BJ Johnson

As for me, I will continue to challenge him but I have to admit that I can no longer take him one on one..

I remember that day with my son. It was a sad day indeed. It went from:

1) my utter domination of him
2) he could at least compete a little
3) he could keep up pretty well but i could beat him when i needed to
4) he could almost beat me
5) he could beat me but I could still beat him if I used all of my weight advantage and psychological warfare
5) I could only beat him when I cheated and held
6) He could beat me consistently no matter what I did
7) he felt sorry for me and would let me score once in awhile
8) he could hold me completely scoreless unless he let me have a basket
9) I will only play with him if we are just shooting around.
10) I will get to repeat the process with his children (hopefully!!)

Yeah I had that feeling of being overmatched as well. I said to another player/coach on my team and I quote "This Meffer is good!" I was wondering why they told me to guard BJ when we checked ball. I was set up.:rolling:

It's bittersweet when they pass you by - A realization that you're getting older but luckily there is the joy of knowing your flesh and blood has grown past you. In the end of course that's a good thing but it doesn't mean we have to like it lol

I've known it for some time now. I should have gotten to him before all this extensive working out, Sheesh. The one thing is that he listens to my instructions well about the game. I've noticed BJ implementing some or all of the things that we talk about concerning the game. Still in all, he is light years ahead of me this stage. That's a great thing. I kind of like the thing of being a fan of his with the emergency coaching glass if necessary.

Yup, that is a very good place to be. You may get to a brief stage when he doesn't think you are good enough to even do the emergency coaching. But fear not, he will come back lol.

I taught my son to play golf and now he is much better than me (he hits the ball at least two clubs longer than me and plays as a 5, i.e. high 70's). For awhile, he sought only after other counsel and we fought a bit but now he realizes I know his game best and I can still give him pointers. The caveat is, he has to ask :)

The young grasshopper still has to listen to the wise old man of wisdom. lol

Hey OG - is BJ planning to be in Italy this summer? I know the team is trying to put something together for a trip, but it is unclear how likely it is to actually happen. Does BJ have his passport (has SU told him to get one if not?)

I think this incoming class of recruits is loaded with "steals".

BJJ, Patterson, and Chino are all far better players than the respect they're shown. Even Roberson might be underrated as just a top 50 player. Though I do believe that it will take a few years and some chemistry before things materialize and the value of these players gets realized.

I like my labeling of this class as the "CJ Fair class" ... it's a class packed with great players gone unnoticed (and fits nicely with CJ about to be a senior leader).
I'd like to order a half-dozen of CJ Fair-like players every year, please.

Well I was guarding BJ on Tuesday Night while playing 4 on 4 games. (Also watching from the sidelines) Well he must have gotten pissed off and took offense to the old man scoring in the previous meeting last week. I was really impressed by the progress of BJ's improvement on his game from his skillset and physicality. He played strong and fast, knocked down open and contested jump shots both mid range and deep, able to catch and shoot with lift/quickness, he went off the bounce from both the right and left sides with confidence and played sound defense on the perimeter and in the post. During the contests, I tried putting him different situations from a defensive standpoint. He was able to take advantage of the situation (ME) with the decisive/aggressive and correct scoring attack. The workouts and constant gym time along with the strength/conditioning are clearly paying off. BJ actually workout for hours the day of his prom. He is definitely committed to getting better all the time. As for me, I will continue to challenge him but I have to admit that I can no longer take him one on one. From a talent/knowledge standpoint, BJ has moved to another level. He continues to workout with Todd Barnes (strength and conditioning coach) for 3 sessions a week until he hits the CUSE campus by July along with the weight room on the other days. BJ will also being working with ball handling instructor Irv McGill. He continues to workout on a daily basis in the gym.

Can't wait! Long time season ticket holder. Every year we designate one game in November/December as our "Star Is Born" game. This is the game where we designate (guess at?) which newcomer will have the greatest impact. We exempt the likely one and dones. Looking forward to BJ as this years "Born Star". I appreciate your posts and look forward to meeting you at the Dome this year.

Looking forward to meeting my CUSE family and the success of the team in the upcoming years at the Dome and on the road.

Cant wait till ya'all (yes, been in the South too long) come and play FSU!!! Plan on setting up a tailgate for that.

I see a lot of chat about BJ's play...was just wondering what he is planning on studying at school?

Again, thanks for all the info making our board family a part of your family!!

He is really good with computers and engineering stuff. He normally fixes all of the electronic/computer issues in the home. He has not decided yet.

He has got time...as long as he doesn't take as long as me...i am still trying to decide!!!

Although either/both are very good fields...

If he can play up top in the zone still put the ball on the floor some as a SG, and maybe learn a longstep pullup, I would be happy with 6'7 :)

BJ and I spoke to Billy O yesterday and he and BJ will start workouts this week either at LM or RC. BO stated that he would be happy to put BJ through workouts. He stated that CJ is supposed to workout this week as well. Should be good for both BJ and CJ. BJ will contact BO on Tuesday. BJ is finishing up his senior project this week as well.

He is quick and agile enough to play up top and the wing. Offensively, his game has improved especially with his explosion getting to and finishing shots. Like I said before, I was very impressed(hard to do) with his ability to score the ball the last time I played against him. He moved out of the HS level in terms of speed and strength.

He realizes that he has until the second year to decide but I think he will know more as the years draws closer. He always has been a great student in the classroom.
