Bo Ryan retires ... effective immediately

I can't be the only 1 who thinks this is how JB goes out. Just randomly and immediate sometime over the next 2.5 years.

For all I know, it happens after the UNC game this year.

I expect he will not want a year long Derek Jeter style goodbye tour, where schools give him rocking chairs, golf clubs, etc.

That is why I think he will retire before his stated planned retirement date and that is why I think it will happen during the off season. Retiring in the middle of the season is not fair to Hop or the players and JB cares about both too much to do that.

Note the use of two commas in my first sentence. That was a Christmas bone for OttoMets!

sutomcat, you're a grammar whiz.

Bo Ryan, you're a great coach and I wish you the best, though I didn't enjoy your antics or your win over Syracuse.

Don't leave us too soon, Jim Boeheim.

Work harder and learn the language, Syracuse athletics interns and employees.

Wisconsin staffers, excellent job.

Plus, you used the Oxford comma. I knew I liked you for a reason other than your love of tubas and connoiseurship of ginger ales around the world. You're a good man, Sir Tomcat.

Remember in 2001 when you said Syracuse was too talented for Miami to handle before losing 59-0?

Good times...
That is not what he said. What he said was actually worse. He said that at some point the game play by play guys would say that Syracuse has a talent gap over Miami. Now to be fair, the network left our game where I was watching so the game guys could have said that after they left when we were trailing 59-0

I agree with your first sentence totally. His post game whining and excuse making is what really turned me off about him. It wasn't just after the Duke game either - multiple games.
He never came across as gracious in defeat. I can think of many coaches who are irascible and generally unlikable yet somehow find a way to exhibit some class during disappointing moments.

People who are anti oxford comma probably misuse "literally," and don't know the meaning of "peruse."
Excellent job getting the punctuation marks inside the quotation marks.

Thanks suttree. In my reckless youth, I was not a proponent of the Oxford comma. Thought it was pompous and too English for my American ways.

I was wrong and glad I finally saw the light. Thanks Aristophanes of Byzantium, Henry II, .H. Collins, and Herbert Spencer.

The actual quote was that Syracuse had "way more talent" than Miami. Unfortunately, they also had way fewer points.

I don't think JB will quit abruptly mid-season. Bo did this, it appears, as sort of a "nuclear" option to get his guy Gard at least an audition for the remainder of the season - Alavarez would have hired someone else if Bo had quit during off-season - essentially what Calhoun did at ucon

They will take my Oxford comma from me when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Yep. JB has worked this through a diplomatic solution and carries more weight with university management than Bo apparently does. He got Hop named above board so he doesn't have to pull a stunt like this to get his guy a chance.

JB better not step down 10 games into a season. I'm good with him not making an advance announcement if that's the way he wants to handle it, but do it in a way that works to Hop's advantage.

I think the consensus on the pay side is that he will do it at the end of next season - hopefully with another Final Four on his resume - and not see out the 'Farewell Tour' that would accompany an official "last season".

He's "unofficially" at 972.

Maybe he retires after JB1K next season? ;)

Yes, by the end of next season, he should have passed 1000 wins. I think that's an important milestone.

Saw some RUMORS on this one. Nothing to do with health or their record. Possibly Bobby Petrino situation.

But again, just rumors.

I was always taught growing up that the Oxford comma was grammatically incorrect. I got into many arguments with teachers that its absence changes the sentence meaning. To no avail.

The Payside doesnt speak in "hopefully's"

Either with a final 4 or without 1.
