What we saw last night was more evidence of Jim Boeheim's greatest coaching talent: his ability to coach whatever players he has to work with, over the course of a season, into a unit that can compete with The Best teams in the ACC by the end of the season.

You can accuse him of not having superior recruiting skills, of not having the most charming personality when standing before reporters, etc., but his game-coaching has long been top notch & his ability to develop a team over the course of a season is outstanding. The season isn't over, but last night's game showed us that he has once again coached up a starting five that is capable [on their best nights] of beating the best five of 95% of the teams in the country. What we saw last night was so encouraging...

The most important thing I've seen in the past couple of games is the improvement in defense. The way Brown & Bell are emphasizing their defensive play is a huge part of the team's recent success. Judah is playing much better defense at the top of the zone & even Joe has shown marginal improvement. Jesse's defensive contributions are the biggest key, of course, and they are sensational. Overall, their defensive intensity has enabled them to throttle the 3pt marksmen of other teams and also cover the passing lanes much better than they were at the beginning of the season.

Team offense has also improved to where we have reason to expect that they'll be able to score on most teams they face. Individual players, like Bell, have improved their play on the court quite impressively. Whatever the coaching staff is saying to these players in practice, it appears to be producing significant results in both team & individual play.

No, we don't know the ultimate potential of this team this year, but we've already seen enough to confirm what we've seen consistently throughout the Boeheim Era: the man knows how to coach whatever players he has into a competitive unit by season's end. His critics seem to forget this every year, forever neglecting to factor into their early season expectations the improvement that they should know is going to happen.

Last year was an exception, in my opinion, because 1) he didn't have the kind of athletes he has this year, and 2) he wasn't able to forget that his sons were playing for him (and that he wanted to give them every opportunity to succeed, as individual players, period). From my POV, this was a "failing" that is 100% understandable & forgivable, given all that he has done for the Syracuse basketball program.

I will not be the least bit surprised to see this team win 4 of the next 5 & then play themselves into the NCAA tournament. I've seen it all before...

Biggest obstacle for Jimmy B has been the transfer rule and kids leaving. He isn't any less of a coach. But he doesn't have 3-4 years like he used to with these kids. It's win now or develop me now or I move on.

The team is improving.

Jim Boeheim is coaching well this season.

If the kids just make the simple plays we look so much better.. Other than Judah he isnt asking for top level play.

Make layups. cut down on dumb passes. Hold onto the ball, and please just move your feet when the ball goes up.

So basically...neoptism?

Cool. Glad we can all agree now.

I agree. I started feeling that way a couple of games ago. This team has some warts, but I like the squad.

Losing Jesse Edwards during that crucial end run was the killer last year. I agree that the team at the end of the season wasn’t the same at the beginning. The emergence of Cole and Jesse at the end made us a different team from the beginning,

I think we do all agree and have agreed that JB played his kids more than he should have.
A lot of different opinions on whether or not he should have done that, but he did it and personally I don’t hold it against him at all. It is what it is and I probably would of done the same thing.

Most teams get better as the season progresses. 2 of our last 3 wins were against bottom third conf. teams. Unfortunately, all of our poor, bad, and terrible losses this season still count - and JB coached all those games.

Given that, I think game coaching is one of JB remaining strengths, but I don't think this is one of his better seasons.

JB's coaching acumen has never been in question. His record speaks for itself. Its his tendency to act like a butt-hole that gets him in trouble. That tendency was much more tolerable when he was winning. Now it's just annoying

yeah that’s just not true. it couldn’t even be brought up as a reason

And this is what I find mind-boggling…He’s coached here for 47 years. Considering all that he’s done for the program - and, in turn, the fans - for the first 40, you would think if he wanted to devote four years to coaching his son, it wouldn’t be such a problem.

It wasn’t buddy that was the problem and, of course, you know that.

The issue was the playing time/starting positions of his two sons and sons known aau friends caused transfers and difficulty recruiting players. This is/was confirmed by trusted members of this board and various college basketball reporters. I’ll give you the last word as I’m sure you will have a rebuttal

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.

Yes there were transfers but given what we had last year on the roster, are people still arguing that Benny should have played more and Jimmy less? That seemed like a common nepotism gripe. Benny had a chance to start and play a lot this season in the first half. Maybe it was not nepotism to play Jimmy?

I will be honest. This kind of surprised me. But data doesn’t lie.

2021 - Won 4 of last 10 games.

2020 - Won 6 of last 10 games.

2019 - Won 5 of the last 10 games

2018 - Won 4 of the last 10 games

2017 - Won 5 of the last 10 games

2016 - Won 5 of the last 10 games

2015 - Won 5 of the last 10 games

2014 - Won 4 of the last 10 games

I stopped here because this is where the drop-off started. Now I will be honest. I did not count NCAA tournament games in this because we did not always make the tournament. I did include the ACC tournament because we played in the ACC tournament every year except one. Essentially ACC tournament is a guarantee and the NCAA is not, hence that is why i calculated the last 10 games that way. Based on a quick glance, the data would not have changed much by not including the ACC tournament.
