Build your best Syracuse team

I'll go with:

C- Bouie (2)
DC (5)
Owens (4)
G-Thompson (3)
G-Flynn (1)

Not much in the way of outside shooting, but Billy and DC could take their men outside if needed.

I guess I miss successful alley-oops and people who can dunk on a consistent basis.

You got 15 points have to pick at least 2 guard or frontcourt players.

Forward-1
5-Carmelo Anthony
4- Billy Owens
3- Hakim Warrick
2- Stephen Thompson
1- CJ Fair

Forward-2
5- John Wallace
4- Louis Orr
3- Stephen Thompson
2- Wendal Alexis
1- Michael Gbinije

Center
5- Derrick Coleman
4- Ronny Seikaly
3- Etan Thomas
2 Roosevelt Bouie
1- Arinze Onuaku

Guard-1
5- Dave Bing
4- Lawrence Moten
3- Rafael Addison
2- Dave Johnson
1- Dion Waters

Guard-2
5- Pearl Washington
4- Sherman Douglas
3- Gerry McNamara
2- Jason Hart
1- Jonny Flynn

If anyone blatant is missing I will amend. After this game this thread will bring some fun.

I’ve emotionally recovered from last night and apologize for my snarky post about this thread.

Alright I got
Sherm-4
Waiters-1
Coleman-5
Gbinije-1
Owens-4

I would like to tweek this exercise to expand it down the road. Include a bench and stuff. It’s fun and brings no negativity.

Same team I had. All 5 guys can handle the ball and pass. Enough outside shooting(Owens and Coleman being able to step out and hit threes a bit helps), a great PG to run the show and enough size and athleticism to rebound and defend pretty well. Offensively, I don’t see how you stop that team as every base is well covered.

Can we move DC back to forward where he played, versus center which he didn't?

DC played Center his junior year(and blocked 3.4 shots per game that season!) The year after Seikaly graduated and before LeRon Ellis was here.

I will add 2 flexes since I can find 10
More quality players.
The problem is nobody missed is worth 5 points I will just make them 3 at most.

I think the 5 point guys are all worthy of it. Sherm at 4 is the closest guy who could be 5.

This is tough. I think Sherm is a lock for me.

Sherm/Dion/Stevie/Billy O/Etan?

I thought AO would be a nice cheap guy at center, but he isn't a great rim protector, and i'm not getting that from either of the other forward spots, so I'm thinking Etan there.

Is Waiters at 1 too low?
I mean I tried to go by what they did at Syracuse.
Johnson and Addison get time bias but were better at Syracuse and Moten at 4 is the alltime scorer.

Waiters is the 5th best SG IMO.
Triche was the guy I debated Waiters with.

I think you have Hart too high. I would have included Rautins/Waiters/Triche/MCW all over him, but just my opinion. I also like Wes over Fair.

I think Autry was better than Hart too. Debatable, but senior Autry was very good. I guess it’s better offensive player vs. better defensive player. Teams had similar level of success.

Anybody who could be a 4 not included?

Cause we got a deep Flex bench. Guys like LaRon Ellis, Preston Shumpert, MCW, Kris Joseph, Scoop Jardine, Howard Triche, Brandon Triche, Josh Pace, Todd Bergan, Andy Rautins, Leo Rautins that would range from 1-3.

This becomes more of a game of identifying where you made mistakes assigning players numbers than picking the best team.

Quibbles:

Gbinjie played guard far more than forward here. He should be listed as a guard.
Addison played forward. He should be listed there.
Coleman, as other have noted, was a forward. He should be listed there. Danny Schayes, Fab Melo, Rak Christmas, Bill Smith...any of those guys could replace him.
Rudy Hackett should be listed as a forward. He was better than most of the players you have listed.
David Johnson was a forward here almost exclusively.
Leo Rautins should have been in the list of forwards.
Andy Rautins probably should be in the list of guards.
Moten played more at forward than guard. He should be listed there.

My team:

3-Stevie Thompson
4- Billy Owens
2 Roosevelt Bouie
2- Dave Johnson
4- Sherman Douglas

Please help me proper values and I will amend it would help. If Moten moves to we need another 4 point G as I would probably value him as a 3 in .

OK, this is fun. Here's my team. Although I think that Derrick Coleman and Billy Owens were the 2 best players to wear Orange that I ever saw, I'll take any of you on with this group of guys!

PG Sherman Douglas (4 pts)
SG Dion Waiters (1 pt)
C Etan Thomas (3 pts)
John Wallace (5 pts)
Wes Johnson (2 pts)

For my team, we have Sherman to run the point, and we've got Wes Johnson running the wing for alley-oop Monster Dunks! (tip o' the hat to Raoul Duke).

With Dion Waiters, you have an NBA talent who is outstanding getting to the rim and creating his own shot. Strong, good hands on defense, averaged a couple assists a game as the 6th man, and shot respectably from distance (36%).

Etan Thomas gives you our best shot blocker in SU history, and paired with Wes Johnson, who was great at weak side help and blocked a ton of shots in 2010 for a guy with his build, I think we would be excellent at defending the rim.

Thomas also gives us a post-up presence. He shot 60% from the floor his senior year and averaged 13.6 points on a very balanced team that had 5 guys score in double figures. He also happened to average 8.5 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game (!!!), which was about the best in the country.

Of course, John Wallace was probably the best offensive player in America in 1996. Holy crap, was he incredible!! He average 22.2 points per game, he shot 54% from the floor for his career (4 years averaging in double figures), and his senior year, he hit 42% of his threes!

Turning back to Wesley Johnson, in his one incredible year, we went 30-5, he averaged 16.5 points to be the leading scorer on a very balanced team like Thomas' 2000 team, which had 4 guys average in double figures. Wes shot 41.5% from three and 54% from the field overall. He averaged 8.5 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.8 blocks per game. He was the definition of an all-around player for us. The players called him "Kobe" in practice, and he was the reason that Paul Harris was pushed out of the program. And he was an incredibly nice guy, and was a great teammate who would share the ball.
