Binghamton Post Game Thread

I'm not really into the margin of victory being so critical, but we didn't make the rules. We just have to play by them. So mission accomplished.

Athleticism was fun to watch. I saw some things tonight that I forgot were even legal it's been so long since SU has been able to jump like that.

3 point shooting needs to improve. I'm hopeful Kingz will come on and be as good as I hoped.

Kiyan with a really nice debut once he got going.

Lot's of good things to build on! Players are figuring each other out, but they got the blueprint for how they need to play and improve on Defense. Watching 6'8 guys switching/hedging on guards was beautiful. Bigs/forwards contested everything around the rim. Kiyan's defense was way more engaged and active vice the exhibition games. Still, so many areas to improve on!

When you have a team with this much talent and potential, in game 1... I'm going to give the minutes to the group I need to gel together first... even if it's a blowout (Sorry Lobdell).

Are we...are we back? It seems like a lifetime ago when our "tune up game" were actually tune up games. The last few years we've had to sweat just about every team, including Binghamton. We came out and dominated from start to finish, like we're SYRACUSE. I hope this continues. The world is a better place when Syracuse basketball is good.

Last year we beat LeMoyne, Colgate, Youngstown, Cornell, Albany, Bucknell by 54 points combined.

Advantage this year.

You can only play the team that’s in front of you.

Is Binghamton comically bad? Yes they are.

We did what we should have against a horrific team.

That said, I think this is the most athletic team we’ve had in years and has a chance to make things interesting.
They had some good athletes. Not many

I absolutely love William Kyle. I want to see tons of designed alley-oops to him throughout the season, as well as getting Donnie isolated on the low block for back downs and baby hooks. Basketball is easier when you create high percentage looks and not everything relies on jumpers.

I was most impressed with Kyle’s ability to be a huge threat catching lobs at the rim.

Hopefully that’s the worst shooting game from deep all year.

Pleased with Kiyan’s offense, knowing the opponent physicality will be rising substantially against better teams.

Expect ~20/10 from Donnie this year (depending on minutes which should be 35.)

JJ injury update will be important.

I didnt get to watch and got on the gamecast only when it was 10-0 because I was trying to get the game on my free ESPN+ from Verizon (a no-go, thanks ACCNX).
What happened to JJ?

I went and sat first row so I could get close up view. Such a fun team to watch. They hit a lull offensively but the defensive effort was great and just taking pride in playing hard defense. NG is a true leader - he was asking constantly “who had who” and etc etc. WK is an absolute beast. That kid is so good for so many reasons.
Hopefully everyone is taking a chill pill bout being motivated for an exhibition. You saw a completely different team tonight. The one that played ina game that matters. Was fun to watch and the brand of basketball I expected

Lots of the guys that we expected to play great played great. And Kiyan is definitely a scorer that will play a lot.

Here’s some random thoughts.

-Fennell has a rocker step that is a travel. I expect him to get called for that a few times this year.

-in the age of NIL, how does a player like Lillley not wind up as some P4 back up making $500,000?

-Zephir plays very hard, makes good decisions, plays defense and rebounds. I think Red might reward him with one or two minutes per game just because.

-weak side help and shot blocking was much better, but interior defense will still be a problem.

-when it comes to defensive rebounding and then his style pushing the ball up court, Freeman reminds me a lot of DC.

-even though he was picked second team ACC, (and I like his game overall, despite his shortcomings), JJ is our most replaceable starter IMO. Kiyan can clearly play the two or Kingz can play the two with Betsey or White at the 3.

Here’s what I think (didn’t see this thread), we good ladies and gents we good:

Credit to Red. He said he was gonna bring back old school cuse bball and that’s what I saw tonight.

Fast breaks, athletic play, high flying scores in the paint, teamwork, defense…Let’s 3$@!in’ Go!!
For sure. we missed on a handful of crazy oops too. This is game 1 and the timing already is looking great. Imagine midseason form. Kyle, Sadiq, Suare, and freeman can get into the rafters.

The great thing about Kyle is he’s not an NBA center and can’t shoot. So he is going to be a four year guy. Only two guys in recent history, Warrick and Grant have looked that ferocious around the rim.

Lots of us were concerned about the exhibitions because for several years, we’ve been terrible in exhibitions and terrible vs cupcakes in the regular season too. Today’s effort was a pleasant surprise..

Was that real? Actually winning a tune up game by 40?

William Kyle’s shoulders were above the rim for that first oop.

Kiyan is as cool as the other side of the pillow.

Zephir is a nice little player. Plays hard.

Donnie is as good as hoped he’d be. Could be in line for a 20 & 10 type season.

Nait George is a floor General. Tyler Ennis like

Betsey has never seen a shot he didn’t like lol. Chris Bell if he played hard.

Watching guys dunk… run the floor… it was refreshing.

Thats all for my overreactions tonight.
