Buss Patterson

Hard to really predict how freshman will play. More often than not our fan base is dissapointed with their performance. High School hype does not match freshman performance. Having spent an extra prep school year where Buss enjoyed a lot of success has to help but we thought the same with Cooney who got an additional year of red shirt only to disappoint last season. Having said that, really hope that Ennis will prove that theory wrong.

Cause he gonna take you to sschool.

All Aboard!!!

One thing you can see with Buss in those recent videos is how much of a force he could be defensively in the zone. You can see how long his arms are and how quick he is in those sliding drills.

It's not the pg position that I'm worried about. Where is the scoring going to come from? CJ and ____ ?

Gbinije has big shoes to fill. And Grant / Coleman need to make the sophomore jump.

I've believed for a long time that our season will only go as far as the sophomores can take us [including Cooney with the other three].

The PLAN would be scoring by committee. DC2 getting some down low, Grant for 10-12. MikeG and Cooney combining for around 18 from the SG spot. Ennis getting 10 or so with 10 assists.

DC2, Grant, and yes...Cooney- I still believe in Cooney, will provide scoring, IMO.
Cooney will take over Dirty's 3-pt shooting role, and don't forget the kid PG and the other youngsters..
Scoring will not be THAT big an issue, IMO.

Ennis and Roberson put up 50 plus points. Ennis did it twice recently.

The last 2-3 freshmen we had to put up that in highschool?? Gerry who averaged 17 ppg as a fresh??

MCW put up 44 but shot it much better in highschool and its alot easier to drive and get all the way to the rim at highschool level it took him awhile in college to find his floater in the lane. Dion probably had a 30 point game here or there, Flynn probably a 30. And those guys were two and done top 10 picks. I am not to worried about it.

I expect CJ to tack on atleast around 16

Typically JB's teams have a second and 3rd option that average around 13.5 and the other 12 at a minimum.
Question is who is it going to be. I wouldn't be suprised to see this team average 5 guys in double figures or 4 with the 5th just short of it.

Gotta think Ennis plays 32-34 minutes a game come conference time. Hope one of the guys can do a capable job at backup - we'll see.

Give me the OVER on 34 mins a game for Ennis in conference play. And lay big money on it.

I hope that Coleman takes a step forward in scoring. His freshman post moves reminded me quite a bit of Onuaku as a freshman. I am hopeful that he' going to be a much better finisher this year. I also think that whoever is playing 2 guard will be relied upon to score.

Ron Patterson brings a different dimension to Syracuse. More like a Cincinnati/Marquette type of guard. Pit bull. Needs to improve his O.

Paul Harris 2.0 (with a jumper?). Hope he fits better in our system than Paul did (and he should because he'll primarily be a 2-guard--his natural position).

Buss is a very good shooter. If he matches up with Paul on the glass, we're in for a treat.

I'm less concerned with his rebounding but he may be able to help a little out of the guard spot. I hope he's a playmaker and a passer (we know he's going to be a great defender with his wingspan if he can master the slides in the zone).

GMc averaged 13 ppg as a frosh, 17 ppg as a soph. Still very good numbers.

(based on my pick up action

All these guys look like NBA talents when you are playing them in real life (based on my pick up game experiences at UMICH).
You cannot extrapolate your personal experience to what his ability will be against major division 1 competition.
Scouting reports done by people's whose jobs it is to rate a player's game are far more valid than any opinion you or I may have about a guy based on our interpretations of talent and skill.

agreed. When i was at SU I played in a bunch of games with different players from the team and the best pick-up player, hands down, was Ryan Blackwell. That guy looked like an NBA all-star in those games. I also remember matching up a bunch with Ronneil Herron (walk-on on the NC team) and in pickup games he was so dominant that you would have sworn he was the starting point guard on the team, then I would go to practice and see him struggle to dribble the ball past halfcourt against the scholarship players.

Ronniel Herron was an incredible athlete. Had an offer to play pro baseball. He was our intramural QB and could throw the ball 60 yards with little effort. Great guy and a heck of a player. Watching him battle the scholarship players gave me immense respect for D1 talent.

Herron and Josh Pace were the fastest players on that team. Saw numerous sprint drills and they were blazers. I hooked Ronneil up on my friends A Classic basketball team in the city. When he showed up he was terrific. I'll never forget the Tailgate Ivan episode with JB over RH. Ivan spent a lot of time feeding RH in shooting drills. One day JB said to Ivan, why do you spend so much time with a walkon. Ivan replied you never know when you're going to need him in an emergency. Just such a situation cropped up when we were playing MSU at the Dome. Josh Pace got injured and JB walked up and down the bench area. I told everyone within earshot that he was going to send RH to the line. JB pointed to RH and into the game and to the line he went. The game was fairly close at the time. RH bent his knees and shot his first ever free throw in a meaningful game, the ball clanged a bit and went in. The next one went swish. Four years of hard practice as a walkon paid off and Tailgate Ivan was proven right.

great story.thanks for sharing

Keep in mind we aren't looking for a point guard. We are looking for a back-up point guard. A guy who can give us a decent five minutes a game at the position. We really just need Buss to be Brandon Triche, who was an undynamic but acceptable alternative at the point.

Coleman could not only give a an inside scorer but also a great rebounder and outlet passer. The fast break was gone from our offense last year and we struggled. I'm hoping to see it back this year.

Why do we take JOURNALISTS evaluations? Just write the story without giving an evaluation. That's not your area of expertise, bruh! Patterson is NOT a point guard and is at best a secondary ball-handler.

If you're making a direct reference to that line from Rothstein he says guard, not point guard
