Pena and Watson had baggage, as in here's my baggage of money making me walk out the door. Which is worse? A good player that does something wrong and gets suspended and can't play or a good player who walks out the door and can't play. End of the day...can't play is all that matters.

Need two OL -- check.

Need a starting caliber LB -- check.

Need a starting caliber DT to replace Watson -- check.

Need a WR to replace Pena -- soon to be check.

About the only offseason need we have that we didn't seem to fill was an experienced CB.

Otherwise, great work by Fran and the staff to upgrade the roster talent at several key positions of need.

Still think we might need another linebacker, if we have room. And obviously a corner. Maybe a kicker?

Not necessarily a player but the program did hire two secondary staffers (Kevin Coyle and Blaine Miller) to help coach a young unit.

To clarify, I like the young talent we have at CB. But I'm concerned [even with the impressive recruiting pedigrees of Samuel / Singleton] that we are exposed at CB due to general inexperience. Heck, even Kerr is just a true sophomore with barely half a season under his belt.

Safety -- we're good with Grant and Duce.

CB? Relying on a lot of youth to plug and play alongside Kerr.

Would have liked to see us add an experienced CB [this year's version of Clarence Lewis]. Maybe we still will.

And maybe the young guns -- along with guys like Delaine, Long, Andrews, McDaniel, etc. will get the job done.

Just pointing out that it is a risk.


EDIT -- Should mention that we have Martin [a S/CB who had an INT in the bowl game, and looked good in the spring game] who is experienced. And Buxton / Perry are also experienced. And Louisville transfer Washington got hurt and missed all last year, but he isn't a novice.

So maybe we have better depth / talent / positional versatility than what I was suggesting originally.

Disagree. The number one criteria in drafting for New England, according to Tom Brady, is character. It builds a winning culture based on teamwork.
 
If there’s one thing about Fran Brown that is *the thing* - it’s change through hard work and discipline. Adding players who may need more of that is a risk - but one he is uniquely suited to manage.

I think Ferguson definitely qualifies here. Goes to Bama as a 4star, leaves FSU with the lowest PFF grade for P4 guards after last year.

Last chance to try meet what was deemed his potential.
 
Distressed assets or not it's my understanding that Fran has picked up some of the top offensive lineman in the portal, is there anyone of note that we weren't able to get?

It’s a flyer. If he works out great. If not he’s not playing and gone anyways. I think he’s a depth piece and they hope he’s healthy. Doubt he cost much.
 
I've been out of the loop so this has been a pretty good thread to get up to speed. Seems like we're in a good spot but would grab a CB and a LB if we could. Obviously if there is another DL that shows up on our doorstep you never turn that down. Thanks to all!
 
I disagree with this post saying we are buying distressed assets. We have 100 players on our roster and there is one future player (Rice) who could be considered distressed. If we look at the general population of Syracuse students I bet that percentage is much higher.

As reported in another post there were over 20 Georgia football players who were disciplined for excessive speeding. I’m sure there were multiple marijuana violations as well

Yeah. Hernandez agrees.

Also all those high character guys made sure that franchise kept running like a well oiled machine after Tom left.
