Buddy’s letter to the fans

I wish HoWash, Goodine and Carey offered enough to justify them taking one additional minute from Buddy but none of them did.

And now they gone.
This is just silly. Goodine’s defense alone was worth giving Buddy 3 more minutes of rest. And that’s not even bringing up the fact all three were superior rebounders.

Goodine was far too passive on offense. Being a man down already for half the game, every game, because of big man foul trouble we couldn’t afford to be playing 3 on 5 on offense. Jim chose scoring over defense because he hardly had a choice

If he went to any other school in the ACC he would be the skinny white kid who lights us up from deep every year and everybody would complain that we don’t recruit enough shooters

This is quite true - I always want that dude coming off the bench for us! Always.

Fixed!

First, my fix is likely quite true. :)

Second, Buddy is one likable kid. Off the charts likable, and I'm glad he's here. Much like Mookie Jones before him, I love me some shooters!

Third, the kid is pretty limited. Insanely limited up to this point in his career and his minutes make no sense on any justifiable level.

Fourth, are we really not recruiting any shooting guards until he's gone? He's not very good for a SG at most things that don't involve three point shooting. Perhaps none at this point. :(

Fifth, he's far exceeded expectations and should be roundly applauded by all for the strides he's already made! :)

Sixth, those strides have allowed him to reach the point where you could probably easily justify him averaging 20 minutes per game, or maybe even more!

Seventh, I mean, if your starting shooting guard, at this point, still tends to recoil in terror from hard pressure or a double team, and dribble backwards (like the kid that got cut trying out for your JV team in HS), and then just tosses a bounce pass to the other team - you got a shooting guard that can't play 40 MPG.
  • Best example of this late in the season was the first UNC match-up
Eighth, if he gets much, much, much, much faster and athletic perhaps he can be a serviceable 35-40 MPG type guy.

Ninth, he's not going to get much faster or athletic. At least I doubt it happens.

Tenth, we have to hope Kadary and Griffin are stupendous, or we may be in some trouble for at least a couple more years. A super dynamic PG/SF can offset a lot of Buddy's limitations. JGIII and an Eli-Light, cannot.
Spot on

Could Hughes and OB on the court have taken one minute? Or two?

I think Goodine did as well, but that debate is fairly worthless now. We had some options.

Advance stats shows Goodine was equally as bad as Buddy on defense.

I mean, for the last 1/3 of the year they shot about the same from three...let Goodine just play the spot up shooter roll for a bit! And take the defense!

Goodine had multiple chances to show he deserved minutes. Outside of a game winning layup he did little

If his last name was not Boeheim.. he would have been recruited over and would be coming off the bench
LOL. They did recruit over him. Jalen Carey and Goodine were both rated in the top 100 and Buddy was somewhere around 250. The plan was never for Buddy to play 40 min and be our 2nd leading scorer. He was going to be a kid that could shoot at a great clip and come off the bench and play 15-20 min a game. The failures of all these other kids but Buddy in this position. Blaming Buddy doesn't make sense.

Those are useless. I know what I saw.
You saw Goodine play? Can you send me the clip. In all seriousness I really was disappointed in Goodine this year. I was thinking he could come in and contribute. In the minutes I saw him play against UVA in the first game of the year (only game I saw in person) it was painful to watch. He looked lost and I thought to my self oh my god we are in a lot of trouble. As the year progressed I would have liked for him to get like 5-10 min a game but I get why it didn't happen based on what he had showed.

I think he's blaming the other Boeheim. I'm not sure ANYONE would blame Buddy for this. Buddy has been an absolutely terrific addition to the team in every way imaginable.

The other Boeheim has a tiny blind spot for someone. I mean, in a press conference, how often has JB drastically overestimated how well someone is shooting? Cuz JB said at one point toward the end of the year that nobody was hitting threes, except Buddy who was shooting 37 or 38% his last 5 or so games....except he wasn't even shooting close to that over the stretch JB referenced.

I mean, I guess he likes to take it easy on kids in pressers.....

This was everyone's reaction to Buddy the first half of last year......then he had a good game and kept seeing more and more run and built off a good performance!

Buddy got hurt that one game, Goodine provided some very good minutes in extended relief.....and the next game we got, uhhhh, Howard Washington. So, there is that.

This should generate some discussion

Very nice letter by Buddy.

Some awful reactions by some alleged fans. Why can’t you control yourselves and act like decent people for just one thread? When Buddy makes ACC all conference teams, some of you will still be criticizing him and arguing he doesn’t deserve it.

How sad for you.

Fair enough - he's a 38% spot-up three point shooter.
So, feelings! :)

I think he's likely better than that as well if we're being honest, but he also has a pretty low-level of difficulty on his threes, as he's mostly just a spot-up guy.
Someone put up a stat to that he already has more 2 pt FG than Andy Rautins for his career. Much more than just a spot up 3 pt specialist.
Certainly not yet the defender or rebounder that Andy became, but he has 2 more years for that.

Syracuse people are, by nature, negative. The county even commissioned an economic study, which found the attitude of our citizens was one of the biggest obstacles to economic recovery for the area. It's the lack of sunshine, IMO.

Every player has deficiencies, this isn’t the NBA. Buddy has one sure fire elite skill; and unless you’re a terrific all around player like Eli, having that 1 elite skill is worth a lot of PT unless there’s someone behind you who is worthy of PT.

Buddy was the one guy last year that could score in bunches besides Eli. Yeah he wasn’t as good on D as Goodine or Howard, but our offense took a major step back without him in. And if Eli wasn’t on, forget it - we weren’t scoring

I know what I saw and the stats clearly back that up. But your eyes are better than the guys breaking down film. Laughable.
Feel free to comment as much as you like. I'm still waiting for the first actual bit of hoops knowledge you contribute here. Haven't seen anything but being a Boeheim cheerleader. Which is fine. You do you. I know that my opinion about Buddy's defense has been confirmed by multiple very smart posters here.

Yes the other ACC coaches will nominate Buddy as a favor to their friend JB ;) Same reason Few offered Buddy a "schollie" that he knew he was never going to accept. ;);)

I never said Buddy’s defense was good he is in the 23 percentile. Just stating that Goodine is equally bad. And for the record Goodine is 7 percentile on offense extremely bad.

Great. Good stuff. Really interesting.
