Buffalo Bills 2025 Thread

I’m just getting bad vibes about all of this. The player reactions, the Beane stuff, all the other coaching moves being already made.

Schedule next year is tough too.

I really do feel for McDermott.
Agree. If it was Super Bowl or bust, I'd rather have just missed the playoffs and start the coaching search. Although I'm in the camp that while McDermott isn't perfect, I blame Beane more for having the same roster holes year after year.

Ya I mean look as we have noted this could absolutely backfire and the team is an abject mess next year or later this year etc. I just don't know how you can run it back again though when were 9 years into this and still haven't made a SB much less won one. Obviously this hire is gonna be beyond critical, gotta hope Beane and Pegula get it right because that schedule is absurd as usual.

I heard this morning that only 3 coaches have ever won a first SB after the first 5 years of coaching a team. Sounds like once you hit the wall its a tough climb.

I guess it would be good to know how many coaches get 5 yrs to stay coaching a team though. Most are probably gone. so is 3 of 5 or 3 of 20?

Honestly, I think the floor for the Bills with a healthy Josh Allen is 10 wins and getting into the playoffs. Unfortunately, it seemed like with McDermott that the ceiling wasn't all that much higher than the floor. He got 8 seasons with one of the top talents to ever play the quarterback position and could not get the team over the hump to even make a Super Bowl, let alone win one. Only two AFC championship game appearances even.

I think he's a good coach. Even a very good coach. But it became clearer to me year after year that what was required to make the next step wasn't going to come to fruition with him. It was time to shake it up - although I would've blown it all up, including the front office. How many more chances does a guy get with a generational talent at QB before you say "alright, it's time to give someone else a go here?"

I realize the defense has been bad in virtually all the playoff losses, but there’s a world out there where the Bills could be ranked in the bottom third in the regular season with this personnel and they don’t win 11-13 regular season games. It’s why outside of WR they need to sure up the back end because the next staff likely is not going to be able to scheme as well going forward.

I do think he's a good HC and a good defensive mind. His achilles heel was his inability to defend third and long. Perplexing. Frustrating.

I couldn’t find the data but it must be out there. Was looking for third down defensive stats. That is easy, but splitting out by yardage I couldn’t find.

Seems to be the majority. Which correct me if I'm wrong, is very unusual in any fanbase when a change like this is made. Usually it's "Ya Go Team, that guy that's leaving was the problem".
What does that say about the survivor? Beane is like the babyface wrestler getting boo'd out of the arena.

Saw something weeks ago they were dreadful at home & decent on the road. Maybe we should be quiet on 3rd downs at the new stadium.

Guess they didn’t want to know. 🙄
I’ve worked in companies like this where there is a sane person near but not quite at the top who you are pulling for to have their vision seen through to reality but then there are dark moronic self serving voices that have the ear of the top person.

Unfortunately the dark moron usually wins because they are more apt to ball wash the top guy rather than tell them the cold hard truth.

Joe Milano, who seems quite plugged in to the inner workings of the bills, says he knows that Allen is not happy about this

Seems like we were better on 3rd and 2 than 3rd and 12
100% it really does. Crazy.

Beane has a ton of damage control to do. Kind of reminds me of the Sabres now. I always liked McDermott and thought he was a better coach than many people gave him credit for but certainly see the reason for change but also feel Beane should have been fired as well. That said, there are no guarantees and it certainly could backfire and Beane has come out of this looking really bad and will be under the microscope for sure. That said, it has gotten rather stale and each season does have a ground hog day type feel. The regular season all almost feel the same as well. Couple of good wins and a couple of really bad losses etc.

Nobody will ever convince me otherwise that Beane stuck the knife right in McDermott's back. He won the battle for sure. I wonder if McDermott will coach next year

always found it interesting that McDermott was invited to Josh's wedding but neither Beane nor Pegula's were there. Not a huge deal but always found that interesting.

I just see Daboll/ HC
Davis Webb / playcalling OC which is a promotion considering Payton will always call plays
Some crusty old Vet as DC

I posted in an Autry thread about how poorly run organizations rely on heroics from individuals instead of proven and reliable systems. The Bills certainly seem like the former and would probably a .500 team without Allen. I don't know enough about McDermott as a coach to make any strong opinions, but I also know that a team built around solid processes wouldn't be in cap hell AND need significant contributors at other skill positions.

If I was a hot head coaching candidate I dont think I’d look at the Buffalo job as the crown jewel that the pundits are claiming it is. I’d have a very suspicious eye on the workings around the McDermott firing and simultaneous beane promotion. Beanes presence alone would make me pick another spot. You aren’t going in expected to turn a 2 win franchise around. No. Anything less than a superbowl appearance is a failure. After all look at the QB you have? It’s an absolute SET-UP for failure.
