We've heard about all of the obvious negatives from last week, so let's talk about some of the brigher spots:

Loved, loved what I saw out of Kendall Moore. He is a really big target with a smooth glide and good hands. On that 1 series he was in, he hauled in 3 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown. Hope to see more of him this year ASAP.

Arciniega is a beast. I wish I was good at formatting film from the game because I'd like to show one of his tackles. He stopped the RB at the LOS and was attempting to power bomb him. Completely dominated that battle. He also had a sack. He should get some more run and flip Marquis back to the outside when that happens.

Kirkland showed his great closing speed. I really want him in more against passing teams. He is much better dropping into coverage than Lynch.

Quinta Funderburk finally appeared and looked damn good doing it. Both catches came from Hunt. He had 4 targets, including one in the endzone.

Brisly Estime is a gamer (4 catches for 51 yards). That kid shouldn't leave the field. Matchup nightmare and is a lesser mold of Tavon Austin. I really think it is critical that he is one of the focal points of the offense moving forward.

Ashton clearly led the team in targets (11) and did well (7 catches for 62 yards). I've read comments about him being given a chance at QB, but I've heard that isn't going to happen except for a few wildcat opportunities. I love him at WR right now. Another matchup nightmare.

Chris Clark is very underrated. He made some great catches and that kid can run a tight route. He has the ability to make guys miss too, which is big when we're throwing quick outs in the Pistol.

I think the Estime, Broyld, Clark and Funderburk should be on the field more. Together.

If the play-calling continues like this, there is absolutely zero sense behind playing GMII and McFarlane behind Gulley. They both showed a quick flash of what they're capable of. Sorry but running in between the tackles and even on sweeps with PTG isn't going to cut it. Give these 2 younger guys a chance. They've already used their redshirt, so play whoever gives you a better chance of advancing the ball.

I can't believe I'm talking about punting, but Riley Dixon is so, so much better than Fisher. He greatly diminishes any return opportunities and had two punts inside the 20. Ok, I'm done talking about punting.

John Raymon was getting some serious run at DT. If he learns to stay low, that kid has the potential to play at the next level.

We're holding opponents on 3rd downs. So far, they are only 11-34 (32%).

Ron Thompson registered his 1st sack. The more and more he gets used to that position, the better he will be.

Lastly, loved what I saw out of Terrell Hunt. Granted, it was against the 2nd and 3rd stringers and only 1 series, but he looked so calm and confident back there. Marched 77 yards, while going 2-4 (both to Quinta) and 30 yards rushing en route to his 15 yard TD scamper. That TD scamper he was carrying guys. Really opened my eyes. On top of that, when his reads weren't there, he was able to beat them with his feet. He is deceptively faster with his long, smooth strides. Throws a good, tight ball too. Really want to see him given more of a chance. I liked him in camp and wanted to see him given a shot especially given that he has 2 more years left. Continuity is a very, very underrated thing at the college level.

It's easy to look damn good when you're playing against the 3rd team D while they're nursing a 4 TD lead.

Thanks for posting this. So sick of seeing the other crap on here.

Completely agree with everything you said. Wish Smith would get majority of the carries and then throw some GMII in there when he needs a break. I'm assuming Jerome's pass catching ability is hindering him in Mcdonalds eyes. Really hope we win these next two games in convincing fashion so that we can get a little confidence back because I don't know how much longer I can read this board when its like this..

Really hope we can still get a good turnout for the Clemson game.

Clark looked good out there as you stated. I remember him having burst last year before he got dinged up. ( He's small) Everyone completely overlooked him.

Broyld is a man amongst boys in the open field.

Brisly is the guy we have been yearning for hopefully we can utilize him more.

Disappointed in the defense but I believe Shafer will correct that.

Not necessarily. It's 3rd string against 3rd string. Should be fairly even right? Defense may be a little vanilla, but I'm sure those kids on D who never see time are playing as hard as they can and still trying to sack QBs, stop RBs, and cover WRs.

I'm not going to say it means all of our backups should immediately start. But I don't get why people discount it so much when they're playing against the exact same string on the other side. Maybe it means in 3 years we'll be much better than Northwestern.

There is potential galore on this team and if the o-line/dline can keep improving we will a tough game for everyone left on our schedule. I just liked the looks of the game when receivers are running all over and we're throwing the ball and not only all over the place but quite a few of them look talented.

I did notice Broyld do an alligator arm move on one pass but he certainly does have a heck of a lot of potential and is fun to watch.

I've always liked Clark and even last year I didn't understand why he didn't get more PT.

Moore looks like a man child. If this young man can run a decent route and have good hands, wow.

Smith has to learn a way to improve those hands. I can't imagine the fear of him coming at you as a DB...ask Wilkes.

For all the trouble they are having running the ball, they have been very good in the redzone. Last year the did a great job running between the 20's and once they got in close had to come up with a special formation. This year they have been perfect in the close redzone, and can't run a lick otherwise.

The only bright spot: It's apple cider donut season at the CNY Regional Market.

It says we have depth. Which is critical for success.

Honest question: who was Allen playing against in his last drive?

The only thing I'll disagree with Rocco on has to do with Gulley. I think he's looked very good when given holes to run. Even without holes he's been able to break tackles. I still think he and Smith are the best running backs on the team and are an excellent duo. Production comes with a better passing game and/or better blocking by the big uglies.

Because it's not really that valid. See Chip's response above.

That's an awful response so what our third teamers are better than there third teamers. That doesn't mean much when the first teamers are playing when the game matters.

Look I am all for Hunt starting and that has nothing to do with what Hunt showed on his one drive because it doesn't matter if our third string players are better than there third string players. They have no impact on a real game. I want Hunt to play because I have seen Allen play 9 quarters of awful football. I wouldn't have cared it hunt played for that drive or not.

Not saying that PTG isn't a good back, I am saying that with the current play-calling, those 2 other guys are better suited. PTG should not be running up the gut, or even on a sweep. Just my opinion from what we've seen so far.

BTW, I love PTG's game.

I think you're moving the goalposts just a tad with this comment, but whatever. When you're a losing team, you look to the younger players. Nature of the beast. It seems like they looked pretty good. I only saw the highlights on OAA, I was probably back in downtown Chicago already by the time it was happening.

I'd like to see the tank formation used more in between the 20's to establish the run. I don't care what formation you use, but we need to establish the run, and the tank seems to be working.

Great post. As much as I love reading about how close we are to Western Michigan's O or where Drew Allen's stats rank, I do like having hope.

Good post, Rocco.

No team is as bad as it looks in its very worst half of play. Now we have to find a few bright spots in the OL play, the QB, and the secondary. There were some bright places elsewhere (Rocco's list). How open are the coaches to making changes over the balance of September?
