Boeheim is smart… probably should have listened to him.

yes, he would accept the job in a second. But it probably won't be offered to him if Red flops in the next year or two.
If we have two losing seasons are we a destination for a big time coach. I would think not. The Dome is great but NIL and winning are what matters.

Siena was 4-28 last year. And play in the MAAC. They beat 3 D1 teams. Bryant was a 20-win team last year that we lost to two years ago. Let’s please put it all into perspective.
There are a number of people on this board that have zero respect for Gerry as a coach and they have said as much. Never believed in him and probably still don’t at this point.

Why didn't Gerry get a better job than Siena?

Siena is a pretty good job for a first time head coach.

Nice arena, good league. Lots of Metro NYC schools, lots of teams in his territory, where he is a legend.

Lots of success in their past. Launch pad for several good coaches - Paul Hewitt, Fran McCaffrey, Mike Deane, Louie Orr. A very good first job, IMO.

Gerry has started off well. Carey with a big game last night 16 pts and 6 blocks vs American.

Very excited for his start! But we should pump the brakes a bit. Two of his 3 wins were in overtime. They haven't played great defense in terms of opponents' shooting percentage in 2 out of 3 games. But they are rebounding well, and shooting pretty well.

Do people forget that Boeheim lost to these teams for the last 3 years ? And people are losing their minds over 2 close wins with Red and want him fired?! Newsflash SYRACUSE HASNT BEEN GREAT FOR A LONG TIME. You guys wanted better recruits and Red is about to have two top 30 recruits and just got an All American. And 2 years into a completely new team and everyone is insane, when the team is 2-0. And it’s so clear how many of you have never played a minute of meaningful basketball in your life with some of these takes about the team and what goes on

We didn’t move on from Boehiem to be bad

Thank you

Here’s a lightbulb - bring back the old bastard and let him Coach!

I kid I kid, though I bet he could mustard 18 or 19 wins

While you're right, last year they won by 4 AND had to erase a 24-pt deficit.

The hardest thing about watching sports in the Internet era is that every game is hyper analyzed and definitive conclusions drawn.

Red got a weird roster to 20 wins last year after starting out with some head scratchers so I choose to remain positive...for now.
Last year the guy who cooked us all game hurt his ankle and they did nothing down the stretch. No chance we win if he didn't get hurt.

reds 1st year roster was his choice, too

idk why people just give him a pass for choosing to keep the malcontents around...great job overcoming them...but its still a poor refelcton of his judgment to choose to keep them
And then doubled down on Bell and JJ....

I have zero confidence in Gerry's ability to be a head coach for a P5 program because he has not demonstrated success as a head coach at a high level. That's not disrespect or dislike, it's a fact.

The longer we gamble with unknowns the most likely result is the further and further we fade from relevance.

If we lose 3-4 games by 35-50 (which is highly possible), the calls for Red will likely start.

wow...just wow.

Yeah. I'm still in wait and see mode. I want to see how this season plays out and what it looks like next year with more highly rated talent on the roster. There's no reason he shouldn't be able to have the team making a little noise by year 3. I'm not down on him yet, but I'm not convinced he's gonna get it done either.

wow...just wow.

Am I mistaken, does Gerry have a few seasons under his belt as a HC somewhere? We've been spiraling. We don't have time to take a gamble on an in-house guy and hope he can do it. The clock is ticking and we are becoming less and less relevant and less and less desirable of a coaching job.

My problem is that we are ranked
#101 on KenPom (16th in ACC)
#86 on Evan Miya (13th in ACC)
#85 on Bart Torvik (13th in ACC and 2% chance to make March Madness

We were favoured by 36 points combined and won by 6, that simply can’t happen. As of right now we are one of the ACC bottom feeders which should never be said. For us to make March Madness we have to move up 50-70 spots on KenPom which is extremely unlikely.

This is not a bash Adrian Autry post. It is not easy to be a head coach at the highest level, especially without having ever served as a head coach before.

That being said, what GMac has done so far and what Autry has done is trending in the direction of SU making the incorrect choice over a year ago.

You can argue a hundred different things, but there are ZERO reasons that Syracuse University men’s basketball should have two wins (yes, wins, give them a little credit) over LeMoyne & Colgate by a combined six points.

Zero reasons. None.
Jim might have been correct in picking Gmac but Red was in line for the Job. Red had been the longest assistant and he was the assistant head coach. Can you imagine the blow back if Red had not been given the job. Forget the racism issue. How would JW have justified that decision? If the call was to keep it in the family which in my opinion was the right call as you don't dump 50 years, go outside and crap on Jim as he leaves. So, with that being the correct and really only call unless you want to get rid of every major NIL booster than the call was Red.

Certainly no insider but Autry's press conferences after games seem to lack in depth insight into what went on. I did not see the game but when you are outscored by 20 on fast break points AND you get 45 rebounds, there is a basic problem with strategy/execution that should be obvious to any HC. However, he seemed to overly focus on having 20+ shots/possessions...as if that's the key to playing winning basketball.

Could be I'm wrong, but I suspect not...

Shot volume is “a thing” but as you noted, the advantage was wholly eliminated by the opponent’s fast break points, the starting guards’ inability to defend a three-legged chair, and no plan or no plan that was competently executed to counter that.

Yeah he came in guns blazing with the “20 extra possessions a game” - we better get 45 rebounds against Colgate if our goal is basically increase of number shots they are taking per game. It was really alarming that he felt this was almost an excuse

Not sure we really have the personnel to get out in transition. Our best 2 offensive players been Lampkin and Davis - and they will be way more successful in the half court than they will in transition. And with how bad our defense is (at least right now), why would we want to increase the number of possessions we have to guard? If we want a shot against Texas we have to keep the game in the mid/high 60s.

We do not have the personnel to want the game in the 80s. Things could certainly change but right now in order to even score in the 80s, we are giving our opponents extra possessions against a really bad defense. And when you combine that with our inefficient offense ….. it won’t go well against solid teams
