FYI- if you look at some old game tapes, SU played mostly M2M until that run in '96.
After that it seems JB fell in love w/ the zone, & by 2003 it was all we played.

I am 100% certain we played m2m in multiple games in 2003. Typically switched to it when we were down double digits in the 2nd half (like the triple court storming Pitt game).

i've said this to friends for a long time -- that i don't remember Syracuse as a zone team until 1996 -- but have absolutely no basis for it other than remembering at some point around then that the zone became a 'thing' that I noticed. Now I have that vague memory + an anonymous internet poster's statement! Sweet.

I believe this is correct. In 96' it was by neccesity b/c our guards were Sims and Cipolla, who weren't the quickest defenders and Boeheim got a lot of credit for the zone in that tournament. Since then, our than the beginning of the season or desperation, we've stopped playing man-2-man. It's been mostly very successful, but leaves us vulnerable to a hot-shooting team from the outside in a one-and-done tournament.
An interesting thought is- Imagine how successful the zone would be if the college game still didn't have a 3 point shot?

I'm not sure whose opinion regarding the ballbusting to side with. It was more of a lul than a lol for me, but i did laugh. Bottom line is, it's hard for many of us to be objective, myself included. Seems silly that your defense doesnt change, even with completely different players with different strengths and weaknesses.
