Buffalo

In the Rochester newspaper, college basketball = SU. A smattering of Bonaventure, then mostly DIII local schools. Niagara and Canisius even less. Buffalo almost zero. Nobody from Rochester on their roster where as there has been in years past. Now these 4 schools all play in different conferences, Bona in the highest (A10), then Niagara and Canisius MAAC over Buffalo (Mid-American). My feeling (even as a Bona grad) is that Bonaventure is over reaching a bit with the A10. I have always thought that Bona, Niagara and Canisius (who use to be called the Little Three) should be in a conference together with Buffalo. With some of the good teams from Ohio and going east could have made a good conference, probably better than MACC and draw better local support because of it.

The MAC is much better than the MAAC. If Buffalo moved conferences it'd be the the Big East or somewhere bigger. Not saying it'd happen but one can dream. Also SBU, Niagara and Canisius all don't have football.

"Much better" is not what I'd use to describe the MAC vs MAAC. The overall MAC is probably better, but the top of the MAAC teams are probably as good if not better than the top teams in the MAC.

I would say the MAC is better than the MAAC.

Buffalo is also a D1 football schools that restricts many desirable combinations for basketball.

It would not move to the Big East as it is not a football conference.

If it wants to move up slightly its either the AAC or Conference USA. Is it worth it? I think Marshall and Central Florida made the moves to the MAC and then on to those conferences.

1. Congrats to my "other school", UB, and its long-suffering fans and alumni;

2. Duff's sauce is far too vinegary;

3. Gabriel's Gate...yes. Elmo's is top notch also.

4. IMO, MAC basketball is much, much better than the MAAC.

Certainly not this year - # of top 100 Ken Pom Teams (A fairly unbiased measure)

2015 - MAC 5, MAAC 0

Although in the 2 prior years it was close in terms of elite schools.

2014 - MAAC 2, MAC 1
2013 - MAC 2, MAAC 1

But that doesn't really measure the depth of conferences.

In my recollection the last 15 years the MAC has been a bit above the MAAC,

Bona use to have football. In fact, they say they are undefeated since 1956 (the last year they had intercollegiate football)

Thank goodness no you did not lol

I wish that Buffalo was farther from the border. Going shopping on a weekend is an ordeal, having to deal with the riffraff from up north.

Oh, Canada, our neighbors to the west.

I'm sure the NCAA would love to match UB up with a UNC or Duke in the first or second round if they could cuz of the Hurley angle. The NCAA loves to do that sheet.

Main st. Buffalo would never be the same after a W against one of those teams.

It'd be mayhem at Molly's, er PJ's, er Third Base, er...

Where do the 21+ students go for an adult beverage these days?

Thankfully I'm part of a fraternity so I don't worry too much about it but now a days if you're sticking on south you're stuck with Surrender (Mojos) or the Steer.

Ah, The Steer (or The Stee-ah, as we called it) - forgot about that place. Surrender must be newer, and judging by its name, sounds like a place no self-respecting college kid should go.

Steer remodeled a year ago and the place is so much better. No more pool table but no walls to compete against and so much room to get to the bar. Mojo's or whatever its called now was basically paper id entry back in the day, no idea how it is now. The other three places that were mentioned before have all closed down due to murders. Kinda spooky. Third base and PJs, the owners killed themselves at their respective bars, Mollys closed down because someone was murdered by the co-owner. If you ever own a bar, best not to own it on main street. I think its haunted or jinxed.

Back in the day, The Steer was a typical college bar - now, it's a decent place to grab lunch/dinner.

Molly's actually closed a few years ago, then re-opened just over a year ago, and then closed again due to the death of a patron, and the actions of one of the owners (shocking that the officers who were involved were so lightly punished, relatively speaking, isn't it? / sarcasm).

The owner of PJ's actually killed himself outside of his house.

Mickey Rat's (not sure what future iterations were called) on the corner of Minnesota & Main - right next to Broadway Joe's - was another sketchy joint.

Broadway joes!!!!! Went their every Thursday for a whole year, 20 cent wings and 5 dollar pitchers on Thursdays. Was an absolute disaster and a total dive bar but couldn't beat the price and the wings were actually awesome.

Was actually at Mollys a week or 2 before that patron was killed. Knew it was a death trap waiting to happen. The stairs was right next to the crowded bar area, thought someone would fall down it drunk, instead the owner kicked someone down it. Not to mention all the cops working their were hammered. They were giving out free shots to all the cops probably poured out 40 shots and just put them in the corner for them to drink, they could barely walk or talk they were so faced. Said I wouldn't go back.

And always heard PJ's owner did it in the basement, didn't realize it was at his house. Third base guy though killed himself above the bar. Loved flip night at that place, good times.

Is the Stuffed Mushroom still in business? I think it was on Main just south/west of Amherst Street. Tuesday night darts league in the winter and the after softball location whatever night of the week that was.

Also the Audubon in Amherst. That was a little hole in the wall in a plaza near Sweet Home and N. French.

All Ive heard kids going to is average joes, steer, blue bull, surrender, slicks and some other place near the U and Honey's
