When you look at the ACC it is alarming to think that we have in our division three of the best coaching staffs and talented teams. Watching ball this weekend you can see that Bob P is a very good coach. LV looks to be in mid season form and i only expect them to get better each week. Having them home will help but this is going to be a very tough game and year in and year out they will be hard to beat. Clemson and Florida State both have solid staffs, and talent will never be a question. In short we are going to have a difficult time beating them at coaching and or talent.

Great point! FSU, Clemson and Lville make quality hires w/ HC, Coordinators and Position Coaches and SU goes the way of D3. Quite evident during the Nova game and hopefully things will improve for CMU.

It's all about funding; FSU, Clemson and Lville all have access to greater funding than does Syracuse. The Orange must develop creative ways to be competitive within the ACC which is populated by large state schools with better funding. Lville has an advantage in that many student-athletes who can get into Lville couldn't gain entrance into Syracuse; greater academic rigor. We need to be smarter and finding hidden gems for assistants that are very football good coaches on the rise. That is unless Bill Gates decides that he loves Orange.

Syracuse's biggest problem has always been retention of good coaches, IMHO, whether they were driven away by the need for a bigger name or bigger $$$, better facilities, etc. That, in turn, has hurt recruiting at critical times. Maybe HCSS can turn these guys into solid position coaches...and keep the gang together for awhile? That would be awesome, but it's probably wishful thinking.

The coaches that i question the most on our staff are Adams and Mac. Adams has never coached an OL at any level that i can find in his life. To trust the most important unit on O to somebody who has never coached the position before is hard to get behind. Im not saying that first time doesnt end up being a charm but on paper that one is a real head scratcher. Next up is McD. There is no doubt that he can recruit and im sure that in order to land him he had to be offered the OC position. Last year i thought he was really in over his head and the rumor was that lester was brought in to help him. Still he had a new QB and we went bowling and won. This year is the tell tale year. CMU and Maryland are the real test as we should beat both if he calls a good game. His play calling should be limited as the UCLA O which we are basically running is based on Four basic plays with variations off each based on the QB read of the D. So it isnt a set play but rather a read each play of the D. Like the old triple option. One thing that we need to do is to go Vertical. If we dont go Vertical and if we dont run between the tackles the outside will be taken away. Against CMU i want to see a solid dose of vertical ball both in the running and passing games as going side to side against better talent will never work

I'm still shocked people are grumbling about having bad coaches after a win. Crazy.

CMU has a seasoned defense with 3 true seniors, 3 RS Seniors, 1 RS Junior, 2 true Juniors and only 1 RS Soph. Their D is setup to read and react so execution will be most important. If we execute what is called we will be fine. If we don't, the play call won't matter much.

Seriously? We won when they missed a chip shot FG. They lost a lot more than we won.

Bad coaching is bad coaching regardless of if its a win or a loss. Not really sure what your point is? When you don't adjust to the other team and allow an inferior opponent to attempt a game winning 20 yard field goal, thats poor coaching. It is what it is regardless of the outcome of the game.

It's one game. Could be an outlier complicated by an underrated FCS power and losing your starting QB. Shafer/Marrone teams have historically gotten much better as the season goes on (for whatever reason).

And a W is a W. If we enter MetLife 3-0 and look impressive in the next two, game one is a distant memory. Coaches are only as good as their players. Was a sub-par opener on coaches or players or player (Hunt)?

But I think if I were to pin it on one thing - I think it's an outlier (talent is better, coaching roughly the same, and players will get better) when compared to 2013.

Point is:

We know that the players and coaches were disappointing last game.

We know that painting to whole staff or the whole season based on one game is foolish at best and asinine at worst.

this is true but 10 offensive points. they were only in the game because of the punt return TD.

true but we also had a 50 to 60 yard run for a score.

Making it all rather inconclusive.
