Can be from any current conference and does not need to include Syracuse. Go based off history, rivalries, tradition, financial draw, etc

For example:
Miami, Florida State, Florida, Georgia, Bama, Ole Miss, Clemson, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma

I'll do it along with primary rivalries (in no order)

Notre Dame-USC
Ohio State-Michigan
Oklahoma-Nebraska
Bama-LSU
FSU-Miami

I would also consider Penn State (only team located in the Northeast). Could sub them out for FSU. Of the 10 teams with the most Titles in the poll era, only Minnesota and Texas are left out from the above. I think Texas is overrated as a program. Maybe they can be swapped with FSU, which adds the state to my conference.

I suppose LSU would be next on my cut list after FSU. I think the other 8 are locks.

I think it is hard to put anyone else in.

Cuse
BC
Yukon
WVU
Rutgers
Nova
Penn State
Pitt
Duke
UNC

It's basically an alternate reality Big East that had admitted Penn State and expelled the basketball-only schools instead of the other way around. I guess Nova has to move up to FBS and Duke and UNC are because the ACC died instead of the Big East.

All games are in reasonable driving distance for everybody and all games have at least some level of rivalry.

In today's world, the only 10 team league that could be viable as Major from TV deals would require having ND, Texas, LSU, Bama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio ST, Michigan, Penn St, SC.

Syracuse
West Virginia
Pittsburgh
Penn St.
UConn
Louisville
Miami
Virginia Tech
Boston College
Notre Dame

Mine has the old Big East football conference as it's base. Then I added other teams I've loved to hate. UConn had to be there, so I could have one old Big East basketball rival that I truly hate and all the other options don't have football. We've also had good games in both sports against Louisville and Notre Dame.

Ohio State
Alabama
Georgia
LSU
Texas
Oregon
Miami
Notre Dame
Texas A&M
Michigan
Rutgers

I want to see Schiano go for the knees 9 times per season when the opposition is in victory formation

Notre Dame
Miami
Michigan
Ohio State
Texas
Oklahoma
Oregon
Alabama
Georgia
USC

Cuse Conference:
SU
Miami
Virginia Tech
BC
Pitt
Penn St
West Virginia
Florida St
Notre Dame
Michigan

Syracuse
Miami
UNLV
Tulane
Texas
San Diego State
Coastal Carolina
UCLA
Hawaii
UCF

Just for the road trips.

You had me until UCF. I'd probably replace them with Colorado.

And personally, since I already have San Diego in this scenario, I'd swap out UCLA for Cal and get the option of a trip to Napa/Sonoma every other year.

I don't think my liver would reach the age of 70 in this conference.

These are fair changes. I was thinking mountains but wasn't sure if that meant Colorado, Colorado State, Colorado School of Mines, or some school in Montana. UCF was for the kids.

Michigan
Ohio State
Alabama
Notre Dame
Texas
Oklahoma
Penn State
Nebraska
Georgia
USC

^ If you go all time winningest programs you get a good list minus Nebraska (currently)

I would think you would have to go something like this:
Ohio St
Michigan
Penn St
Alabama
Georgia
Texas
USC
ND
Oregon
LSU

For Syracuse:
Syracuse
WVU
Pitt
Louisville
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Duke
UNC
BC
Rutgers

Surprised people have Louisville. We have nothing in common with them, they aren't regional, and we haven't played well against them. Short history too. Plus they have New Big East stank on them.

If we are going with traditional and regional opponents I think Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, BC, Rutgers, Maryland should be locks. The last 3 is where it is harder.

Temple is next on the played list. Easy road trip. But they stink historically.

Navy is next up on played and not far behind is Army. They both make a lot of sense. Having Ws on the schedule is a good thing, but at the same time they are respectable unlike Temple.

Then we have Miami. IMO the appeal of playing them isn't the same as the Big East days. They are no longer the most hated team in America.

Tied for next is Louisville and VA Tech. I think VA Tech should make it. A little more regional than Louisville. There is enough to hate still. They have history with the other teams already in the conference, much more than Louisville.

Those are the only teams we have played 20 or more times. Outside of that there is UConn, more so for being regional and BBall. Plus BC needs a rival. There is also Notre Dame who is a pseudo Northeastern team.

Also we would need to consider common opponents for the other schools.

Pitt has played Notre Dame, Miami, Navy, Temple all 30+ times.

Penn State has played Temple, Ohio State, Michigan State, Navy, Iowa all 30+ times.

West Virginia has VA Tech and Temple.

BC has Army, Temple, Clemson, VA Tech, Miami.

Rutgers has Temple and Army.

Maryland has a bunch of ACC schools and VA Tech.

So the above IMO further makes the case for VA Tech as the 8th team.

Army, Navy, Temple also show up a lot. I could make the argument for Army and Navy to fill the conference out. But the conference would be stronger overall if it were Temple and Notre Dame. Plus Army and Navy won't be there for BBall, and it is better to avoid hybrids if possible.

So my final answer:

Cuse
Notre Dame
Penn State
VA Tech
Pitt
West Virgina
BC
Maryland
Rutgers
Temple

Which is 7 out of 8 from the OG Big East.

Regional (12-team):
  • North - Syracuse, Boston College, Rutgers, UConn, Ohio State, Michigan
  • South - Penn State, Maryland, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Virginia, Virginia Tech
National Private (12-team):
  • East - Syracuse, Notre Dame, Boston College, Duke, Miami (FL), Wake Forest
  • West: Stanford, USC, Tulane, SMU, Baylor, Vanderbilt
National Elite w/ Cuse (12-team)
  • Atlantic - Syracuse, Penn State, Clemson, Miami (FL) or Florida, UNC, Notre Dame
  • Continental - Texas, USC, Washington, Michigan, Georgia, Stanford

Remember the G-Rob/Kragthorpe years?

I do suppose Maryland and maybe even VA Tech rather be with the ACC schools. If this conference also counts for BBall, I think you have to add UConn to replace Maryland. Otherwise it is too weak. If it is just FB then no UConn as the top choice. Miami is pseudo Northeastern so if they wanted in, it would make sense. But they too might want the South. Then by default you take UConn if you need just one team. But if you need two and Miami is not available, take Army and Navy.
