It was always foolish to put the program in coaching limbo and announce a retirement date. Easy to recruit against and at this point no foundational players are going to sign up for an unknown midway through their careers. That leaves the Orange with a mismatched roster of one and done or graduate transfers which could be lightning in a bottle or the current disaster. It's only going to get worse.
I would not mind Boeheim staying and would actually prefer it while acknowledging that he needs to reshuffle the staff and bring in an offensive mind as the team has been not just below average but a disaster for years now. If everyone thinks Hopkins is the man then its time to announce he is out by the end of the year and let Hopkins become the recruiting closer he can't currently be despite the 2018 announcement. Syracuse needs to be building towards something not waiting out a death sentence.
