Brown starting at Duke.

It’s not been a stellar effort tonight. 3 fouls in 5 minutes in the first half. He’s grabbed a couple of boards, has at least 1 assist. I think he’s only taken one shot - a three that missed badly.

He’s buried behind a stacked front court.
Take anybody off the bounce?

No he only passed, set screens, attempted to rebound from what I saw on offense but I stopped watching about 7 minutes into the 2nd half before he ever re-entered and took the shot that Jake referred to. I wish him the best too and also wished he had stayed, his skill set was valued here.

By the way Duke’s Knueppel kid and their center Maluach were impressive in this game. Cooper Flagg kid did okay but didn’t shoot well at all when I was watching.

I'm sure last season was tough on him. Guy played hard every game and played team ball. I doubt he enjoyed the crap that was going on and with SU basically bringing in a new roster one that included a 5 star PF he made an excellent choice. Close to home. Amazing academic experience and a fresh start . Hope he does well.

No doubt, I never would wish anything bad for him. I had wished he’d stayed but I think the addition of Petar was great and will end up helping us more especially in the long term.

With the upside Copeland has, there's little doubt that the stories/rumors we heard had some merit to them and every major program stayed away

Sadly, Copeland turned out to be what he did, because he was gung ho Syracuse when we recruited him and a vocal cheerleader for the school before he got here.

Maliq will transfer again next offseason.

Yep. Didn’t expect he would start being pushed further down the pecking order so soon. Still might just be lineup experimenting but a hunch says it isnt

The fact that what many here said was our best player can’t even see the floor for Duke speaks volumes about where our roster is at.

He was our best defensive player and still would be. He would not still be our best overall player if he came back. I’d bet the farm on that and I love Maliq. He is a high floor limited ceiling player like he was when he got here. He has the same issue as Rak did in that he just doesn’t have that killer instinct and he defers. If he ever learns to be more aggressive his game could really take off but that’s just not who he is. The perfect fit for him would be UVA if they still run Bennetts system.

Players on Duke referred to him as the likely best defensive player and yet he’s already been relegated before the season starts or at least so it seems. I wish nothing but the best for him. Also it was a representation of the roster last year but I don’t think that’s the case this year at all. This years roster has a lot more going for it.

Also the X’s and O’s On Maliq - in that short roll he has to be able to either drive his man( or back him down) to the rim, kick it or hit the open shot. He is a below the rim guy for the most part and while having good size he’s not a big post up guy and thus the first option he is limited and his handle is effective but nothing special. He’s not aggressive enough or confident enough in his jump shot to pop that open jumper consistently. That leaves the pass which is his top skill playing in that set. Without being a threat to do anything but pass, teams will not help and will play him accordingly as they did against the short roll as last year went along once Red started using it much more.

Seeing him so far at Duke he hasn’t gotten more aggressive with his shot or improved in being more aggressive. To me that shows that those limitations would still be evident and he is still a specialist( albeit a very good one at that). I hope he finds a system where that role for 30 minutes a game is exactly what a team needs.

Duke's big Frosh is going to be interesting to watch and see how he develops. I also think Flagg is going to play a lot of 4. going to be interesting minutes balance for Shyer.

Yep. The meltdown over losing “our best player” last season and the “this is on Red” campaign that people launched was so over the top. I had to stop arguing because it was futile.

Is Maliq a good player? Yep.
Is he a good defensive player? Yep, Especially when playing his natural position.
Was he limited offensively? Absolutely. If you watched last night the difference between him and the rest of Duke’s front court was sizeable.
Do I wish we had him here? Yes, but it’s not like his talent was irreplaceable. People were acting like we lost LeBron.

Maliq made a business decision. So did Red. There are going to be nights when people are going to say “this wouldn’t have happened if Maliq was here.” Or “see what Maliq did at Duke last night?”

We post here with a fraction of the information that the staff operates with when it comes to recruiting and personnel decisions.

I get that it’s a fan board and that’s what we do, but I tend to operate with a “support the staff until proven otherwise” starting point. There are many who think Red was the wrong hire and start taking victory laps at the first sign trouble.

Note that before people "start taking victory laps at the first sign of trouble" that Cooper Flagg also only played 22 mins in this EXHIBITION game that Brown played 17 mins in.

Not suggesting Brown wont be stuck on the bench or will be starting.

Just sayin...that if someone made this exact same post about how Jyare Davis is going to be stuck on our bench based on how poorly he played in our exhibition game, he/she would be deemed a hater.

I’ll just say I think it’s apples and oranges to the point. Most of the debate around Maliq has been about extremes. Such as he is going to crush it and have a great year at Duke vs he was just not that good.

What is showing so far is that he is who we know him as. He’s very good at specific things but where his game is weaker is still clearly looking the same and where he is a factor is looking the same too. To pay the kind of money Duke did for him we need more out of that roster spot. Maliq hasn’t shown he’s made a big jump and that’s not a surprise.

Duke is willing to spend big up and down their roster and probably as well to attempt to weaken a conference opponent to go with. It’s a no holds barred cut throat world now with the portal so anything goes and as long as a kid gets paid, then the long term development takes a backseat for the short term gain.

Jyare is a great depth piece. His numbers probably won’t be flashy just as Maliq’s won’t. Gauging where Maliq’s game is now his production and impact probably is the same as it was last year if not lower for us (given a deeper team) and with a better roster around him.

Maybe Maliq is holding things back he’s progressed on? I don’t see him as that kind of kid. Defends and hustles and does the little stuff and is an opportunist and a great piece for any team.

Anyways not trying to copycat Jake but I think it’s fair to say there is a bit of overhype on him making a huge splash elsewhere and equally being a devastating loss for us. Just as it’s equally wrong to claim we could care less he’s gone and that he was too limited and not that good.

What is showing so far is two exhibition games.

This is dumb. As it was dumb when you rightly called out people for reaction to OUR exhibition game with definitive statements.

Once the season gets going, we'll see what happens. Then once the season is over, some of us might have to say "HEY we were wrong, he's not as good as I thought" while others can pretend they didn't say something or just delete the post altogether.

Agreed. But I would point out, that last night wasn’t a typical “exhibition game.” It was Duke vs Arizona St coached by Bobby Hurley.

It’s like Red facing Washington tonight coached by Hop. I would think you’re heading into that game with a regular season mentality.

They did mass subs 4 mins into the game. They subbed Flagg out after 6 mins. The rotations looks very experimental to me, which doesn't suggest he will or will not be part of the starters or the standard rotation, just that I don't take much from this game. But who knows? I just dont believe Flagg will only play 20 mins a game in the reg season.

Not picking you, (okay, maybe I am). Did you watch the game? Or just looking at stats?

22 min vs 17 mins …seems equal ish unless to you actually watched the game.

Maliq played 4 minutes in the first half and had three fouls. Flagg played nearly the entire first half when the game was still in doubt.

Second half, it was a 30 point blowout 4 minutes into the second half. Flagg came out at the 16 minute make and didn’t return. Maliq entered at the same time Flagg left and played in with the game out of hand.

Posted the play by play stats. The rotations appear odd to me. Maybe you are right? Well see. Once we see what they do vs Kentucky in a couple weeks, we'll get an answer

I don’t disagree with anything here. I’ll just add that rotations aside his game looks the same when he’s out there. That could certainly shift but less so than opponents I personally look for the little things when watching these early games. The fact this is a better opponent( maybe not when you look at the score ) is worth a nugget.

I was just expecting to see a more aggressive Maliq out there that would line up with his game making strides and you can just see the same very solid defensive minded player out there who is also passive on offense but with lightning fast hands. I was a bit surprised tbh… again it’s early which we agree on. Dukes youngsters also all look really good too..
