We've heard about all of the obvious negatives from last week, so let's talk about some of the brigher spots:
Loved, loved what I saw out of Kendall Moore. He is a really big target with a smooth glide and good hands. On that 1 series he was in, he hauled in 3 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown. Hope to see more of him this year ASAP.
Arciniega is a beast. I wish I was good at formatting film from the game because I'd like to show one of his tackles. He stopped the RB at the LOS and was attempting to power bomb him. Completely dominated that battle. He also had a sack. He should get some more run and flip Marquis back to the outside when that happens.
Kirkland showed his great closing speed. I really want him in more against passing teams. He is much better dropping into coverage than Lynch.
Quinta Funderburk finally appeared and looked damn good doing it. Both catches came from Hunt. He had 4 targets, including one in the endzone.
Brisly Estime is a gamer (4 catches for 51 yards). That kid shouldn't leave the field. Matchup nightmare and is a lesser mold of Tavon Austin. I really think it is critical that he is one of the focal points of the offense moving forward.
Ashton clearly led the team in targets (11) and did well (7 catches for 62 yards). I've read comments about him being given a chance at QB, but I've heard that isn't going to happen except for a few wildcat opportunities. I love him at WR right now. Another matchup nightmare.
Chris Clark is very underrated. He made some great catches and that kid can run a tight route. He has the ability to make guys miss too, which is big when we're throwing quick outs in the Pistol.
I think the Estime, Broyld, Clark and Funderburk should be on the field more. Together.
If the play-calling continues like this, there is absolutely zero sense behind playing GMII and McFarlane behind Gulley. They both showed a quick flash of what they're capable of. Sorry but running in between the tackles and even on sweeps with PTG isn't going to cut it. Give these 2 younger guys a chance. They've already used their redshirt, so play whoever gives you a better chance of advancing the ball.
I can't believe I'm talking about punting, but Riley Dixon is so, so much better than Fisher. He greatly diminishes any return opportunities and had two punts inside the 20. Ok, I'm done talking about punting.
John Raymon was getting some serious run at DT. If he learns to stay low, that kid has the potential to play at the next level.
We're holding opponents on 3rd downs. So far, they are only 11-34 (32%).
Ron Thompson registered his 1st sack. The more and more he gets used to that position, the better he will be.
Lastly, loved what I saw out of Terrell Hunt. Granted, it was against the 2nd and 3rd stringers and only 1 series, but he looked so calm and confident back there. Marched 77 yards, while going 2-4 (both to Quinta) and 30 yards rushing en route to his 15 yard TD scamper. That TD scamper he was carrying guys. Really opened my eyes. On top of that, when his reads weren't there, he was able to beat them with his feet. He is deceptively faster with his long, smooth strides. Throws a good, tight ball too. Really want to see him given more of a chance. I liked him in camp and wanted to see him given a shot especially given that he has 2 more years left. Continuity is a very, very underrated thing at the college level.
