This is not a bash Adrian Autry post. It is not easy to be a head coach at the highest level, especially without having ever served as a head coach before.

That being said, what GMac has done so far and what Autry has done is trending in the direction of SU making the incorrect choice over a year ago.

You can argue a hundred different things, but there are ZERO reasons that Syracuse University men’s basketball should have two wins (yes, wins, give them a little credit) over LeMoyne & Colgate by a combined six points.

Zero reasons. None.

Did Boeheim say he wanted G-Mac?

Outgoing coaches should have zero say.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with getting their input. Not saying they should make the final decision, but coaches that have been in the business for 50 years know more than athletic directors do about what is needed.

You mean the guy who was getting smoked by colgate at the end of his career?

Perhaps you're right but he was a coach not an administrator and you could argue other than Pitino he really didn't have a lot of assistants become good HC's.

At the end of the day I'll support Autry 100% not much else you can do.

He was not as hungry on the recruiting trail and it impacted things. He made choices. Doesn't mean he didn't understand what was best for his program moving forward.

And I think it's well known that GMac was his choice.

He wanted to stay on as coach so clearly he didn’t understand what was best and hadn’t for awhile.

Why didn't Gerry get a better job than Siena?
Because he had never been a head coach at any level. It's usually the proper move for anyone moving up the coaching ranks. I also think he turned down a number of jobs because he didn't necessarily want to move too far from where he was.

**Cue 'why did Red Autry get the SU job then' question**

Gmac getting AWs NIL money even at a little amount probably dwarfs anyone else in the conference. It's a lot easier to be a peer ag Siena than it is at Syracuse.

Let’s see how Gerry does this year and next. If he kicks butt and Red struggles, I am sure Gerry would come back here in two minutes if the job was offered to him. In the meantime let’s hope Red is the guy and if not, do a national search and find the damn guy, whomever the hell that is

The optics alone would have been a PR nightmare for Syracuse University. “Why did you pass over the older, black, associate head coach for the younger, white, assistant coach”?

Should Scheyer not have gotten the Duke Job either?

It's perfectly fine to promote from within on coaches with no HC experience. But you have to give them help and they need to be on a short leash. I think he's gotten that added help by bringing in Englestad.

Short leash - we'll see. If 500 or sub-500 this year and no tourney (and similar next year), end of year 3 we should make a change.

We have a tendency to hold on to coaches for way too long in the big sports, so not sure it's in our DNA to make a year 3 tough firing...

When you built the program and understand what it takes, the AD should at least listen.
You don't know that he didn't. Just because he made a different choice doesn't mean he didn't listen. It means he disagreed. The thing is you don't want to be the guy that follows a legend. You want to be the guy that follows him. If Red doesn't figure things out, maybe that's GMac or maybe that's somebody with no connection to the program.
