to be back of the draft/udfa level players every transfer period that were top 300 hs guys that aren’t happy where they are now.

What SU needs to do is stay away from guys whose biggest single driver is the size of the bag.

The challenge is finding the McCords, who the factories screw up with. They're not losing the guys that are studs from the get go, so most of the guys we get from the portal will be cast offs from the factories that didn't reach their potential or were always a rung or two below what the factories keep. It's why Fran said he's going to be selective in the portal. He knows we're not stealing the first rounders from the teams we want to beat and is more confident in his ability to find them in high school and then keep them once they're here. Look at his portal haul from last year. We were elated over it, and it certainly was integral to our success this year, but where are those guys going to be drafted?

Agree

I’d use Meeks as the example to everyone, went from buried on the dc, core specials guy at UGA to a breakout ACC receiver who has now put a lot of high end plays on tape and has a shot to being a Sunday player.

give me 10 of those guys every cycle and SU is in the playoff conversation every year.

The key with this staff is they have the ability to see the athletic ability. But the main thing is do they fit Fran's culture.

Clemson and Alabama played numerous title games in a short span of years. Coming back to the pack for them is 2-3 losses/yr and even with that there are specific reasons why those 2 programs have slid back slightly. Looking at the top 25 it's still the same programs who are typically there. I still think the top teams who can afford $10M+ rosters are going to be the ones who typically make the playoffs. I do think we will start saying huge swings from year to year for some of the P4 programs.

I think it's still tough to call which way things will shake out. Also, what's the definition of leveling the playing field. I do admit this season has been a lot more fun seeing some of the top teams more vulnerable than ever. Even so, we still ended up with the same programs finishing in the same spot.

Yeah it seems like a few of the stalwarts took a step back and were just replaced by a couple sleeping giants. Alabama doesn't have Saban. That was going to happen eventually. Michigan lost Harbaugh. Clemson is "down" having two losses. It should be more surprising when Texas is not a factor than when they are. There's no reason for them to not always contend. It took longer than it should've. And with Oregon's money, they just needed to get the right coach to get them back on track. That can be the case with any school, see Michigan.

The portal will help some schools be good. With us having Fran, I think we can be included in that group. I don't think it closes the gap between schools like us and the factories.

Arguably, 105 just makes it worse. More players that can't get on the field. The "selector" schools become the incubator for everybody. They will get cherry picked like crazy. The money they will have to spend to retain players will get out of hand. If they guess wrong like OSU it can be embarrassing and cost coaches jobs.

Exactly.

Interesting question... I know what the records say, in that SMU is at the top, but there are variables, aside from W L records. All I can say is that it's been a pretty great year for SU. (Not so much for FSU...) SMU & Clemson will have something to say, later. I like Clemson.

Watching the ACC championship now, not sure who to root for. No personal stake for or against either team.

On the one hand, Clemson winning is probably best chance for two ACC teams in the playoff. On the other hand, SMU wins we only get one, but #17 Clemson is now 9-4 and might fall behind us in the rankings which could affect bowl selection.

Kind of a draw. I guess I'll root for SMU because I've no love for the ACC. :)

We're not going to move up in the rankings, the CFP committee already said that ranked teams with no more games cannot move up or down.

They were careful; referring to those teams they said "rearrange." I interpret that to mean the order of non-playing teams is set, but their absolute ranking isn't.

IOW, it looks like Clemson is going to win, so they'll likely want to move SMU down. Say them move them down from 8 to 14 and Clemson up to 11; Indiana (9) and Bama (11) didn't play so Bama can't move ahead of Indiana, but they both get bumped up by one to make room for SMU to drop.
